Good Versatile lens -- VR would be nice though

Posted by christopher bassett on June 14, 2023

Very good lens for the money and very versatile, useful range. I had the older 24-120 f/4G F-mount version and was a bit hesitant to get the Z version based on that experienced (wasn't entirely satisfied with that version of the lens) but am glad that I did finally get the Z version--big improvement over the F-mount version. The only thing I would like to see at some point is a VR version (which is one benefit the F-mount version had over the new Z version).l I would have gladly paid an extra $100-$200 for VR as I feel taht while the full frame bodies do have IBIS/in body VR, I feel that at longer focal lengths in-body stabilization is less effective and where in-lens VR has its benefits, so please make a VR version of this lens. For this, I sort of knocked it one star because I feel that a lens that goes to 100m+ should really have VR, despite the in-body stabilization (plus it would make it more appealing to APS-C / DX users who don't have the option of in-body stabilization).

    First Native Z lens.

Posted by Rodney Haynes on June 11, 2023

The lens is extremely quiet and that's what I was hoping. Looking forward to using it at my first event soon. I purchased it primarily because of the versatile range it gives me for photos and videos. I'm really liking it see so far as I test it around the house. It's fairly light weight coming from using the 24-70 mm F mount. Looking forward to purchasing more native Z mount lenses. This is the first of many more to come

There is a slight rotation of the lens at the end range

Great lens. The focal range is great. My one knock is that the lens does rotate at the end range which forces me to readjust the filters when shifting focal length.

Very nice lens at a great refurb price

Posted by Chris Dohar on June 11, 2023

Knowing that I plan to make a mirrorless Nikon camera purchase soon, but not quite ready to make the financial move now, I couldn't pass up a chance on a good price for a refurb Z 24-120mm f/4. So I put the cart before the horse, as it were. I rented a Z6 body from a local camera store and spent a day plus with the lens. While this review is far from all encompassing, in the short time I used it, I did find this lens to be fast to zoom, pretty much silent and producing very sharp images. All the strong reviews I've read about this lens and my brief exposure to it, made the purchase of this lens before a body a no-brainer. And once I buy the camera, this lens will suit me for a long while before needing another one or using the adapter I'll purchase as well for the number of F mount lenses I have. Very nice lens at a price I couldn't pass up

    My new favorite lens.

Posted by KAREN BRUECHLE on June 9, 2023

This has become one of my favorite lenses. It is always on my camera unless I am using one of my other lenses for special reasons. I use it when hiking and walking because it is so small and lightweight. It gives me the option of shooting landscapes or zooming in to take close photos of flowers, and it is great for taking photos of people. I carry it on vacations and to fairs for the same reasons. I also love that it is a constant f4 so I can blur the background when I want to do that. I have used it at small indoor concerts with great results. I have not found anything negative about it, and am extremely happy that I bought this lens.

    Great all-around lens

Posted by KARL LECK on June 7, 2023

Like other S lenses, the 24-120 f/4 is very sharp. I like the close focusing so I only need to switch to the 105 micro lens for near 1:1 imaging. The 24-120 also works excellently with 830 nm infrared converted Z7. No hot spots!

Hits all the sweet spots, except for IR.

The Z 24 - 120 f/4 is a great lens for general use and travel; I bought it as part of the Z8 kit. I appreciate the near-macro close focus of about 14", as well as the outstanding image quality, and the light weight, modest size, and extra reach of the lens compared with the Z 24 - 70 f/2.8. However, with the Z 24 - 120 on my Z5, which is converted for infrared, there is a significant hot spot at all apertures from f/5.6 to a severe hot spot at f/22. See the attached photo, which was shot at f/22. Instead of this lens for IR, the Z 24 - 70 f/4 is excellent for IR, with no significant hot spot.

    Simply Flawless!

Posted by John Hopkins on June 1, 2023

I'd been using the 24-200, and just wanted something a tad faster. The 24-120 is all I expected and WAY more! It's as crisp and clear at 24mm as it is at 120mm (or "DX cropped" to 180)!

This is a telephoto copy lens!

Nikkor glass is among the finest in the industry. the quality, clarity and color rendition are fantastic. the 24-120 ZS is no exception. I can use this lens to do very high screen images with my Z7-II. I can also be a thousand feet away and read the sponsors on the fair grounds buildings in Shenendoah County, Virginia USA. I can also freeze various billboards and road signs at seventy plus miles per hour so I can read them while my wife keeps her eye on the road. This lens is definitely worth the money.
