    Great Camera!

Posted by Wilson on October 17, 2019

Very pleased with it overall, but the firmware isn´t quite there yet with the autofocus. Version 2.01 is pretty good, but not yet on par with the D-750´s. The eye autofocus can use more work. It would be a plus if it could charge while being powered by a USB 3 cable, as well.

I´m not going back to my DSLR.

Posted by Kelle on October 17, 2019

Having the EVF respond in real time to any changes in the exposure settings is wonderful. I´ve really been enjoying inages in low light/ high ISOs that would´ve been a problem before my Z6. The moving subject focus hss been much better than I exoected snd I´m having no problems getting the images I wanted while covering different sports. I like the size and solidity and have put the weather sealing to the test a few times with no consequences. The button layout is very intuitive- much better thsn the competition. I found I could leave my gloves on for many cold weather outings and still operate all the buttons. Since the addition of the eye tracking update, I can´t think of one single limitation on this camera. I have no issue with the single memory card. The QXD cards are very robust, fast...and exoensive. The Z mount lenses are crisp, light and easy to handle. With the FTZ adaptor, I am using some fine, old glass with wonderful results. The EVF makes nailing the exposure on the all manual lenses straight forward. With the Z6s low light performance and silent shutter option, I´ve been able to get quality photos of my kid´s indoor school events/ concerts without being noticed. Unlike my DSLR, no flash was needed! I´ve been very impressed with the Z6´s landscape capabilities, too. The swing up rear screen and Snapbridge app makes it easy to shoot from lower postions remotely and with no shutter shake. I like having downsized photos transferred to my phone for immediate sharing. I would not hesitate to buy this camera and lenses again.

    Excellent mirrorless camera

Posted by TonyLo on October 17, 2019

This camera can do some many more things than a DSLR. I tried other mirrorless cameras but always like the Nikon system and this camera is a vast improvement over other I tried. I was hesitant at first after listening to some You Tube reviewers but I think some of them just want to say negative things in order to build a following. My only negative is that I wish they had a Z lens like a 24-120. The 24 to 70 just isn´t a good range for me. I use my 24-120 Nikkor F lens with the adapter but it makes it bulky. I am waiting for more Z lens to come out to make it realize it full potential. The positives are just too numerous to list. I would definitely recommend this camera for any serious photographers.

    5 Star Body / 3.5 Star Ecosystem

Posted by Minivini on October 17, 2019

First, I really love this camera. I haven´t felt “held back” in using it a single time. I hate that Nikon had to branch away from the venerable F Mount, but I understand the reason, and they did a fantastic job with the FTZ Adapter.

That said, the ecosystem feels like it´s being developed and delivered in a very spastic manner. I get the initial f4 zoom options. I bought in with the 24-70 to have access to a native lens, and I haven´t been disappointed. We´ve been at this a year now, and the lenses that are currently available with the native Z mount do not match the Nikon designated “levels” presented with the body selection. Why, for instance, is Nikon widely filling out the f1.8 lenses while ignoring f1.4 examples? Traditionally the f1.4 lenses have been the workhorses of the lineup (on the short-standard end), and have been available at a notable, but not outrageous price increase. According to Nikon´s own chart depicting each body with its correlating demographic, yet the workhorse lenses are conspicuously absent (24-70/2.8 not withstanding). Yes, the f1.8 are razor sharp, and that´s great. You can´t render backgrounds as pleasing with f1.8 as you can with f1.4, and that´s not a subjective statement. It just seems like a strange rollout schedule.

The other thing I´m finding troubling about the ecosystem is cost. The camera bodies came in about expected (especially now that the body/demographic has made it into the wild. The lenses, though? When Nikon does release those f1.4 lenses, are they going to be priced astronomically? When I go back through LightRoom, one of my most used lenses has always been the 50/1.4 in various iterations. Traditionally it´s been a $450-600 lens depending on the era. Now that you have the 50/1.2 in the pipeline, I´m concerned that it´ll be a $1000-1500 lens based on how you´ve priced other f1.8 lenses (which means I won´t be replacing my 50/1.4G). Also, in terms of the ecosystem, the very long delay in the very under-spec´d MB-N10 has been very frustrating. I do feel it´s priced appropriately, though. Where is the WR system that´s been back ordered for years, now. The WR-R10 is a perfect companion for the Z series.

