Nice upgrade from an older Nikon

Posted by Flagstaff on April 24, 2019

Bought it to replace a D700 used for landscape work. It´s my second mirrorless (ML) cam (first was an Oly M43, still used for travel). Was seeking a new FF Nikon platform to grow into, while getting ML live view, and reduced size/weight over comparable DSLRs, and access to the Nikon lenses I´m familiar with. Did not care about ML disadvantages in AF tracking, I do mostly static subjects.
    Pro: got all that!
Cons: please, better histograms (my D700 had RGB histograms 10 years ago), histograms that agree with the raw data, and live ´´blinkies´´ or ´´zebra stripes´´ to show clipping in still frames.

A Camera Just Short of Its Full Potential

Posted by econguy on April 21, 2019

When I was deciding which camera to trade in for the promotion, I couldn´t bear to give up my D750 because it is such a great camera and I really wasn´t sure what to expect with the Z6. Well, I have to say that I´m not sure what I am going to do with the D750 because the Z6 is great! Here´s what I really like:

    1. For my needs, the electronic viewfinder is fantastic. I can see the entire scene so much better than I ever could with an optical viewfinder. I also like being able to the live exposure and histogram.

    2. The in-camera stabilization works very well. I get more in-focus shots.

    3. The feel of the Z6 is great—it´s very solidly built and weather-sealed, which gives me a lot of confidence, and it fits well in my hands (I take a men´s large glove).

    4. The kit 24-70mm S-mount lens is excellent. It´s very sharp and had some macro capabilities built in, making it a great all-purpose walk-around lens.

    5. The picture quality and dynamic range are better than the D750´s.

    6. JPEGs straight out of the camera look great.

    7. The auto white balance is amazingly good under a variety of light sources.

    8. For newbies who start with the auto shooting mode, they´ll be happy to know that it gives great results, way better than the D750.

    9. I haven´t done much video, but so far the capabilities are great for my needs.

    10. I definitely miss the extra buttons of the D750, but the i-button with the customizable touchscreen controls work reasonably well. Being able to see and operate those controls in the viewfinder is a real plus.

    11. Focus peaking is great and very helpful in a variety of circumstances, particularly macro work; it was one important reason why I bought the Z6.

    12. The FTZ adapter is a reasonably good transition device for using F-mount lenses. However, it should have been a free add-on given the lack of S-mount lenses now. F-mount lenses work great with the adapter, but they do add a lot of weight and really detract from the user experience of the camera. Plus the camera doesn´t sit flat with the adapter on.

Nevertheless, I do think the camera falls just short of being the ideal camera for me. Below are a few suggestions for improvements. Hopefully they can be addressed with firmware updates.

    1. The focus shift shooting needs to be improved. While it offers an automated approach to focus stacking, the settings are hit-or-miss. The number of pictures you need to take depends on the focal length of the lens, the degree of magnification, aperture size, and the step size of each focus change. There is no way of knowing ahead of time what the proper settings should be. But surely there is a mathematical relationship among those settings. That is knowable and could be programmed into the camera. Or Nikon could tell us the algorithm they use. Either one would really help me take better macro pictures more easily.

    2. The peaking stack image feature is a great idea that doesn´t work with non-S lenses. That limitation was not stated in any of the promotional material for the Z6 that I read, and none of the online reviewers caught it either. I am extremely disappointed in this limitation. If this limitation cannot be fixed, I sure hope Nikon soon comes out with a couple of S-mount macro lenses.

    3. It would also be good to be able to zoom into the peaking stack image to see the finer details of focus.

    4. I was excited about the new automatic HDR feature until I learned that the stack is limited to 2 images. Auto exposure bracketing is still available, so there is a work-around, but I wondered why Nikon allows only 2 images.

    5. Other people have mentioned that they would like to clear all information from the viewfinder—I agree. If nothing else, it would help if the information could be dimmed to make it more transparent.

    6. It would be great if focus peaking worked in auto-focus mode so I could check the depth of field before I pushed the shutter.

    7. The Snapbridge app is barely ok in WiFi mode. It offers only a very limited set of controls. I would like much more access to the camera´s controls, such as the ability to access the i-menu and My Menu so I can do touch-free macro work.

