    Great second camera

Posted by Ernest on March 21, 2019

I am 71 yrs old and have been shooting Canon for almost 40 yrs. I was looking to change to mirrorless and tried the Canon R system and did not like the controls. Tried the Sony full frame, however I did not like the ergonomics or the controls. Tried the Nikon Z7 and love the controls and the ergonomics along with the great picture quality. After using the Z7 for months i purchased the Z6 for a second camera. I am able to carry both when hiking using the Z7 for landscapes and the Z6 for wild life. I photograph landscapes and wild life. I have the new Nikkor AF-S 500mm F/5.6 PF ED VR lens that I use for wildlife using the FTZ Adaptor, also use the 1.4 extender for 700mm.

    Best camera I´ve ever used

Posted by Zathras on March 21, 2019

I´ve owned and used a lot of cameras over the years. Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Contax, and for 21 years Leica. I´ve been a pro for 35 years. I knew the second Nikon announced the Z system that it would be for me. And I haven´t been disappointed. The image quality is phenomenal. The color the best I´ve seen. The viewfinder is a revelation. I am selling off all my other cameras and will be 100 percent Nikon from here on out. I can´t wait for more S series lenses to arrive!

Not as impressed as I thought I would be...

Posted by Scotto on March 21, 2019

Pros - Light, high frame rate (9 frames per second is the best I´ve done), high level of detail.
Cons - Color noise all the way down at 200 ISO on faces, weak atuofocus (hunts) in indoor lighting, lack of full compatibility with speed lights other than the SB5000, Max shutter speed is only 1/2000th of a sec and no battery grip yet.

Moved from a D750 to the Z6 and thought with the jump from Expeed 4 to Expeed 6 the high ISO noise would be nonexistent but I find my D750 out performs the Z6 in high ISO noise. I also can´t believe the max shutter speed on the Z6 is only 1/2000th of a sec! Wishing I had maybe waited for the second generation Nikon Mirrorless to come out... that´s why I haven´t sold my D750 yet.

Love not having to purchase new lenses with the adapter using all of my F mount lenses work perfectly. Photos are clear with no noise. Will purchase the Z7 soon.

    Excellence

Posted by Oldgoat on March 20, 2019

Nikon perfected the mirror less camera. I am glad that they did not orphan the F-series lenses. Great display. XQD chip is blazing fast. I traded my D-750 and have no regrets. Images are sharp.

    ISO Champion

Posted by DPine on March 20, 2019

I am always aware of my ISO settings as I fear getting noise and ending up making my image softer than I´d like. Daytime I usually won´t push ISO 800. Nightime I don´t push past ISO 3200. The Z6 runs toward ISO 10,000 no sweat! Amazing!

    Completely satisfied with Z6

Posted by BirdMike on March 20, 2019

It was an easy to transition from the D500 and D810. I will be phasing out my DX equipment. The Z6 exceeds my expectations.

Great 2nd attempt at mirrorless, but a ways to go.

Posted by BehindTheCamera on March 20, 2019

I have both the Z 6 and Z 7. I came from the Nikon D750. I also owned the old Nikon mirrorless crop sensor camera (was it the “Nikon A”?) Anyway, the Z 6 is my walking around camera now. While the Auto Focus user interface isn´t good, and has missing features, the camera is a classic Nikon and something that you do have to get used to using. Which is why I traded in my D750 so I´d be forced to adapt. For me, the camera is similar to some new technology. A lot of things are familiar, but a lot are new and some thing aren´t implemented and some things fail for some users. There are 2 or 3 features that need improving (1) Focus User Interface and capabilities. It really needs to really track moving objects at distance or it just won´t work for nature/outdoor sports events well. (2) The CPU in the camera is either under powered or the software is poorly optimized. The camera is slow and not something you are accustomed to today. And an “soft” (3) is the body itself. The finish of the camer is wearing off for many users and the buttons don´t light up. The former is frustrating and the later is a design decision that I think was wrong. Other than those issues, it is a good camera, and for outdoor photography a good ND filter really helps it avoid blowing out the highlights.

Transition from DSLR not too hard

Posted by GregW on March 20, 2019

I had a D750 with 5 lenses. I got the Z6 in January 2019 with FTZ adapter (slightly irritated that 2 months later it is offered for free while I paid $150). My lenses seem to work fine with the adapter, though the added length is not desirable. I have Z 24-70/2.8 on order which should be a great combo with this camera.

The EVF is pretty good, though a bit different than the SLR viewfinder. Battery life is significantly less than my D750, as is to be expected. I got just over 200 shots along with a dozen WiFi downloads while on vacation in Mexico, and unfortunately forgot my charger.

I think I will REALLY like this camera once I convert over to more Z-Series lenses.