In short, this is a new direction complete with a whole new catalog of bits. The Z6 and Z7 bodies are splendid. The quality of lenses available is also wonderful. I just wish Nikon has broadened the release a little more with the workhorse glass made available sooner. Overall I´m very satisfied because I have a few really good, fast F Mount lenses. I´m anxious to make the switch, however, and the new shooters coming to Nikon don´t have that existing collection to use while waiting it out.

    Love the Z6... mostly

Posted by JimAiko on October 17, 2019

After trying another brand of mirrorless camera, (which I promptly re-sold) I was very happy when Nikon announced it´s entry into the format and overall I´m very satisfied with the Z6. I´ve been shooting Nikon for 30 years so the controls were easy to get used to. I´m still trying to remember to use the Info button instead of rifling through the menu, but old dogs learn slowly.
I shoot schools, dance and corporate events. The Z6 excels in almost every application. The eye detection feature added with FW 2.0 works very well, although not 100%. That said, I rarely have an unusable image due to focus compared to the D850 which seems to love to focus on ears. Skin tones are spot on and the 24-70 is sharp and quick to focus.
On the downside, am I the only one who has difficulty composing through the Z6 EVF? I find that unless my eye is crammed hard against the viewfinder, it´s difficult to see all four sides of the frame at once making it hard to place the subject. We end up with a lot of poorly composed portraits to crop. I love the quality of the EVF, but maybe too much of a good thing? That said, the color rendition, resolution and ease of use make the Z6 a great and affordable choice for volume photography.
Like some others, I too miss the two button card format feature, but that´s minor.
The one feature that sealed the deal for me is silent shooting. I take a lot of dance performance photos as well as first communions and other church ceremonies. People are amazed when I demonstrate that I´m actually taking pictures without making a sound. I also get a lot less dirty looks as a result.
Lastly, I look forward to seeing some new native glass. I´m hoping for a faster, lighter version of the 28-300 zoom lens. Christmas is coming so who knows?

Great 1st step for nikon into mirrorless!

Posted by PhotographyRoyale on October 17, 2019

I have always been in the nikon going from a d7100 to a d850 and now to a z6 , it´s been the decision I have made. Granted, I´m a sports photographer 1st then fashion and in studio photographer next, this z6 has been a joy to work with and I´m also enjoy pushing the camera to create video content. I look forward to see what additional firmware updates can be push to improve the autofocus speed along with auto eye, but that aside you get great quality images with this tool.

    Underwhelming

Posted by Desire on October 17, 2019

I purchased this camera wanting a smaller and lighter professional grade smart and versatile camera and am disappointed. It is not that much lighter than the DSLR I was using before. The focus function is difficult to pin down and manual settings are not dependable. The xqd card is difficult to find— just landed in Napa and realized I left mine behind in the reader. I´ll have to take photos in my iPhone because I can´t get an xqd card locally. I should not have spent the money on this camera and lenses.

    Great Camera

Posted by lavawill on October 17, 2019

I shot every thing from Real Estate to To sports head shots and nature. The focus is very fast I have the highest keeper rate shooting polo than I have on any other camera. with Architecture having on screen levels and histograms helps a lot. And If your eyes are aging a little like mine and you cant see the controls clear anymore you can do everything though the viewfinder as soon as you get used to the layout of the buttons and get rid of the glasses. With my dslr´s glasses were on and off all the time now I shoot with out them, what a improvement.

    Z6 User Comments

Posted by Bionic on October 17, 2019

I am a lifelong Nikon user who recently acquired a Z6 to use as a second to myD850. By and large, I am impressed with the camera, particularly it´s low light capability (why I chose the Z6 over the Z7). But there is one issue I am finding annoying. There is no way to lock the sub-control (joy stick) to prevent an inadvertent bump from moving the focus point. All my Nikon dslr´s have a switch around the sub-control which can be moved to the “L” position to prevent that.
