Great 1st try
Posted by AMP1 on March 20, 2019
Great camera, def weighs less than my D5. Initially I was comparing focusing, speed, ISO... to my D5. Once I realized the Z 7 is not a D5 replacement, my I appreciated it much more. However I wish the D5 had some of the z 7´s features.
The screen and EVF are fantastic. The ´´Touch and shoot´´ and silent shooting feature are outstanding.
With the D5, I use Quantum flashes. TTL does not seem to work well with the Z 7, but I kind of expected there to be some issues, so I broke out my old SB800 which works fine.
If version 1 is this good, I can´t wait to see what 2020 brings. -

Z7 is great camera, exceeded expectation!
Posted by Marcus on March 20, 2019
Love the feel in the hand. Great manual control with everything on the monitor. Low light with a Z50mm 1.8, 24-70 mm 5.6 is exceptional. Battery life, seem to be a little short however I shot a wedding with a 1/3 of it left. Use a fx200-500mm with the adapter, to shoot a baseball game flawless. I´m l looking forward to the firmware update in May with ´´eye´´ focus. This is a great camera on so many levels. Highly recommend this product!

From the perspective of a Novice/Intermediate User
Posted by NikonNewbie on March 20, 2019
I Recently got back into SLR photography after a hiatus of 40 years. When I made the decision to do so, I wanted to do it with the best and latest equipment on the market. I naturally went to Nikon as my first stop several months prior to availability of their new Z7-series. I knew that this camera was far above my ability to leverage it to its fullest capability, but I look at this as a great learning experience. Four months later I am clearly still in the novice level of learning this extremely sophisticated digital device. When I made the decision to get back in the (hobbyist level) game, I went all in. I own the full ´´S´´ series lens, an F-series 200mm using the FTZ adapter, and an SB-700 flash.
The hardware is excellent with a fit and finish one expects from the Nikon name. From my limited technical knowledge of lens manufacturing, these are beautiful bits of craftsmanship and all worthy of a 5-STAR rating. I gave a 4-Star rating solely on the level of the documentation, which is not on a par with the camera itself. There are a significant number of customization and options available through the camera´s menu system, along with a seemingly infinite number of settings available. Remember: I said this was a high end device and well above my capabilities, so I spend a lot of time digging through the menu options and manual settings that often require me to refer to the manual to try and figure things out. There is an excellent index that usually has a topic related to whatever the current questions I may have. The DOWN side is that the content referenced IN that index is often lacking. I will share one example to illustrate. When I first began to use the flash it worked straight away. After all, it seems simple enough: attach the unit to the hot shoe, plug it onto the camera, turn everything on and shoot, right? Well the first time i did so, it worked just fine. Later on I tried to use it again, and I couldn´t enable the flash option from the camera. Nothing. The manual gave a very short summary matrix of setting combinations and little else. Nothing seemed to work. This was further compounded by my ignorance of the many abbreviations of those settings that I had no clue about their meanings. I took an inordinate amount of time reading the Nikon manuals for both the camera and the flash without a resolution. After an equally large amount of time on Google, I finally found an answer buried in a forum thread where I learned that there are certain camera MODE settings where the flash is disabled! Sure enough, I´d been experimenting with the Settings menu and had enabled one of those incompatible settings. I ended up resetting all options back to their default state. How hard would it have been if the technical writers could have simply added a short list of unsupported mode settings that disable the flash capability??? It is a trivial amount of work to include simple requirements list such to make the problem obvious. Thus far I´ve found a number of similar scenarios where a bit more effort on the documentation, or better on-screen help dialog bubbles to explain a problem, instead of presenting an obscure and meaningless error message with no way to look up the message and the problem´s resolution?
The bottom line: the camera itself, its lenses and accessories are clearly worthy of a 5-Star rating. The documentation and on-screen help messages are a clear 3-Star rating at best, hence my 4-Star overall rating. If you are already an experienced Nikon SLR user, then this beautiful DSLR will be a walk in the park for you. If, like me, you are new to Nikon SLR systems, with less advanced level skills, then you are in for an uphill learning curve. I now fully understand why there i such a huge market in the 3rd party training world. -

Returning to photography with the Z6 is perfection
Posted by FluckShots on March 20, 2019
After a decade away from photography I have found the Z6 to be the perfect companion for my renewed interest in making photographic art. The compact size and impressive lens system make this a camera to grow into. This is a great camera to take for walks and to capture life´s moments. The Nikon universe has been very helpful in both motivating and improving both knowledge and skills.

