When the Z 8 came out, it finally felt like the tech was mature enough to replace something like the D850 for which it is touted as the successor. Z 8 is my first mirrorless camera. It feels like a D850. But improved upon. I like that. A few thoughts:- in the early days of mirrorless, the advantages of mirrorless were explained to me as "smaller and lighter" now we know that is not absolutely true. I do like the feel of the meaty Z 8 and Z 9. but hopefully we see further iterations of the smaller and lighter Z6/Z7 and Z50. Most of the lenses for mirrorless are bigger than their DSLR counterparts. Just compare the 50 1.8's. It's a head scratcher.- everyone knows the Z 8 is just a Z 9 where the grip is optional. there is no good reason why the Z 8 can't have a bunch of different shutter sounds and why the Z 9 can't have the skin softening feature.- the fake shutter sound is so weak. it's very unsatisfying.- all the mirrorless grips look like aftermarket grips. The screw on grip like the D850 is superior. You could have a reg. battery in the camera and a big battery in the grip for rapid shooting.- not factoring in autofocus capability beyond AF-S lenses was a bad move. I would only have the all-metal, AF-D grenades regardless of optical improvements in the newer lenses. it's sad that even the "premium" s-line lenses are mostly plastic.- i'm good with electronic viewfinder. it's nice in a dark scene to be able to see what you're trying to shoot.- NOBODY wants to manage two different types of media card. I would rather have two SD card slots than one CFexpress and one SD. because the camera is going to use the SD speed anyway when it's set to backup like everyone does!- everything is generally great / i concur with everyone else on all the plusses.

I have the Z9 and now the Z8! I LOVE both these cameras! The Z8 is a bit smaller and lighter but packs the same awesome punch

My second week - love the performance and ease of use.I give it four only because to be effective I still have to rebuild the suite of accessories because most of my earlier ones for D800 and D850 are not usable. Also the top display looks cool but becomes difficult to use in even a little darker setting. I can illuminate it but keep doing it is irritating.

I've been wanting to replace my D4 with a Z9 and was waiting for the backlog and any bugs to get worked out before making the plunge. Then the Z8 showed up. Just what I wanted, most of the Z9 features but smaller. The electronic shutter was the best-selling point for me. Bought it with the 24-120 package and a FTZII.I've got a great array of F mount lenses and didn't want to replace them all.Very pleased with the camera. There are a lot of great features, and I am working out my custom menus.

Love it, upgraded from D810/850 both were great cameras. Autofocus is wonderful, love the ability to track birds and animals in motion. Also love the astro capabilities, definite upgrade from the D850.

WOW!!! A compact, light-weight mirrorless with a sophisticated focusing system, speedy frame rate and spectacular sensor - when coupled with a Nikkor telephoto, it just might be the perfect camera for wildlife!

No doubt about it. This is a lovely camera, does everything I need a Camera to do! Except one thing, this would be at grand slam camera if I could hook it up on my DJI Gimbal using the Bluetooth.Because of this, I always grab my Sony for gimbal work.

While waiting for the Z8 to come off backorder status I made the mistake of buying a Canon eos R7. The pure horror of "rolling shutter" effect nearly stopped me from buying the Z8. I'm happy it didn't. The R7 is just a bad camera for wildlife photography. Afterall, BIF (birds in flight) is what I'm after. Not BSSOB (birds sitting still on branchs). I actually thought about shooting some of those BSSOBs at Canon. The Z8 has completely rested all my concerns about action shooting with a mirrorless camera with electronic shutter. My photos are sharp, color balanced and a delight to review. The auto focus and tracking are not perfect, but far superior to what I was using. Its nice to pick up a camera you enjoy using, but the Z8 is now the camera I hate to put down.

The Z8 is the new D850. Which is to say the Z8 is the best general purpose 35mm full frame mirrorless camera currently extant on planet Earth. When I first picked it up, the Z8 immediately reminded me of first time I picked up a D850 - in slid into my hand and I did not want to let go. When I started shooting the Z8, it quickly became clear that the shortcomings of the original version the Z7 have been completely overcome. AF is fast and accurate and the camera is dead quiet even if you leave the shutter sound ON at the minimum setting. The ergonomics, always Nikon strong point, are wonderful. You can set this camera up to be easily switchable between Action, Landscape, etc and you can keep your favorite controls the way you like them, all of which add up to making this the best general purpose camera anywhere. Menu navigation is intuitive. And price-wise, compared to high priced competitors with crappy ergos, the Z8 is a steal. Lastly, there is Nikon glass. All of the Z glass that I have personally experienced, including the often maligned 24-200 f/4-6.3, are absolutely at the top in their respective classes. My current favorites are the 24-70 f/2.8, are bag-o-primes, and the 400 f/4.5, which I love using hand held in low light - because I can. I could go on, but my Z8 has the 24-120 f/4 mounted, and I need to go out and shoot.
