Great small camera

My principal camera is a D850 but the Z FC is great as a 2nd and travel camera. Impressive performance.

Great camera.
Posted by Muriel Trahan on January 28, 2022
I purchased this camera last year right after it became available. As a 70+ year old woman my doctor told me to put down my heavy equipment and get a light weight camera. I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed this camera. I have taken pictures of my grandson in football last year and can say it did an amazing job. I used my 70-300 lens when taking the pictures. I also purchased the 16-50 kit lens and can say I am thrilled with this camera's performance. Yes there is a delay but nothing I can not live with. I just ordered the 50-250 lens and am excited to see how it will do with this camera.

I've used Nikon gear for 40 years, and I love this camera! It looks great and works perfectly. I love this camera! Thank you Nikon. You're still the BEST!

Zfc
Posted by Jamie on October 2, 2021
I wrote an earlier review of the Zfc and mentioned that I was a bit disappointed with the camera and that it was basically sitting unused on my desk because I didn’t think the viewfinder display was up to snuff—I haven’t completely made my peace with the viewfinder, but I have used the camera a lot more since I wrote that review. I have actually been enjoying using the camera and have taken some really great pictures with it. I have even managed to take some near-macro pictures of plants with the 16-50mm lens. The quality of the pictures is super and the camera is very easy to pop in a pocket or bag, or to put round one’s neck if out for a walk, which is what I have been doing. I love that the controls for exposure compensation, ISO, shutter speed are all easy to reach and use and the back view screen is really amazing. Could the display quality be better? Yes. But I am enjoying the camera nonetheless..

A bit of a mixed bag
Posted by Jamie on September 15, 2021
I was really excited to take the step into mirrorless cameras and picked this up in order to do that. Its’a a great price for a starter mirrorless camera. Unfortunately, I find the viewfinder to be of poor quality. I was expecting a sharp, clear image that replicated the view one would see with one’s eyes, much the way my cell phone depicts the world. Instead, the viewfinder image is fuzzy and pixelated, like watching a TV with bad reception. I have even used the diopter wheel to make adjustments but I find the image is still not clear. I typically use a mirrored DSLR for my photography so part of my complaint might be based in the fact that I’m use to seeing exactly what my eye sees but through the viewfinder, rather than an electronically generated image, but I was expecting better . The camera itself is well made and a nice size. I think it’s good for someone who is migrating from a cell phone or a point/shoot camera to something more professional. It’s a nice size to put in a bag or even a jacket pocket when going out. I do like that the knobs on top give quick access to ISO and shutter speed, which with DSLR’s can be hidden in menu items and hard to find. For me, I think Zfc has reinforced my decision to stay with mirrored cameras, rather than migrate to mirrorless. If you are used to mirrorless already or pint/shoot then this is a great step up.
Pros:
Small
Light weight
Retro styling is cool
Easy to access controls
Cons:
Viewfinder /electronically generated image
Lack of DX lenses -

As much fun as possible with your clothes on.

Superb image quality. Great user interface. One of the most fun camera's I've ever used. Definitely an incremental upgrade from the Z50. Superb light weight and the retro look is fun. Auto Focus is great and reliable Nikon colors are impressive.

Gorgeous and Capable!
Posted by Todd on August 28, 2021
I purchased the light brown Z fc with the 16-50 zoom and purchased the 50-250 as well. This was all for my son, and both he and I recognized that we were purchasing this as both an awesome photo-making marvel AND as a retro-design just like the FE2 of the 80's that I shot with for years and years. I've shot the Z fc almost exclusively since receiving it, and my son hasn't yet touched it. I like it that much. I am absolutely resolved to purchasing a basic black one when I can do so. Briefly, know this about me: I did a massive trade of older gear earlier this year when the Z 5 was marked down, purchasing that with the Z 24-70 f/4 S, Z 20 f/1.8 S, Z 85 f 1.8 S, and the FTZ adapter to use with my three remaining F-mount Nikkors, including my 105 f/2.8 macro purchased in 1992. (The other two: Nikon's latest 70-300 AF-P and my beloved 50 f/1.8) I love the Z 5 and recognized its few compromises that yielded such an incredible performance-to-price ratio. The Z fc is simply beautiful, fun, oh-so-capable, and quick to use. The gorgeous dials work flawlessly when I can take my time and shoot in Manual (or any other mode), but when I need to be a bit quicker, I lock the shutter dial on 1/3 steps, and the exposure compensation on C, allowing me to use the quicker command dials for setting and easy exposure compensation. ISO setting is flexible and streamlined, with many ways to change it, or one can simply allow the Auto-ISO function to work its magic. On my Z 5, I love the three User Settings, essentially allowing for completely different camera set-ups for disparate shooting situations; one occasional problem that arises, however, is that I will forget to save a change to one of the settings. On the Z fc, I enjoy the simplicity of having just the one set-up; it's just a freer experience. I just want to say that I have to admit, the aesthetic appeal of this camera is not to be denied; it's gorgeous--something I haven't really said of many cameras in the last two decades.

A true instrument of photography rising from the ashes...

My dream come true...fantastic all around state of the art technology in a retro traditional Nikon style body. Nikon, Please, Please give me a full frame version in same camera style body. Also give us prime Z lenses with aperture ring to complement the body so I can select F-Stop on the lens like the good old days. Thank you.
