NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S

Well-built, sharp, portable and fast focusing.

I splurged for my birthday with the purchase of this lens, and I couldn't have picked a better gift. I haven't had that much of a chance of getting out with my Z8 and the 100-400z, with all the rain we've been getting out here in Oregon and also having knee surgery. But the few times that I have been able to wander around, I have found this set up amazing. The lens handles really well and is well balanced with the Z8. The exposures have been on the money and the focus could not be sharper. I've always had the 24-120z on the camera, but it's going to be hard to keep the 100-400 in the bag.

Outstanding!Great sharpness, incredible clarity and not much of weight.Will be outdoors in no time. Incredible how Nikon has perfected its lenses to an almost prime quality.

Exactly what I was looking for. It fills a needed gap in my focal range and I love its color rendering.

Great all around and versatile lens. It's very sharp and reproduces excellent color. It's what I would expect from an S lens. Comparing it to my 180-600 it is sharper and has a bit more clarity. While I like the 180-600 and have used it extensively on my last trip to Africa, it's now relegated to the camera safe for most trips.

Just got my 100-400mm and am doing my early testing. So far this lens meets my expectations as a "S" lens, very sharp and smooth. I bought this lens for a travel lens to complement my 24-120mm when I travel light and it will fill that spot nicely. I also own the 180-600mm lens and at times when I am hiking for wildlife a lighter lens will be appreciated. Through my testing I can see using this lens for butterfly's next summer, with the close focus and sharpness I can see this becoming my lens of choice for those sessions.

I used the 80-400 as one of my most used lenses during my wildlife career in combination with the 500 f4 and 500 f5.6. This lens is a massive improvement on the 80-400. I tested the 180-600 and would rather use a shorter lens with better IQ, mobility and flexibility to use with a 1.4 TC when needed that the 180-600 that is much bigger and difficult to handle in a Safari truck or on foot hiking. I always use 2 bodies and lenses when on wildlife trips. I also use the 400 f4.5 with a TC1.4 with one camera and the 100-400 on the second for flexibility.

Great lens! I not only use it for wildlife but landscapes as well. I am able to zoom to a specific feature of the landscape with the 100-400mm. It makes for some really interesting landscape shots!
