    Solid but not magical.

The body feels great in the hand. The banks, my menu, i menu, and custom buttons are customizable in a way that is super helpful. The speed is excellent. The camera is dead silent. The back screen is nice and convenient and helpful. There are some great video options available. There are a lot of things to love. But in my opinion the camera could still be improved in two major ways. The EVF at times gets jittery. I think it happens mostly when you start panning a fast action sequence, before you even start shooting images. It’s weird and annoying. I also think the EVF could benefit from a higher resolution. Secondly, the AF could still improve. I’ve missed shots of low flying ducks that took up my small AF box. The camera was slow to grab focus. I’ve also had the camera grab the background, looking past the subject regardless of whether the background is busy or plain sky. Interestingly, it doesn’t do that if you are in Dynamic. So for some reason the AF likes backgrounds more in wide area and 3D vs Dynamic, possibly because subject detection makes it search around for a more recognizable subject and then it grabs the background. So it’s not a bad camera. I’m glad I bought it. But it could definitely be improved with firmware fixes and an EVF upgrade. I’m running firmware 3.1.

Great camera and worth every penny. For legacy users the adapter to use old Nikon lenses is perfect!

You can't find a better camera for this price

This camera rocks. I have been a Nikon shooter and jumping the ship from DSLR. This camera was easy to get familiarize with, great ergonomics, great autofocus, great battery life and built as a tank. If you are thinking of purchasing the camera, my recommendation is ... Just do it.

    I need another

Feature packed camera to make your photo life easier. This thing really is a workhorse and if you photograph professionally, you should seriously consider this upgrade. Even with zero Z-mount lenses, it is a game changer.

    Love At First Touch

Posted by Matt Heider on April 4, 2023

Starting out with the F2 in 1977 as a Nikon shooter, the Z9 is the best camera I ever had in hands. It fits me like a glove, with shorter lenses I can even shoot with 1 hand vertically. Using its super fast and exact eye AF makes this beast the best point and shoot camera ever, lol. But seriously, it has really improved my shooting experience and the number of keepers when photographing people that are constantly on the move. Previously, I had to pay too much attention on where my focus point was that I would miss out on some of the best shots or they might have been blurry. The previous eye AF was just not reliable enough for my shooting style.Coming most recently from a Z6ii without vertical grip, my main concern was the Z9 weight being 2x of the Z6ii. Having cervical spine issues, weight is a major concern, especially when shooting with a long lens like the Z 70-200 or heavier. I rented the Z9 for a week to give it a shot. It was love at first touch. Since I'm mostly shooting people, the vertical grip feels really relaxing in my shoulders. I never liked the add-on vertical grips on my previous Nikons. I shot 40k+ images in 7 months without even using any of the high speed modes. Battery life is fantastic, haven't used my 2nd battery at all so far. And the firmware updates keep on making my camera better and better.I can't really think of anything I don't like about the Z9, even the price is pretty sweet. The card slot door is probably my only complaint as it's a little sticky since Z6 and Z7 users had complained it would open by accident. And I did like the U1-3 buttons on top of the Z6/7 models, but I got used to the shooting banks through the i-menu. For my shooting style, it seems to work better because it doesn't reset to it's original settings when you switch the camera off to change a lens.

    True Professional Body

Posted by Michelle Gritters on April 4, 2023

With the Z9, I feel like a true professional now. I have always used (and loved) Nikon products but the Z9 takes it up a notch. The body is heavier and bulkier than others but I like that -- you can feel the quality and amazing build in your hands. I love the vertical shutter and ease of the menu. The sharpness and superb quality of my images is insane! I am ecstatic with the results and am very happy I upgraded.

The best Nikon in the last 40 years!

Posted by Byron Boner Y on April 4, 2023

I have been shooting Nikon since 1983. This is the best camera I have had the pleasure to shoot with. The camera just lets you do whatever your imagination can produce. It is simply amazing.
