Perfect Blend of Retro & Modern

Posted by Craig Cirelli on February 14, 2024

I got my Zf to run alongside my Z8, as a secondary / backup body and slightly smaller everyday carry. My original plan was to wait for the Z6III, but I decided to give the Zf a try since I found one that was available around the holidays. I was a little unsure if I'd like its retro ergonomics, after using modern Nikon bodies for so long. It's been many years since I had my F3 and FM2, but right away, the Zf just felt so familiar. Metal (brass!) dials to roll, how it sounds, the tactile feedback - it all adds up to a really cool experience. Definitely nostalgic, but then on the inside there's also the Expeed7 processor and all the amazing modern features that it drives. The way Nikon blended retro handling and modern tech together in the Zf is really quite amazing. As great as it looks, you kind of have to handle it / use it to fully appreciate what it is. Little details like adding the B&W switch truly adds to the fun factor for sure.On top of all that, the files the Zf produces are gorgeous. I always shoot RAW + JPG and those straight-out-of-camera JPG files are ideal for shoot & share situations. Colors just pop, low light performance is amazing. Just an easy, super fun camera to use.Other things to mention - I highly recommend the SmallRig grip / bracket, it makes the retro body much nicer to handle and having the arca-swiss plate is so handy. The AF system is amazing, subject acquisition is instant and tracking is nice and sticky. I'm learning to make friends with the flip-out screen, I still favor the Z8's 4-axis tilt but having both is nice. Not much else to add. The Zf is cool, it's fun, it's fast, it's packed with features - one of Nikon's best for sure.

    Cool retro camera

Posted by Kraig Wittler on February 9, 2024

I love the images coming out of this camera. I'm using it as much as my Z9. Pair it with the 40/2 (or 35/1.2 when it comes out), 85/1.2 and 135/1.8 and you have an amazing setup. I like the quick switch to B&W mode. It would be cool if it came in silver as well.

    Love the ZF

Posted by Joel Goodman on February 9, 2024

I recently traded up from my Z50 to the ZF with the 24-130f4 lens. Absolutely love the camera. It excels at low light focusing and the Incredible IBIS is greatly appreciated by this 74 year old. The smallrig grip helped a lot to resolve the ergonomic issue I had going from the Z50. My only complaint is that I find myself constantly hitting the function button and I wish that the AF/AE button wasn’t positioned so high. I did get used to this after a few weeks. It’s an absolutely beautiful camera with all the features I could ever need.

    Smooth like Butter

Posted by Thomas Dennis on February 7, 2024

Even opening the box I could tell this was high quality. Coming from the days of cellulose film and the high quality cameras of that era. Not too heavy, but enough heft to know you're not holding onto a plastic toy. The ease of use and intuitional progression from shot to review is smooth. First pictures came out wonderful and I'm looking forward to really taking this thing through its paces.