If Nikon would fix those things, I would give the Z6 five stars, six if I could!

    High Power

Posted by UncleAl on April 20, 2019

I traded in my D750 for a Z6 and I won´t look back. The ISO capability is truly startling, focus tracking with my big lenses is great. With the addition of the FTZ mount I can use my collection of glass. I´m still getting used to the lag time in the viewfinder and I find the need to keep a pocketful of batteries off putting but it´s still a great camera.

    Wonderful Mirrorless Camera!

Posted by Robba on April 20, 2019

I own and kept my 750 with quality lenses. The Z 6 offered quality images and enhanced video capabilities in a smaller camera. The images are sharp, colors pleasing, menus familiar and easy to use. Nikon has been good with articles and hints on Z6 use. I appreciate it.
The camera set up is great and kit lens is very good. The adaptor allows me to use my ´´F´´ mount glass in a comfortable, well balanced manner. I´m looking fwd to upcoming newer lenses and smaller size and firmware updates for focusing.
I wondered about the Z6´s focusing having used Nikon´s 3d tracking, which us excellent. I have been pleasantly surprised st the camera ability to track fast moving objects. i read some of manual and made some adjustments. Camera WORKS and tracks well. Better than some publications have said.
I have had camera only for 3 weeks but am very happy so far and will explore video features soon.

Z 6 Amazing Low light Performance and IBIS

    Posted by Danno1602 on April 18, 2019

I have had my Z 6 for about a month and I am amazed by its performance. I know that some have had issues with focus tracking but I have not, but I do not shoot sports.
I have shot a lot of low light in my church and it has been amazing. High ISO performance is through the roof. 3200 ISO is still very clean and usable; in fact double that is still usable..
The other thing that has impressed me is the sharpness of the focus. Between the IBIS and the absence of the prism negates the need to fine tune the lenses and it shows.

I love my Z6 for its under valued features

Posted by NikonOhio on April 18, 2019

You can read plenty of reviews on the main features. I love some of the features that have gotten very little press. I have been a Nikon user since the D50 (2005) days. I was worried about using my D series lens but the focus peaking feature on the Z6 is outstanding. It is accurate and extremely helpful in focusing my 200mm F/4 D. Another feature is the enhancements to the multi-exposure settings. These features are a major upgrade from my D750. As an eyeglass wearer, I really love the eyepiece plus it is extended so that my nose is not smashed against the LCD. Lastly, the 24-70 f/4 is a great lens. It makes beautiful sharp images when paired with the Z6.

Z6 - My First Nikon Camera

    Posted by NikonZ6er on April 17, 2019

Previous m43 and Canon crop sensor shooter. This is my first foray into full frame and Nikon. Could not be more pleased. Image quality and handling are top notch. Size and weight are a bonus. Looking forward to see the future lens roadmap come into fruition. I highly recommend the Z6.

Nailing low light where others loose focus or detail!

Posted by ArtShooter on April 17, 2019

I enjoy shooting in natural light and the Z 6 lets me do just that. The high ISO performance is outstanding and autofocus is keeping up which is not a given in low light. The Z 6 is my goto camera for low light!
Strong ISO performance also enables me to get more power out of my speedlights when lighting a scene. This eliminates the need for studio strobes in the field.
I enjoy full performance with my F mount lenses but the Z system is kicking it up a notch!

It feels good in the hand

    Posted by Dirk1 on April 17, 2019

My very first impression was how good it felt to hold. I have four other Nikon cameras, mostly full frame DSLRs. Mostly I shoot video with a few stills, but as a documentary filmmaker, I´m looking for quality video, east setup, the ability to shoot quickly, the ability to shoot stable handheld footage on the go. No fuss, no muss. My usual go-to has been the D750, which has been very reliable and does a nice job. I figured the Z6 would be a nice addition. But from day one it is the camera I grab first. It simply feels so good in the hand. I also like the stabilization, the ability to make quick adjustments with the touch screen. I´m still trying to figure out the focusing system from a setup standpoint. Not sure which option works best and for what. And the touch menu for the focus is a bit unclear in that area. But that is more me not yet fully knowing the camera. All in all, this is a great camera. Now, bring on more lenses.
