    Impressive

Posted by Michael Redmond on January 12, 2022

So far, this lens has exceeded my expectations. I primarily use it with a 2X teleconverter to shoot birds. While never a fan of teleconverters, the Z system changed that. I cannot believe how sharp the images are when using the teleconverter.

    Wow...

Just getting started with the lens but very happy so far. Took some shots of 3 seals on a large rock that was more than 100 yards off shore. When I cropped the photo to zoom in closer, you can see their whiskers!!

    Nikkor Z 100-400

Posted by Stephen Bondhus on January 11, 2022

great lens!!! Only had it for a short time and took it to the zoo to try it out. Comparable to the 80-400 in weight and size but the focus is much faster. Shot on a Z7 11 and handled very nicely and balanced better for the size of the lens. The short throw going from 100-400 was excellent and smooth and it didn't creep. Very satisfied with the sharpness of the pictures from center to edge. One of the best features is the ability for close focus. I would highly recommend this lens.

Great addition to the Z lens lineup

Posted by PHILIP KRAMER on January 11, 2022

I've been waiting a long time for Nikon to come out with a Z mount telephoto zoom. The cold weather in the Northeast has kept me from doing too much outdoor or sport shooting. I've tried it out with the birds in my backyard, and some closeups of our orchid collection. I have to say that I am very happy so far. The lens is well balanced, easy to hand hold. The images are sharp, and the closeups I have taken of flowers blur the background perfectly. I can't wait for Spring weather when I can do some outdoor sport photography and more wildlife.

Even better than the F-mount version!

Posted by TORI JACKSON on January 11, 2022

This lens is even better than the F-Mount version. Tack sharp and light-weight. It's my go-to lens for shooting wildlife. I couldn't be happier with this mounted on my Z7 II!

    Exceptional lens.

A perfect lens. Using it now on a Z 6II. Might get a Z 9 but can't even pre order that. A good range and design. I will also get a 1.4 TC when I can afford it! I own DSLR Nikons with great lens and the FTZ, but I have never used the FTZ.

A Great and Welcomed Addition to the Nikon Z Lens Line

Posted by Richard Angeloni on January 11, 2022

I have been looking forward to the 100mm-400mm lens since Nikon included it on the Z lens map, as I enjoy shooting wildlife and birds in flight. The Nikkor Z 100mm-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens is a nice addition to the Z mount line, as it provides a good amount of versatility for everyday shooting opportunities. This lens can be used for wildlife and sports, as well as portraits, landscapes and close-up photography. The lens also works with Nikkor Z teleconverters. The lens is about the same length as the Nikkor Z 70mm-200mm f2.8 lens, but is lighter and handles well on both full frame (FX) and DX cameras. Focusing is fast and silent, and the lens provides up to 5.5 stops of vibration reduction. Weight-dispersing Inner Balance Technology maintains a constant center of gravity when zooming, so as you zoom from 100mm to 400mm the lens balance feels the same, making for easier and more consistent handheld shooting. The "throw" of the lens, from 100mm to 400mm, is relatively short, so you can zoom with less than a quarter turn of the lens ring with no noticeable change in balance. Bottom line, I am very pleased with this lens, and can certainly recommend it. The only negative so far, for me, is that Nikon does not include a sturdy lens case with the lens, just the standard Nikon Z soft lens case. This is an expensive lens, and a hard case, that offers more protection, would be welcomed. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoy shooting wildlife, sports, and birds in flight.
