Well built, professional grade, great camera

Posted by SGMedia on December 10, 2019

Really excellent piece of machinery. The build quality of this camera is the reason I chose Nikon. I was looking into both Nikon and Sony, and Sony just felt like it was not durable and on a professional level. The photos are super nice, the ergonomics are very nice, the video is extremely nice. I am super happy with this camera and every time I use it I fall in love with it. Highly recommend.

Love it, just one thing I wish for

Posted by UpstateAl on November 29, 2019

I love the camera !! It is lighter, is sharp , and intuitive to operate. I just have one request for Nikon. I would love to have image review automatically on the back of camera display, WITHOUT it showing up in viewfinder. If I don´t need to image review, I have to hit shutter button lightly to get back to being able to take a shot. Maybe a future firmware update?

    Good first entry into mirrorless

    Posted by AdamR888 on November 20, 2019

I use my Z6 for a multitude of things. It is a well rounded camera. However, I mainly use it for my family photography business. I don´t have any major complaints about the camera. For Nikon´s first full frame mirrorless I think they have done well. Auto focus with the Z lenses is faster than other Nikon DSLR´s with G lenses that I have used in the past. Auto face and eye detect are okay but they definitely need improvement

My only complaint is the single point focus square. It is way to big and the pin point is way to small. I am not sure why NIkon didn´t use the same focus point size on their other DSLR´s. This, in my opinion, is the biggest downfall of this camera. This really needs to be addressed. The focus point is so big that you cover half the face. When you zoom in to see where you actually focused it is rarely on the eye. This is frustrating as a portrait photographer. Nikon really needs to fix this issue.

Nicely implemented mirrorless technology, full Nikon image quality!

Posted by Reed on November 19, 2019

I have shot Nikon film cameras (RF and SLR) and DSLRs for many years. I had a hard time deciding between the Z6 and Z7. Now that I own the Z6, I see that I did not go wrong choosing the Z6 for my application. Since before buying the Z6, and still, I use a Df and D850, for very different applications. The Df is great for fun shooting with traditional camera controls and with any Nikon lens I may want to use, from pre-AI to the latest. The D850 is my go-to for maximum resolution, say for landscapes or especially for wildlife (which I shoot a lot).

Having used mirrorless cameras extensively in the past (Micro 4/3 Lumix), I was already familiar with many of the benefits. But, I wanted a full-frame mirrorless. I have friends who own Sony, but they operate more like computers than cameras, with too many menus. Leica was an option, but I wanted a Nikon, to utilize my wide range of Nikon (and now other) lenses.

So, I bought the Z6 as a high (not ultra) resolution camera that is great for travel and street photography (another favorite area). Importantly, I have already begun adapting Nikon F, Leica, Rolleiflex SL, and Pentax lenses to the Z6, and having a ball with it. Finally, I can truly use one body as the foundation for all kinds of fun lenses!

The F adapter is truly seamless. I already used the Z6, 300mm f/4 PF, and TC-14E III converter to photograph hawks in flight on a trip where I needed to travel light. I´m very pleased with the result. The other third-party adapters are mechanical-only, but I can live with that. The magnified manual focus tool is super-useful.

So, rather than replacing the D850 or Df, I find the Z6 fits a nice third application area, and a broad one. The Z7 would have also been great, but for now, the D850 remains my ultra-resolution solution. It´s also an amazing camera, and needs no replacement for now.

Nice job, Nikon. The product impresses me in terms of making a new foundational technology in the form of a camera that is truly of Nikon quality, and in delivering excellent image quality.

    So far so good!

Posted by Casa on November 19, 2019

I bought the Z6 as a compliment to and backup for my Nikon D850 when it´s sitting and it´s gimbal attached to big glass and I need another body to get a quick shot. I also bought it because I want to do more video. My first real experience with the camera was with it set at 12 bit, shooting dolphins out in the Pacific ocean, really love the 12 FPS for that and got some great shots. I love its size and weight to stuff in my bag for day trips my 70-200. I´m also loving the electronic viewfinder, knowing exactly what the composition of my photo is going to be through it is handy.

    Nice feel and balance.

Having used Nikon dSLRs for a long time, I was concerned about the EVF, which turned out to be very confortable to use. When paired with the 14-30 zoom, it makes for a great landscape photography combination.

Having fun with the camera, still learning

Posted by TomH on October 30, 2019

Things I love about the camera
    1. The quality of the pictures are great
    2. The small size compared to my DSLR
    3. How quiet it is when taking a picture even when not in silent mode .
    4. I see the exposure in the camera, I now have fewer pictures to sort through because I know I got a good exposure on the first attempt
    5. I´ve had fun taking video.
    6. No noticeable noise at ISO 1600
    7. I like having my location included with the picture. ( Also see con 6)
    8. I being able to transfer pictures to my phone

Things I had to adjust to/learn.
    1. I need to press the shutter button as I bring the camera up to my eye, so ´.m not looking at a blank/black screen
    2. Coming from a DX camera with a 16-85 lens to a FX camera with a 24-70 lens is harder than I thought.
2.1 I miss the zoom, I would position myself for a shot as I would for my old camera and would not be able to fill the frame.
2.2 Depth of field has now become much more important. I´ve switched to Aperture priority mode from program mode. Having high quality pictures at higher ISO setting has been very helpful

    Things I don´t like.
    1. When attempting to frame an object using auto area focusing it tends to focus on the frame not my subject. There isn´t anything I can do other than switch to a different focus mode. If it focused more in the middle and I wanted to focus on the edge then I could point lock focus then recompose.
    2. When I attach my flash, the metering bar starts behaving as though I´m in manual mode, no matter what mode I´m in. It covers up my exposure compensation setting. I haven´t been able to figure out how to use that feature to make my pictures better. Nikon support could give me advice that helped either.
    3. I miss the built in flash for some back lit subjects. Available light photographs are actually very good.
    4. The FTZ adapter is a pain to use when switching to my other lens. I´m hoping the new 100-400 lens comes out soon and is affordable.
    5. I can´t separate focus lock from exposure lock.
    6. I don´t like having to start an app on my phone to get location set in the picture. There are many times I started taking pictures and realize I forgot to start the app and am not getting location.

over all the pros out weigh the cons and I would make the same decision today. I´m still learning

    Highly refined, joy to use

Posted by Observer on October 29, 2019

A beautifully-designed tool with a satisfyingly robust build. Comfortable, intuitive controls, keen autofocus and stellar image quality slightly hobbled by wake-lag and some fiddly AF modes. Video surprisingly good straight out of camera.

    It´s an average camera

Posted by LAFotographee on October 21, 2019

To me, the Z6 is just an ok camera. At first, I was all excited and was about to ditch my DSLRs, however, the more and more I shot with it, I quickly lost interest.

For low lit areas, the Z6 is not your go to camera. The 4s lens that came with the camera is pretty useless to me as a professional. However, it´s a good lens for still objects.

I would still recommend this camera.
