    Great Camera, but...

    Posted by SSM51 on March 20, 2019

I love my Z7. It brought back to me the joy of photography because it allows me to do the things I need easily and fast. I don´t need to repeat all the great things about this camera. Many have done that already. So what gives? First, I miss the Group Auto-Focus mode. That mode allowed me to capture fast moving objects, such as birds and airplanes. The new Wide S and Wide L don´t quite cut it because they don´t always pick the nearest object and sometimes would focus on the background! Also, the Dynamic Continuous focus is way too cumbersome to activate and to switch to a different object. However, this should be an easy firmware fix, but I don´t know if Nikon will fix it. Now, the other bad surprise is exposure when using iTTL flash. In Aperture priority mode and Manual mode, the Z7 will boost the ISO seriously and over-expose the shot. Amazingly, it does a perfect flash exposure in Program mode! My D810 always got the flash exposure right in all modes, except that in Program mode it boosted the ISO too much and stopped down the aperture to the extreme to compensate, thus giving a poor quality noisy picture despite of the perfect exposure. So, now the Z7 fixes the flash in Program mode, but messes up the flash exposure in Aperture and Manual modes.

    Compatibility

Posted by Challah on March 20, 2019

Overall I would give the my Z6 a good rating. In manual everything mode I can now use my flock of Canon FD lenses on a digital camera. However, my newer Tamron lenses have a major autofocus compatibility issue. On my D750 there are no issues. All my D series lenses have to be manually focused on the Z6. Nikon needs to work with Tamron to resolve autofocus issues. In one case I upgraded from a D series lens to Nikon AF-S lens. In another case I recently purchased a Tamron lens and sent it back for a refund, then purchased a used Nikon lens with an Identical focal length as the Tamron which saved me some money. The Nikon lens was 33% heavier than the Tamron. When switching modes from P to A to S and to M with a lens that has to be manually focused due to design or compatibility issues, the back screen went blank requiring me to reset the camera twice. Resetting the camera is an easy task. Look thru the viewfinder press menu then select settings then select reset. To avoid having to reset the camera it is best to operate the camera in manual mode and do not switch modes for this class of lenses.
On the positive side this camera is a good go to camera for shooting UHD videos.

Small body, great images and excellence performance !

Posted by Coolntn on March 20, 2019

It really is a much more convenient body to carry around compared to my D850. Not better than necessarily, but definitely more convenient. I love the lighter weight and smaller form factor and it still has nearly same performance as the D850 body. Kit Lens is a great kit lens...not a pro lens, but a very good deal for price.
Single card slot is NOT an issue in my experience with the camera as a hobbyist.

    Worth the Wait

Posted by ScottsdalePhotoMan on March 20, 2019

I´m a Nikon user for 40 years, currently owning D850 and now Z 7. I admit I am obsessed with quality and a veteran ´´pixel peeper.´´ While the D850 has been terrific, at times I don´t like the weight and with some lenses I struggle to maintain sharpness even after doing micro focus adjustments. The Z 7 fits my needs for travel with industry leading quality. I trust Nikon to continue to improve features using firmware updates. The first 3 S lenses outperform the F series and I´m looking forward to owning the entire suite.

    Fantastic initial offering

    Posted by Bluejs75 on March 19, 2019

I purchased the Z7 to go with my D850. I´ve been faithfully shooting with Nikon for over four decades! We all know the D850 is the gold standard in DSLR and Nikon has tough shoes to fill with their Z series. After using both cameras side by side in the field, here´s my professional opinion in one word: Fantastic! So why only 4 stars? Hey, for an initial offering, that´s pretty darn good I´ll say. I´ll get to the star rating in a minute.

