AF-S Nikkor 70-200f/2.8E FL ED VR

Posted by Paul H Gulde on April 20, 2024

I own what is known as the holy trinity and it is well named. This is an excellent lens. I did buy the polarizing filter and find I do not use it as much on this lens as the mid lens. I shoot motor racing and finding that the only drawback with all of the lens is I need to lug them around and they can get heavy. I am not as young as I once was when I had 3 bodies around my neck with attached lenses. If Nikon only came out with a golf cart

    The Gold Standard

Posted by Freeman Burgess on March 14, 2023

This lens is an amazing tool. It is more than "acceptably sharp" at F2.8. It's color rendition and image quality are on par with the best primes, and that's no exaggeration. While I am looking to add another Nikon mirrorless camera to my bag, I am in no hurry to replace this lens because it performs wonderfully on both DSLR and mirrorless.

    A legendary lens.

This lens is a legend, forgiving the photographer's mishaps, it makes it up with its superior technology and science, no doubt it is what makes DSLR forever sought after ( D850 in my case). I will never go mirrorless. NO NEED TO.

    My favorite lens

Posted by John Munson on January 6, 2022

I have no idea where I stand as far as skill level, but I have received many compliments on my photos. I started with a D5600 and a few kit lens’ then stepped up to a D850 and this 70-200 mm lens. I can not provide a technical review but I can tell you that all my favorite pictures are the ones taken with this lens. With the D850 / 70-200 lens combination, I can crop in to a photo taken from 50 feet away and see the detail of each thread of a sport coat. It is so disappointing when I need to switch it out for one of my wider angle lens’. Is it worth the money? Of corse that is relative, but it does take beautiful pictures and for me, it was worth every penny. My wife may disagree but even she admits that the photos look professional.

    AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR

Not as sharp as my older VR II version of the lens. While it is lighter, it is not as easy operate it as the zoom ring was moved to the front. Feels more plasticky. Overall the VR II was a much better lens.

    First pro grade lense

Posted by Robbie on September 11, 2019

I had my first day out with this. I was super impressed by the speed of the focus. It shifts extremely quick compared to the mid-range native lenses I have. The sharpness of images at full zoom is excellent. I was also able to be within 3.5 feet of a subject at full zoom with the lens getting good eye focus. At f/2.8 the lens has a great bokeh separating the subject from the background nicely. This is my first pro grade purchase, and I am beyond in love with it already. The only negative thing I do not like is the zoom and focus ring being swapped, but that is a very minor complaint against it compared to the abilities of the lens. I would love to know why Nikon decided to build it this way. I am looking forward to going out more with this lens and pushing it, particularly at sporting events.

The center of the holy trinity indeed.

This is the third generation of the 70-200mm 2.8 zooms I´ve owned. The first generation was great, the second generation´s improvement over the first was negligible, but the improvements in this third generation is pronounced. It is lighter weight, sharper and focuses much faster than the prior models. The increased price reflects the superior performance of this version over the prior generations. I have a D500 and two D300 bodies. The full capability of the lens is realized with the D500. The auto focus is lightening fast and easily keeps up with the 10fps bursts of the D500. It´s perfect for sports and wildlife. With nearly a hundred rapid fire shots at the horse track, shooting in the sun, every frame was in perfect focus. The stabilization works fantastically. Now the best part, it allows an old work horse like the D300 be relevant again. The low light and fast action performance of the 70-200mm f2.8 FL ED VR gives new life to older generation bodies. Although the D500 combined with this lens is an unrivaled combo, when working in the bush I couple a 200-400 f4 to the D500 and the 70-200 to a D300. The 70-200 is so capable that rarely do I find I need a next generation body to get what I need from this lens. It is worthy of the holy trinity moniker, it works wonders! The Bokeh is as good as it gets, colors are amazing and it is sharp, sharp, sharp. If you are considering this lens, buy it. If you have an older body keep it, this lens will give extend the useful life of your old gear. The attached images are taken with a D500 and D300.
