Excellent System Camera for Field Work
Posted by MelD on March 20, 2019
I am using the Z7 with the 24-70 f/4 Z mount lens and the non-Z mount Nikon Micro 105mm f/2.8G. it´s working very well with both lenses in the field for landscape and in the studio for macro with focus shift. The EVF is fast and accurate and the tilt screen is very convenient for viewing the composition outside the EVF. Ergonomics are considerably easier for weight and carrying. I use a tripod for every shot, so hand holding is not so important and I would never trust stabilization for an important shoot. Overall, it´s a very easy and accurate camera to use with high image quality. I would like to round off the system as complete with the 14-30 f/4 Z-mount and a 70-200 f/4 Z-mount since f/2.8 is not necessary due to the low noise of higher ISO settings in this camera. Overall, a good system for field work. It should be noted that I don´t use the camera for video or moving subjects, but I do use the AF often, especially with the focus shift in landscape and macro.

Excellent images

Took my Z7 and D850 to a 4 day event I was covering. The Z7 dominated my shooting. It delivered excellent images and never skipped a beat on focus accuracy. The D850 left the bag only once during the four days for some action photos.

Love it. IBIS is Rock Solid!
Posted by RobON on March 20, 2019
Never thought I´d go for the smaller Mirrorless Pro cameras. I´m a big guy with big hands. That is, until I picked up the Z7. It fits my big hands just fine and with the addition of my SmallRig ´´L´´ bracket, which extends the base about 1/2´´ it´s perfect. What I like best about the camera is the incredible Image Stabilization. It locks onto my subject and seems to hold it still. It´s amazing. The viewfinder and LCD screen are the best I´ve ever seen. My D850 has been gathering dust since I bought the Z7. The picture quality as a result of this new IBIS is stunning. Best I´ve ever seen. I´m really looking forward to next month´s Firmware update and your new Eye Auto Focus and low light focus fixes. That this is your first foray into full frame Mirrorless is incredible. But I will say that the Z7 isn´t a replacement for the action and wildlife capabilities of the D850 and the D500, both of which I already own. The Z7 just checks all the other buttons for me and I´m lovin´ it. Works just fine with my Flashpoint Xplor 600 and Evolv 200 lights in TTL and HHS modes. As for the new lenses, they´re outstanding. I have the 24-70mm f/4 S lens and am impressed to say the least. Sharp! When the new 24-70 f/2.8 comes out next month, I´ll sell the f/4 and buy it. The smaller lens sizes and crazy sharpness of the S lenses are a Nikon Coup D´etat. Brilliant going with the extra large Z mounts. You´re the new Mirrorless Lens champs. Can´t say enough for this new camera. However, tear up Tony and Chelsea Northrup´s invitation tickets to the next Z camera roll-outs. Those two have turned out unfairly critical reviews that I´m certain have damaged Nikon and hampered the sales of the Z cameras. I can´t figure what got into the two of them, but they´re Z camera poison. On a positive note, I´m really looking forward to your coming Sports and Wildlife Z camera answer to the Sony A9. Soon as it comes out, I´m on it! Way to go NIKON!

Excellent camera

Love my Z7. The small size and low weight are important. Traveling is easier. I upgraded from a D800, which I loved, but I found myself using my D7100 more and more - especially when hiking. The many advantages of mirrorless far outweigh the negatives. I would like 2 card slots. I really wish the FTZ adaptor allowed the use of my many AF-D lenses.

Great camera, just two things I don´t like
Posted by HelenPB on March 20, 2019
Other people here have done an excellent job of extolling the virtues of the Z7, with which I heartily agree, so I´ll only mention the two things I don´t like about it: There is an annoying delay in getting the viewfinder to activate, causing me to occasionally miss shots. I try to remember to keep half pushing the shutter to keep it activated when just walking around, but I inevitably forget. The other thing is manageable, but I do find the high ISO performance is not as good as with my D850. Those things aside, I love using the Z7 and find my shots are crisper with it than with the D850, plus the light weight/balance coupled with my 300mm lens makes possible far more precise focusing than with the D850, for instance on the eye of a bird. The Z7 has become my camera of choice, and I now let my husband use the D850.

Excellent launch into mirrorless...
Posted by ArtB on March 20, 2019
I welcome this Z7 camera. Technical capabilities and quality get the highest praise from me. The user interface and documentation have room for refinement. I have no new lenses because suitable replacements for my existing go-to lenses don´t exist and are not on the projected schedule.
The Z7 ergonomics are a pleasant surprise. I was concerned about both the feel of the unit and the sturdiness of the rear display both are a pleasure to work with; but a more fully articulating display would be nice.
The low light level capture capabilities are what my dreams have been made of for many years. Low light viewing in either display, while very good, does not measure up to optical viewing under night conditions.
A single XQD card is very workable including card insertion. However, I find that card removal is a bit ergonomically difficult and could use a little more clearance from the door in order to facilitate ease of grabbing the card.
The user interface´ has a larger learning curve due to the [understandable] control changes from dSLRs. With time, it´s beginning to seem more natural.
I absolutely love the i-Button menu functionality, but wish there were additional features such as shutter release options and interval triggering that were accessible from it. Configuration of options is an area that I also feel can be greatly improved. I say that because of the marginally´ documented setting inter-dependency of interval shooting´ with shooting mode´, focus mode´ and shutter release mode´, self-timer´, etc. Setup guidance would noticeably shorten the learning curve.
My wish list: better remote triggering compatibility with legacy flashes; built in GPS and WiFi.
All in all the Z7 is for me, a great first edition mirror-less, that does have areas with room to grow. -

My Favorite Camera to date
Posted by disvet18 on March 20, 2019
I love the size and weight and layout...my hands fit perfectly and my favorite feature is IBIS since I hate tripods due to my wheelchair and it allows me to hand hold a lot more than my D850. the only negative for me is the 1 card slot which makes me nervous about losing my shots. I cant wait to see how great future Z bodies will be.

Good but Needs help to be great
Posted by DaveA on March 20, 2019
I own the best Nikon equipment on the market and love Nikon and was excited to see them get into the mirrorless market. I purchased the Z7 with a hope but based on Nikons promise that this was a great camera.
I like a lot of what I see of the Z7 however AFC tracking must be improved to make this an outstanding camera. I am a sports photographer and purchased the Z7 to compliment my D5. I didn´t expect the Z7 to match the D5 with tracking autofocus or shooting speed however I was hoping to find use for it for some of the slower close in action. Unfortunately if the subject is moving the autofocus is inconsistent at best. There are rumors that Nikon will be issuing firmware updates for the Z6 and 7 and I am hoping this happens and soon. Otherwise I have a very expensive IPhone type camera. Come on Nikon, surely you will not let Sony beat your pants off. I will be happy to update this review if this happens. -

Excellent Camera for all uses!
Posted by RC1422 on March 20, 2019
I love the Z7! I use it for Landscape and Astro photography primarily and was extremely pleased with it. The ergonomics are great and the 24-70 kit lens was extremely sharp as well. I unfortunately ended up losing it in an accident involving my tripod and a cliff up at Horseshoe bend, Arizona. But I am working diligently to get another one and the Z7 is my only choice after using it for a couple of months. You won´t be disappointed with your purchase!
