    Z9 initial thoughts

Posted by Tim Brown on January 11, 2022

Good, solid build. Feels natural in the hands. Image quality is very good, seems to work flawlessly with previous F Mount lenses and the FTZ adapter. Image quality with Z Mount lens is very pleasing as well. Many features and ability to customize to my needs.

    Z9 place me on Cloud-9

Posted by Susruta Chatterjee on January 11, 2022

I absolutely love this camera. After having used the Z7 primarily for the last three years, the weight was very obvious. But I quickly got used to it and now my D4S and Z7 are taking a back seat while I exclusively use the Z9.The AF performance is stellar and the viewfinder is amazing. The extra buttons and particularly the programmable buttons allow me to personalize the experience even further.I will add a 2nd Z9 to my arsenal after non-NPS members also get a chance to experience the camera.

    Awesome new Flagship camera

Posted by Chuck Hunter on January 11, 2022

Amazing. So much more in this camera. I had been shooting with a Z7, but this is a huge step upwards. Fantastic autofocus and speed. No blackout at all when you take a picture. 20+ fps. And so much more. Very configurable. A smaller file size RAW option that it says is the same quality as the larger size. This takes the file size from 50+MB to just over 30MB which should make things in Photoshop and Lightroom move a little faster. I loved the 47MP sensor on the Z7 but the large file size slowed the workflow, I hope this helps. I have only had it in my hands for a couple of weeks and haven't found anything I don't like. I haven't yet shot in 8K video so I can't comment on that. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to get spot metering onto a button. You can put metering on a button and then change to spot, but I like to just point and push to get a reading in different parts of a dynamic light scene. I'll keep looking. Lots of configurable buttons, and I was happy they gave autofocus selection a dedicated button as I use that all the time also. So much to say, but I will go back to the first word - amazing.

    A wildlife photographer's dream camera.

Posted by David Gray on January 11, 2022

Phenomenal pro mirrorless flagship camera. The blackout-free EVF is ground-breaking for fast-moving subjects, and it is extremely sharp and configurable, such as 50%, 100% or 200% zoom at the touch of a function button. As a wildlife photographer, the silent operation means the behavior of my subjects is not changed by the intrusion of the sound of a mechanical shutter. Low-light, high ISO noise levels are incredibly low for a 45Mpixel camera.

When It comes together, It works

Posted by EARL GIBSON III on January 11, 2022

As a seasoned professional, It is refreshing to see that Nikon has heard our cries and worked to make a dynamic mirrorless camera. I have been a Nikon shooter for over 40+ years and I look forward to utilizing this tool to its fullest...Bravo Nikon!!

    Familiar DNA

Posted by John R Green on January 11, 2022

Nice to be back with a solid great camera with a familiar DNA of past top of the line cameras. The Z9 does more than my work demands, but the innovations are greatly appreciated.

    Worth sticking with NIKON

Posted by brian jablonski on January 11, 2022

wow....coming from a Z6ii ...was considering Canon and Sony for better autofocus for BIF and Sports...so glad I waited! this camera is awesome...sticky auto focus tracking, great ergonomics, well built, priced below what I was expecting ( Nikon, don't read "price increase" into this :)). not a pro but avid enthusiast....so pleased I pulled the trigger on this and the awesome 100-400 Z lens. great camera body for just about every type of shooting

Wedding & Event Photography Game Changer!

Posted by Mark McConnell on January 11, 2022

Upgrading from using D850 and D810's, I've been waiting before making the mirrorless change. When the first Z7 came out, it lacked a 2nd card slot which was a deal breaker when shooting weddings. Then the Z7ii came out and I almost went for it, but thought why not wait for a Z8 which would be that perfect event camera like the D850 is. But once I saw everything the Z9 was capable of doing and the most reasonable price for this level camera, it was time to stop waiting. Some huge game changing features for an event photographer coming from the D850 or lower.1. Low light focus is amazing! I think it lists ability to focus in -8 ev, and I can't really tell you if that is accurate to the number, but I can tell you that it will focus in just about pitch black conditions. The focus assist is so much better than what I've had to use with other cameras, which is basically the add on top of camera Flash focus assist which is hit or miss depending on where you have your focus point. It was too easy to miss a quick moment when the camera was focusing in and out trying to lock. The Z9 is super quick to lock on with very little contrast in your subject. 2- Eye detection. I've always used AF-S and single dot focus to move the focus point to my subjects eye and it always amazed me when shooting with some of my 2nd shooters that this wasn't something many are very good at. I guess I'll attribute my quick curser movement to gaming ;) But the Z9 takes all the guess work and lag time out of it. You can select the size of the field you want it to look for your subject and it will find the eyes within that field faster than I could ever do it.3-Size of focus field. Coming from dslr's where the area you could select to focus on a subject was pretty limited, now you have just about edge to edge focus points allowing you much better composition ability without having to focus lock and recompose.4-Portrait screen tilt. I usually do a few shots from a low vantage point which meant getting down and level to the camera to see your composition, now with the portrait screen tilt, I don't have to virtually lay on the ground anymore. There of course are a lot of nice to haves and I'm sure game changers for different styles of photography.I've not really gotten into the whole video thing mostly because Nikon cameras have never really been great at it, and I didn't want to invest into a whole new suite of glass for other brands, but now with the Z9, I might just have to get started. Here are a few downsides/suggestions--The weight of this thing will probably be a problem for some. It's heavier than the D850, plus you add more weight with the lens adapter until you switch your glass.-They removed the usual quick access button for meter matrix which doesn't make sense to me. When out in the field, I often switch what type of meter matrix I'm outdoors. Full meter for landscape and using a strobe on subject, and spot metering when I shoot without flash for natural light pics. Now having to fumble through menus is a little cumbersome, but I fixed it by customizing a function button for quicker access. To each their own, but there are so many more upsides to this amazing camera. -
