This camera is a workhorse - I use 3 of them

Posted by Gary Heller on November 22, 2025

I haven't encountered a photo subject yet that couldn't be successfully dialed in to the camera. As a studio camera on a tripod, I'm able to tackle tricky subjects and lighting situations with the right combination of settings (exposure and focus), lenses, and light. The menu can be long and daunting, but once you understand the logic upon which it's based, everything becomes clearer. I save the settings which eliminates the need to hunt for what I need. As a field camera, it's light enough (although not the lightest against the competition) to carry all day. Dynamic range at low ISOs and high mega-pixel count give results that are very usable without substantial time in post. HDR and focus stacking features are really valuable here. I use the HDR in-camera feature sparingly because it only produces a JPG at the end of the process. I've used the highest ISO setting and noise is an issue that's not unique to Nikon. That's one area that I'd like to see improvement from the industry as a whole. Overall, the lens to camera balance with many Nikkor Z lenses is almost perfect; much better than when using current 3rd party glass. Kudos to the latest version of the 24-70mm that keeps its balance internally. Weather sealing is excellent for both the camera and lenses. I've shot it cold and wet conditions that the camera handles better than I do personally. For event and portrait work, the camera is again very adaptable. As a still photographer on movie shoots, I able to get all the video takes and BTS candids without being noticed. The silent shutter feature is truly silent. Only a very, very brief blip in the viewfinder indicates that the image was taken. The only challenge I've encountered again is in low light action scenes where noise can become an issue. There are several excellent noise reduction processes/software out there that mostly solve the problem. Teamed with the 85mm f/1.8 or the 135mm f/1.8 Plena, and you've got a powerful combination for people pictures. The crispness of images using the 85mm, and the subject isolation and bokeh of the Plena, are absolutely stunning. For event photography, I'm not concerned with start-up time because the camera is ready faster than I can lift it to my eye. I really like the feature that places a blind between the lens mount and sensor which prevents dust, dirt, and fingers from accidentally going where they're not supposed to. As a result, sensor maintenance is almost entirely eliminated. Just remember to turn the camera off first when changing lenses.Another feature on my wish list is to have a fully articulating LCD. While the added movements to the Z8's screen is helpful, I really like the fully articulating screen that's been on the Zf and most Coolpix cameras over the past decades. Can't be that big a deal I would think. Finally, while I appreciate the fact that Nikon makes continuous improvements and fixes to the camera's firmware, the major changes that sometimes occur means that I'm back on the learning curve. On the plus side, these major updates deliver so many new and needed features that it's worth the short term pain for the long term gain.

    Great step up from Z7II

Posted by Pierre Chavanne on November 20, 2025

Have owned a series of Nikon cameras, and just upgraded from a Z7II. Debated for a long time, was not sure I was willing to carry a larger and heavier body, but as I got more into bird photography the Z8's autofocus just became too tempting. Don't regret it one bit, the Z8 is everything the Z7 was plus a huge improvement in autofocus and speed. Haven't explored all the features yet but not looking back.

Go Ahead and Make the Jump to Mirrorless!

Posted by Deon Little on November 11, 2025

Loving my new Z 8! I upgraded from the D800, which I loved and that I produced some amazing images with. I was hesitant to make the leap as I was already happy with what I had, but then I on a whelm, I made the jump. I highly recommend upgrading to mirrorless for anyone that's thinking about making the jump. Just can't beat the quality of these new Z-mount lens especially the S lineup. Oh my I'm in heaven! Only thing that I have a slight disappointment with is the battery life. However, I've mitigated that by picking up an extra battery. I'm so very satisfied with my purchase.

    Game changer

Posted by Michelle Homan on November 9, 2025

This is a game changer. I have gone from a D80 to a Z7 and now have the Z8. There is a bit of a learning curve to understand the various settings and tools available. However, the functionality and the ability to customize is outstanding. It is quick, rather light and perfect for how I use a camera. The only complaint so far is the battery life. I'll be adding a battery grip.

    D500 to Z8

Posted by Troy Carpenter on October 28, 2025

I love my D500 and waited for Nikon to release a proper replacement for it. In my opinion, the Z50 II falls short (as a primary or only) due to lacking a backup card slot. Once in a life time trips can’t be risked to card failure. I read hundreds of opinions, all the forums and reviews. Price point of the Z8 was higher than I wanted to go but I wanted to take advantage of the subject detection and silent shooting of mirrorless. So I decided to save and wait. When I found a refurb Z8 with the deal I wanted I grabbed it. I have to say, it was a big buy for me but I’m very happy with it. It gives me my D500 (DX mode) and all the plusses of full frame. Plus it has the backup card slot. In my opinion, it was the right move for me. Lots of pros out there to help guide you through setting up if you need it (I did). In just a month I feel like I’ve already made a smooth transition. I’m not a professional photographer, but I do believe the technology helps even the intermediate photographer become less frustrated therefore better. My 2 cents
