Excellent fast, small lens
Posted by Steve on July 29, 2010
This is a great lens for low light no flash small depth of field shots (such as babies, inside where you do not want to use a flash...). It´s also very small and lightweight. Excellent for travel if you can give up the zoom / telephoto flexibility.

Great Lens
Posted by Sonnet on July 29, 2010
This lense is great in so many applications. Great in low light conditions, sharp pictures, without VR you have to hold it steady or use a tripod. One of my favorite lenses for portraits.

nice depth of field
Posted by Jeff on July 29, 2010
I still consider myself a novice in terms of photography, with this being the first fast prime lens I have bought. With a D90, it is possible to obtain very sharp images with manual focus or focusing using Live View. When it is wide open, the lens has a very shallow depth of field, which I like. I took a picture of my tie rack (angled at 45º with respect to the camera), focusing on the middle tie at f/1.4. The middle tie is sharp, with the surrounding ties (near and far) out of focus. The depth of field is only a couple of centimeters! (Yes, I´m a scientist.) I haven´t had the chance to evaluate bokeh yet.
I have found the lens sluggish in autofocus, although it is reasonably quick in bright light. Forget about using Dynamic area in poor light, however. I have experienced a lot of hunting, even at higher ASA. Maybe other users have suggestions that I haven´t tried, however.
The sharpness is fantastic, which was a pleasant surprise considering this isn´t a pro lens. -

If you want a prime lens in your pack for a FX camera, this is it. Nothing else.

Excellent affordable 50mm
Posted by LS on July 29, 2010
This was my first AF-S prime lens and I like it almost as much as the price. This lens renders beautiful shallow depth of field images and it is very small and light. It is so portable that I find myself taking it with me almost everywhere.
When used at f/2, this lens becomes extremelly sharp. I enjoy using it with full frame cameras a lot. However, it is also wonderful for portraits in cropped frame bodies because it is similar to an 85mm field of view wise. -

Razor Sharp!
Posted by NikonShooter on July 29, 2010
I´m using this lens in combination with a Nikon D3, and use it for everything from weddings, family events to a general walk-around lens. I find it razor sharp at all apertures. I do wish the AF was faster and sometimes I find it ´´searching´´ in very low-light conditions...
