My experience with the Nikon Z8

Posted by Ray Lack on February 3, 2025

I have been a Nikon user for over 50 years and I love them. That being said, I purchased a Z9 when it first came out and I wasn’t disappointed. The only issue I had with it was the weight, I’m not “young” anymore and it just became too much for me for extended shoots. I reluctantly sold it and purchased a Z8 and found it to be the perfect solution. I love the Nikon Z8 and I don’t feel like I sacrificed anything by going doing so, it is perfect! I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a professional camera without the extra weight. Thank you Nikon, the Z8 is perfect!

    Amazingly Fast Autofocus

Posted by Geoff C. on January 30, 2025

Amazed with how quickly it can autofocus. Tremendous amount of functionality that I’m anxious to learn more about how to best use. I enjoy taking wildlife pictures and the Pre-release Capture feature is a wonderful feature. I use the Z 8 frequently with the Nikkor 180-600 lens. Because of the weight of the lens I do find it somewhat difficult to use the buttons and controls on the left side of the camera when using this lens handheld.

    Fabulous!

Posted by Jilly on January 30, 2025

I’m a bit of a photography gear junky. I have the z6ii and the z9 in addition to the z8. I want to upgrade the z6ii to the z6iii, because the z6ii has been one of my favorite cameras. But I’m here to talk about the z8, which I also enjoy quite a lot. I have muscular dystrophy, which affects my muscle strength. As much as I loved the z9, it was simply too heavy for me; I couldn’t hold it steady. The z6ii is lightweight and performs quite well. But my partner wanted to get more comfortable around the camera, so he claimed the z6ii, and I bought the z8. I was skeptical that its weight would be significantly lighter than the z9, so I went to Bergen County Camera and played with it, shot a few photos. It seemed a weight I could handle. I bought it a couple days before my partner and I were flying to Morocco. And I fell in love with it because while it’s heavier than the z6ii, it’s still manageable for me to carry with a chest harness and hold stable while shooting, and it’s essentially the z9, just lighter in weight. I love it. I now use the z9 for tripod use as only, so lots if portraiture.

The Z8 is fabulous — Just buy it!

Posted by Nancy L. on January 24, 2025

Fabulous images. The camera is complicated but for those wishing to study how it works, you will be amply rewarded with all the options for obtaining stellar images. Very happy to have purchased this camera! Paired it with the 100-400 with 1.4 TC and could not be happier photographing wildlife.

    Professional Mirrorless

Posted by John C. on January 21, 2025

Coming from a D850 much is familiar i.e. handling. Still some time is required to set up the menus to an individual's tastes. Once set up the images are typical quality Nikon. I have particularly enjoyed using matrix metering with face detection in difficult lighting situations. The EVF is excellent and bright. I am using the Z 24-70 f2.8 lens at present and will add more Z lenses as they are excellent. I do not do video. This camera should meet most individuals needs at any skill level as it is highly customizable and rugged.
