Not as sharp as other Nikkors I have...

Posted by ChrisS on July 29, 2010

I like the lens okay, it focuses well and the range is useful, my only disappointment with it is that it´s just by far not nearly as sharp as my other Nikkor lenses. Compared to my 85 1.4, 300 2.8, 70-200VR, 17-55 2.8, 50 1.4, and even the 24-85 f2.8-4, it´s the softest of the bunch. Not terrible, but not what I was expecting, based on all the others...
I´d still recommend it for those looking for this focal range, but don´t expect to be dazzled.

    Simply the best

Posted by Boglephoto on July 29, 2010

This lens is wonderful. Silky smooth, great ergonomics and handling. So much better designed and in size than the ´´Beast´´ it replaced. A must have with a 70-200 f 2.8 VR and a wide angle. Got for Full Frame use.

    Nothing but the best

Posted by Mike on July 29, 2010

This is my main lens for landscape and nature work. It´s a top-of-the-line lens that always delivers sharp and crisp images, even at its smallest aperture. If I was told that I could only carry one lens on a photo excursion, this would be the one. Beautiful (but heavy) piece of glass.

    Glad I bought it!

Posted by Nitram Photography on July 29, 2010

I bought this to step up my level of taking pics. I have the 50mm f1.4 and that does a great job but this lens really wowed me. It is ultra sharp to where as the 50 is soft at times. I use a D90 and am not taking advantage of the full frame sensor but will when the D3x doesn´t outrageously break the bank.
I am a semi pro that am starting out and will be using this most of the time. I am looking forward to getting the 14-24 and then the 70-200 f2.8 as well.

    Worth the lug...

Posted by Committed ´´Snapshooter´´ on July 29, 2010

While the lens is very heavy, especially in conjunction with a mid- to upper-range digital SLR, the ability to avoid using a flash in many circumstances is a HUGE benefit. When you pair its clarity and color rendition with a decent digital body, the results are astonishing. Every parent at our school asks for our photos. They are the best.

Just don´t ever forget this on an airplane...you´d be lucky to see it again...and the acquisition cost is the down payment on a car.

    Sharp and easy

Posted by Whiteblaze on July 29, 2010

I use this lens as my back-up to my 85mm when I´m doing a Senior Session. I love how sharp it is at 2.8. It´s a great zoom lens.

    top shelf lens

Posted by nikonshooter on July 29, 2010

This lens is my primary choice when shooting weddings. Very sharp detail, accurate color, and good focal range with fx sensor. This lens with the D700 and SB900 comprise my flagship gear for wedding day. Sometimes a little funky at 24mm shooting groups at short distances. ( It seems at times that details in the left side of the image may be slightly soft - overcome in editing / processing. F stop selection / depth of field is important. ) A heavy lens for carrying around all day, but well worth the effort. Capable of producing images that at times may be too sharp. An example would be the detail in the face and skin of a bridal close up. Nikon quality in action.

Fast AF , but imho needs update and VRII

    Posted by Hawaii-Geek on July 29, 2010

Very Fast AF , and accurate too.
    Very useful lens. Period

but, imho ... distortion could be less, and sharpness a little more accross FL´s at f2.8 (for the new high RES bodys in the future) ...

And what I would really like to see , and would buy is VRII. (or should I say VRIII for wide angle zooms ... and Video) :)
