    Great Camera, but...

Posted by Craig Kirkpatrick on March 26, 2023

Overall the Z9 is an amazing camera and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I used to shoot with a D850. I love the detail and low light capability. The camera is a game changer for me. For me the 20FPS speed shooting best quality raw is perfect. Almost always get a keeper! I shoot mostly wildlife, with some sports. I have 2 main issues I hope go away soon. 1. The auto focus, at least when shooting animals, is not near as good as the top of the line Sony or Cannon. 2. I really liked the lens road map Nikon put out, so I stuck with Nikon when I went to mirrorless. Then I had to wait or about 7 months to get the camera. Now I can't get either the new 400mm or the 600mm even though I'm a NPS member, been waiting since Oct. for the 600 and around a year I guess for the 400. It looks Nikon will be a great choice for wildlife photographers when/if you can get the new lens. Using the FTZ adapter is okay, but isn't as good as Sony or Cannon. Hope this helps, Craig

Great camera with a little concern on color brightness.

Posted by Jason Li on March 26, 2023

I loved this camera! It has much better ability to track bird movement during and before flight than what I used to on D850 and Z7. The view finder worked so well that I even forget this is no mirror with it. The only concern I have is that I used it to take photos of mating great egret, those green eyelid of theirs is less bright than what my wife got with D500. But it could be my white balance setting that I had it on the Auto1, and D500 had on Auto0. unfortunately I could not go back there to try again.

Beautiful camera. Need a PhD to figure out most of it.

Finally a mirrorless camera worthy of the Nikon label.

An excellent camera, even compared to my beloved Nikon D4S. Exposure control is flawless and the fast fps is great. The one flaw is that it takes a couple of seconds to “wake up” which has caused me to miss a few captures of wildlife.

    Excellent pro level camera

Posted by Jeffrey Rees on March 26, 2023

A fantastic camera that has features that even the most experienced pro appreciates. It can do things that weren't even dreamed of a few years ago. The autofocus is quick and accurate and the list of available lenses is growing.

I recently upgraded to the Z9 from my nikon Z6ii and this is truly an amazing camera for the field of work i do which is bird in flight wildlife photography. The improvements on eye tracking and staying in focus is night and day! Well done nikon for living up to your reputation and your delivery of a flagship mirrorless camera.

    WOW, I'm impressed!

Posted by William Turner on March 25, 2023

I have been using my Z 9 for about a month. I have owned Nikon Flagship models in the F, D and now the Z lines; this is the most fantastic camera I’ve ever owned. Overall, I thought the camera to be excellent. I was extremely pleased with my results. Both the exposures focus was excellent and consistent. The flexibility with the myriad of menu choices was a bit overwhelming, but that makes the camera very adaptable to your specific needs.I tried setting the shutter speeds low at about 150th of a second for bird photography relying of the advertised vibration suppression to see how far I could push down the ISO, it didn’t work that well. The shots turned out OK but were not as good as I would have liked, showing a little motion blur.On the downside I found the Controls section in Custom Settings had a few problems for me. Setting up the Histogram in the viewfinder and on the monitor took two separate steps and was more difficult I thought should be necessary. I have included a few shots; I made the mistake of setting the camera for JPEG quality instead of RAW for my first shots. So, the shots are not as good as I would have liked. I will do better next time.

    Z 9

Certainly an improvement when compared to my D5 with birds in flight. Will occasionally fire spontaneously and on one occasion in the middle of a shoot the white balance changed spontaneously.