    The 5 star features:
1.Ergonomics on the body and button layout. The Nikon easily beats the Sony´s offering in this department. Having tested a Sony a7RII for 6 months, I can qualify my opinion here. I could never get used to the Sony size and layout. The Nikon Z´s are extremely well though out for their button size and placement. All the buttons simply fall in the right place at the right time for my fingers.
2.Viewfinder. Light years ahead of the competition. Immediately upon putting it to my eye, I was in love. The viewfinder is as clear as a bell and bright. I feel like I´m looking through an optical.
3.Menu and setup system. One doesn´t think about this as much as they do when reviewing a camera. Most people are concerned with how it shoots etc. However the Menu system is just as important as the rest of the camera. It is very easy to set the Z´s up, the way you want, to get you shooting in no time. Having 3 separate User settings is great. Being able to configure the i menu is such a plus. Again, without even taking your eye off the viewfinder, you can easily switch settings on the fly using the i button.
4.The S lens system. These new S lenses are incredible. They call the 24-70 f4S a ´´kit´´ lens but by no means is it a entry level type lens. This lens and the rest of the Z lenses are indeed professional grade all the way. This Z mount is revolutionary and the lens system utilizes this mount to the fullest. The below picture was my first night long exposure using the 24-70 at ISO 800 and 30 seconds and f16. Check out those stars on the bridge lights!
5.Performance in the field. This is where I give the Z 4 stars and not 5. Let me preface this by saying that 4 stars in pretty fantastic. In AF-S mode, the camera is flawless. Being able to switch to pinpoint mode at anytime is indescribably helpful to get those tough wildlife shots when the bird tucks in the brush. The AF system is just spot on. However, in AF-C mode, the AF system comes up slightly short. Why slightly? You see, I see this as a positive and not a negative here. It´s a positive because for a first offering, Nikon almost hit it out of the park. In the field, the AF-C tracking is not as good as the D850. Tell me, what camera is? I´m listening and ready to debate you. Now, this is not to say AF-C can´t do the job. FAR FROM IT. Stop listening to people who say it can´t do wildlife. I worked with the Z. It can. I captured many a sequence of a BIF with sharp, clear results. Does the AF hunt a bit sometimes? Yes, it does. All the time? Definitely not! So stop listening to the internet followers out there. In my opinion, if Nikon can make this AF system a little more sensitive to the D850 level, they will they will have a 5 star winner on their hands and in yours too. I can´t wait to see what they do with the AF system update coming out soon.
    6. Lets discuss another internet trolling that talks about the banding hoax. I have not seen it in any of my photos. Again, stop listening to the followers out there who love to repeat what some are saying. I swear, with some of the things I read on those well known forums, I wonder if these people actually used or even held the Z camera!! I can say with confidence, if you do not underexpose your picture by 4 or more stops or bring up the shadows by that amount, you will not have a banding issue.

I recommend for those on the fence, to go out and buy it. Try it. Most big name retail stores offer a 30 period. What do you have to lose? Once you try it, you´ll love it. The future is truly here right now! Well done Nikon. I look forward to testing your 14-30mm next month. I only hope it comes in before my next adventure in the Western Caribbean during the second week of April!

Great form factor with amazing lenses

Posted by Mysterwii on March 10, 2019

I love the feel of th Z7 in my hands. Great grip and comfortable balance. The EVF is very close to the real thing of a pentaprism. Without a doubt the live view of exposure and data has quickly made me a fan of the EVF. I think the 35mm f/1.8 is amazing. Super sharp and shoots incredibly well in low light with a modest bump to the ISO. One of my favorite new features is the customizable rings on the lens. I set mine to exposure compensation and really like how quick and nimble it is to fine tune exposure. Thanks Nikon for hitting a home run with the Z7.

    Great mirrorless camera

Posted by GJust on March 3, 2019

I traded in my D90 for the Z 7. I still have my D810 with four lenses. Fortunately I can use the lenses on the Z 7 with the adapter. The Z 7 takes fantastic pictures. The setup for each environment is quick and easy. The camera focuses very quickly and accurately. It is also very comfortable in hand with just the right heft. My only ´´complaint´´ is that I wish it had a built in flash. I bought a SB 5000 for it, but there are times when a simple built in flash would have been enough.

    Heart-Stopper!

Posted by PicMan on February 27, 2019

I LOVE this camera. This will be a short review for the moment. More will come after I live with the Z7 for a few more months. For background I shoot with a D4S and a D850. My loves are both wildlife photography and landscape photography. I bought the Z7 because I got the Z6, loved it, but wanted the higher resolution. So what the heck I bought the Z7 too. While I love my 850, I have had issues with fine tuning focus on this high resolution camera. Once tuned it is awesome but I have had challenges with zoom lenses. Not so with the Z7. Out of the box this camera takes sharp photos with every lens I try with it. It is hard to take a bad landscape photo. I LOVE this camera, its ease of setup and quality of color and sharpness. I will write more in the future but I want to put my vote in for the Z7. It is every bit a NIKON and now my preferred landscape camera body.

I love this camera-my new best friend!

Posted by Gego on February 25, 2019

It takes fantastic sharp pictures! The size is perfect and feels terrific in my hands and then quiet capture is wonderful when sneaking up to get a shot without chasing your subject away. Using the adapter for my f lenses is transparent you have no feeling of using an adapter, the weight and balance is not affected at all. Just waiting for more s lenses!! thanks Nikon!
