Fine camera -- would be 5 star, except for tracking.

Posted by ezed on October 17, 2019

I have a Z6 and use the F4 24-70 Z, as well as a couple of longer F4 S lenses with the FTZ adapter. Coming from the micro 4/3 world, I especially like the Z6´s low-light/high iso performance and its new eye tracking. I´m disappointed that it doesn´t offer better action tracking, but NIKON was up-front about its features and limitations. I haven´t done video, but would try it, if I had a compelling application. I would love to see a light-weight nifty-fifty for walk-about shooting. I tried adapting the F2.8 S 50 mm lens, but with the FTZ, there is little weight or size advantage over the 24-70.

By way of background, I´m an amateur but know my way around cameras reasonably well having used a variety of film and digital cameras over the years. I chose the Olympus micro 4/3 package when it
came out especially for size and weight. I decided to try the Z6 when I realized that the weight difference with the Z6´s mirrorless body was not that great especially when using Olympus´s PRO lenses.

Like many amateurs, I stick to available light as much as possible as I don´t do enough formal photography to justify the investment in a seldom-used lighting set-up. I do have an SB-400 for fill when I do casual portraits.

    Very impressed with this camera

Posted by FrozenHiker on October 17, 2019

I wasn´t actually in the market for a new camera body but my backup camera (D800) was destroyed in a rainstorm. I was looking for a camera that would be used primarily for night photography. Initially, I thought the D750 would be the right choice, but as I looked at the specs, the Z6 seemed like an upgrade over the D750.

After receiving the camera, I took it out and put it through its paces doing many different types of photography (urban night, light painting, landscape, portrait, automobile, and wildlife). The results have been amazing. While my D850 is still my first choice for my nature photography work, I was very impressed by the z6. In fact, a couple of the landscape shots taken with it have already made their way into my show set of images.

So far, I have been impressed by the iso performance, image quality, and built in stability. It was also a pleasant surprise that when importing the photos into Lightroom, the camera profile is part of the import process. I do think that the noise reduction settings are a bit high. In most cases, I am am able to just clear those out without seeing any noise in the image.

The only criticism I have with the camera is the lag time for the viewfinder to turn on, and the lack of native lenses. I would be absolutely thrilled if Nikon were to offer a version of the 14-24 f/2.8 for this camera.

I loved the first one so much I got a second one!

Love these cameras! I am a Nikon shooter and have been a long time. But when I had to shoot video, as most of us do now, Canon was the only real option because of the Dual Pixel Auto Focus. The Nikon Z6 changed all that! I sold all of my Canon gear and I put more money into the Z system lenses. They are truly amazing. I like that I can shoot in ways I really couldn´t before. Tilting touch screens along with accurate focus makes impossible shots possible.

A major change in the Nikon cameras finally arrived !

Posted by Photogiorgio on October 17, 2019

I have being using Nikon cameras for decades, but this latest new production is very pleasing and amazing. I truly love it. The quality of the pictures is much better than the previous D750 and D600. The camera allows me to shoot hand held pictures at 1/20 sec or 1/13 sec very sharp because of the VR in the camera itself. The EVF is wonderful and I am using high ISO more than ever before with beautiful results with minimal loss of sharpness. Lately, I started using the Video, primarily for short shots using the slow motion High D and I love it.
I wish the AF system would be easier and the megapixels would be in the 30 to 40 million range, but I realize we are then entering in the Z7 field.
So far I have not used yet the new lenses for the Z cameras because I have innumerable old Nikon lenses that are still wonderful. I like the ´´eye detection´´ , even if other manufactures have been using it before. It is a new step for Nikon.
I am an advanced amateur´s photographer and since I have been using the Nikon Z6 , I have been doing much more photography than before. I love this little camera!

Posted by joelav on October 17, 2019

´´A breath of fresh air´´ My Nikon Z6 is an improvement over any other Nikon I have been proud to own and use. The Video capabilities are outstanding(after some firmware upgrades that fixed many bugs-thanks Nikon) The autofocus, sharp and responsive controls with Z lenses, butter smooth 120P, and most important the best looking HD picture I have ever delivered, make this camera a complete game changer for me...Photowise, with some getting used to has been the BEST piece of photography equipment I have ever used...Im having fun again in my work, and I am able to expand my craft and creativity to a new level like never before...AND it keeps pace with anything Sony can do and for me, does it better...Great Start Nikon looking forward to new models and PLEASE implement a good trade up program so I can keep up with your new models...EXCELLENT!!!!

    Extremely Pleased!

Posted by AerialPro on October 5, 2019

I´m a full time commercial photographer. I purchased a Z6 and Z7 for use with our aerial photography. We are old fashioned and still use a helicopter! The high resolution of the Z7 is perfect for what we do. I still have 2 D5´s and 2 D-500´s and a D810, but as of now, they are taking a break. I would get one of these as soon as you can! You won´t be sorry!

    Nikon does mirrorless right

Posted by PilotJimL on October 5, 2019

I ditto what NikoBoyForLife said. The D750 was great, but the Z series is up another level. The noise capability is even better, more than twice, plus you see it in the viewfinder (along with almost anything you need, including menus). The FTZ adapter is terrific. I got the little Kirk L bracket for the FTZ. No more ports blocked.

    Almost perfect

Posted by NikonArt on September 20, 2019

Awesome camera. Going from mirror to mirrorless is a game changer. I tend to play rough with my tools. The Z6 is built like a tank. My only complaint is the location and too-light-touch on the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons at the tip of your finger tips in the grip. Don´t get me wrong I love the feature, just the buttons are too tall and easy to press accidentally.
