Great Camera for Landscape and Travel Photography

Posted by Mark/Nancy Stigliano on April 11, 2023

I've had my Z 6II for a couple of months now. I've had SLR's since the early 70's; range finders and Brownie type cameras since the 50's. I had a D610 for 10 years and decided it was time to upgrade. I was a bit hesitant to go mirrorless but I'm happy I did. I just came back from taking two cruises back to back out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I took about 500 shots. I purchased my Z with the 24-200 lens. I like the lighter weight of the camera and the "walk around" lens. The brightness of the viewfinder is a real plus. I was worried about battery life but that has not even come close to being a problem. Low light focus is much better than my D610. High ISO shots show very little noise. Menu options are similar to the D610 so the learning curve was practically non existent. All in all for landscape and travel photography this was a great choice. I highly recommend it.

Great focus and excellent in low light.

Excellent in low light, fast and easy to operate. Owners manual leaves a lot to be desired.

    Amateur may turn pro!

The only other camera I’ve owned was a Nikon D3100. Z6ii is very impressive! The H+ shooting is excellent. I recently took it to my niece’s soccer game and inadvertently made money off action shots of kids playing. Thanks Nikon!

A Nice Camera for My Purposes

Posted by Anthony Duminski on March 21, 2023

I purchased my Z6ii with a 24-120 f4 S Line Zoom lens in late November 2022. This was to replace my old D7100. I found that the height of the Z6ii did not provide me with a satisfying grip surface for such a lens heavy configuration so I added an MB-N11 Grip. That now provides a much better balance and grip surface. Perhaps I should have bought the Z9 to begin with but I did not want to spend that much money. In addition to the grip I now had to purchase a larger bag to hold the larger camera profile and my various F mount lenses plus FTZ II adapter. I have at least a half-dozen F Mount Nikon lenses including f2.8 zooms and fast primes. I decided to get a Billingham 335 and that bag seems like a good storage and transport solution for some of my gear. When I first used the Z6ii I simply set it to Auto Mode and took a few shots in my office. For some shots the exposure and color balance were not to my liking but a slight tweak in an image editor fixed that problem. Overall the camera seems to take sharp, clear, and high contrast photos. I am learning the new control layout versus my old D7100. I think this camera will satisfy my needs just fine once I become more familiar with it. I am glad that I purchased it. This is my first ILC mirrorless camera and it has a good electronic viewfinder. I am an experienced amateur and have been taking photos for about 65 years. These days I usually shoot photos in program, shutter, or aperture priority mode depending on my photographic intent. I shoot both in studio and outdoor environments. My prior subjects have ranged from portraiture and fashion to hydroplane and grand prix racing.

    So Satisfying

Posted by Tyler Savick on March 20, 2023

I have had a beginner DSLR for a number of years now. And I always have the latest and greatest iPhones (14 pro at time of writing). The z6ii blows them both out of the water. I paired it with the 85mm f/1.8 and the “kit” 24-70mm zoom lens. This is not your typical “kit” lens my friends. These z mount s line lenses are just amazing! Still learning all the features of the camera body. Lots of customizing can be done for your shooting preferences. I have absolutely no complaints on any of these items so far besides perhaps sticker shock haha (4k US. got me the camera body, 2 s line lenses, 2 appropriate memory cards, extra battery). Will update review if anything changes of course. Just buy it with the sexy 85mm lens! So freakin satisfying!

Fantastic upgrade from my prior APS-C camera.

Posted by Bradley Iwafuchi on March 19, 2023

I upgraded from my Nikon D3500, APS-C sensor camera to the Full Frame Nikon Z6II and what a joy this new camera is! I'm really happy with it's performance. There are so many great upgrades over my old camera that it would be hard to list them all but here are the big plus for me.1. Sharpness of photos even in low light condition at higher ISO's and higher f/stops. I was amazed at how much better the Z6II performed in low light over my D3500 and at higher ISO settings.2. Tack sharp Z lenses. My Z 24-70mm f/4 S and Z 20mm f/1.8 lenses are fantastic. 3. The Z6II has a menu to allow for Focus Shift shooting (Focus Stacking) Great for Landscape shots where you have a near object and want the foreground and background scenes in focus.4. Extended exposure times up to 900 seconds. I like doing Long Exposure shot with ND Filters, so this was a big plus for me. 5. The camera's ability to do time exposure shots. I haven't tested this out for Star Trail photos, but can't wait for my next trip.Sample photos. The first 4 photos were taken with the Z 20mm, f/1.8 lens. The last photo of the Sumo Wrestlers was taken on the Z 24-70mm, f/4 lens.

    Review

Posted by chuck porrazzo on March 19, 2023

The camera is absolutely amazing especially when coupled with the S lenses. I am totally an amateur who is still reading, talking with real photographers and reading a number of informative books. Was going to stay with a DSLR when I realized that it was time for a change. Looked first at the Z5 and then realized for a few more dollars I would get a whole lot more with the Z6ii. The Z7ii was too much camera and the price didn't warrant the extra expenditure. Starting now to research lenses to round out my kit. Camera went with me to Cancun and shot pictures at a dog show. It did not disappoint.

    The Z6II - what a camera!

Posted by CARL HEILMAN on March 18, 2023

I recently stepped up to a pair of Z6IIs from a pair of D750s and I love the Z camera build quality and size, image quality, features, buttons, and setup options. I especially like being able to control all of the normal viewfinder, playback, and menu functions through the EVF. I have one Z6II paired with a Z mount 24-120 f/4 S and the other with the Z mount 14-24 2.8 for pro landscape work. I have not seen star / night shooting quality this sharp corner to corner using a wide-open aperture with any other Nikon camera / lens combo I've been using since 1985 and I appreciate the extra 2 stops of low light shooting quality over what I have with the D750s. There are 2 things I would ask for on the Z6II. First, I work with critical DOF often for landscapes. I'd love to have a focus distance gauge in feet or meters as an 'I' menu option to go along with Manual focus. The Manual focus camera viewfinder graph does not show actual focus distance. The 14-24 has a lens info panel with this info, but there is no panel on the 24-120 S Series lens so I have no way of knowing the actual focus distance with the 24-120. Adding this option to the camera 'I' menu could help with any ttl lens used if the lens provides distance info to the camera. It would certainly make hyperfocus operations easier!Second - I use the Auto ISO / Auto Shutter / Auto (Faster / Slower) setting a lot and would love to have that part of the Auto ISO / Auto Shutter option in the 'I' menu so I can easily adjust the shutter speed relative to focal length (field of view) without having to go the whole way through the Shooting Menu (or My Menu) / ISO Sensitivity Settings to get to the (Faster / Slower) adjustment. Can both of these options be added as a firmware upgrade?Thank you for always trying to build the best possible cameras with so many built in features for pros!