If you want the best for your photography needs.
Posted by RONB202 on March 20, 2019
I just purchased the Z7 and has been using it for all my photographic needs from landscapes to portraits. I just love the camera. I was using my older Nikon lens with the adapter, but decided to try the new Z lens made for the camera. The new lens are great. I will gladly tell my friends to try the new Nikon Z7 camera. The camera is lighter, smaller, great handling and easy to travel with.
GO! NIKON!!! -

Advance Study Made This a Smooth Transition
Posted by NomDeNicholas on March 20, 2019
I had no interest in mirrorless until cataract surgery improved my distance vision and took away my near vision. Juggling reading glasses to review my work during portrait sessions and events was driving me crazy. I literally bought the Z7 so I could do image review in the viewfinder, but I´ve been very pleased with other aspects of the camera. Most notably, I use several fast primes in my work, and I appreciate the precision of the focusing system. (I prefer OPERATING the focus system on my D850 and D500, which make better use of function buttons) Increasingly, I´ve been leaving the 58 f/1.4g on the Z7, because the two really play to each other´s strengths (Nail focus with that lens and you are richly rewarded). It also performs very well with the 28 f/1.4e and the Sigma 135 f/1.8 ART. Later this year I will probably sell my D500 and add a Z6 to the team.

best camera ever
Posted by swabik on March 20, 2019
this is the best Full-Frame camera that i have ever used.
the Z7 is so much lighter than my SLR and my DSLR. unfortunately the camera lenses for my Z7 weigh more than the camera itself. however, i am okay with that since the pros of the camera out-weight the cons of the camera.
this camera has a very to use interface. pictures on the camera can be viewed even when the lens is detached. the ability to use your smartphone as a camera remote works great. however, the smartphone app needs to be updated because of a few issues. either way, you have one less thing to carry around with you for if you are one of those users who like to have a camera remote.
a useful feature that the camera has is the ability to pic the names of the folders that the pictures will be saved to. it also allows users to pic the prefix of the file name for the different pictures and videos that are being taken.
it is also nice that i can charge the camera battery while it is still in the camera. being able to connect you camera to your computer via USB and being able to exchange data and being able to use the same connection for charging your camera battery really saves time.
the electronic shutter is also a nice feature. having the option of not using the physical shutter comes in use for when you want to be nice and quite when taking pictures. adds a lot of possibilities for those who require silence when taking pictures.
there is even an adapter that allows you to use the lenses that you already own from your Nikon SLR and Nikon DSLR cameras. just remember that adapter works better with CPu-enabled lenses than non-CPU lenses. the FTZ adapter does not support auto-focus on non-CPU lenses -

An outstanding new beginning
Posted by PhotoProBono on March 20, 2019
I am not a professional photographer, which is to say I do not rely on photography to put a roof over my head and food on my table. But I approach my photography with the mindset of one who does. With that disclosure, I am very happy with the Z7. It provides me with physical controls and software settings with which I am familiar, while adding the benefits of mirrorless. The FTZ adapter allows me to use my current lenses from my DSLR as I transition to the new S lenses which I find light, fast, and sharp.
No camera is perfect. Moreover, no camera is suited for every photographic purpose. As for me, one who shoots portraits, headshots, and performance . . . the Z 7 more than meets my needs.
The support of this system through firmware updates to address user desires for control, improve performance, and add features is encouraging that this body will serve me for a long time to come.
If you want a solidly built, flexible, and upgradable platform that is familiar for existing Nikon users . . . the Z series cameras and the files they produce will not disappoint you. -

A major leap forward, with some steps backward
Posted by parallax on March 20, 2019
I am a huge fan of the size and weight savings - a large portion of the reason I got the camera. Resolution, exposure, and most capabilities are top notch*.
The big * on the capabilities would be the autofocus system. Unfortunately, this camera utterly fails far too often. Whether it be acquiring the wrong subject (remarkably more often than my previous Nikon cameras) or failure to properly track, I end up with a surprisingly large number of shots where the focus is on the wrong subject. The touchscreen works very well for subject acquisition, but the viewfinder, not so much.
I have an intermittent problem where the camera´s sensor thinks that it is up at eye level, even when it certainly is not, and I have to manually turn on the rear screen.
Finally, I have to mention price. The Z system is clearly the way of the future, but the Z7 is priced too high. At its current price, I have a hard time recommending it. Were it a bit less, and were the autofocus fixed, I would have no qualms whatsoever.
