NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S

This lens was added to our Z 14-24mm S,Z 24-70mm S, Z 70-200 mm S lenses. We also use the TC 2.0x teleconverter.We use these with a Z9 and a Z8. Giving us multiple options for shooting wildlife and landscape. The close focus is fantastic.A tripod does make the lens easier to use.The only thing we changed were the mounting foot on both the 70-200 and 100-400 so they would mount on the arca swiss mounts without adapting plate.

I was using the 180-600 but the image quality and larger aperture on this lens is fantastic. I'm getting the TC and not going back!

Bought this lens for birding on trails, trips to the zoo & other trips where the 100-400mm coverage will allow me to just carry one lens. I’ve found it to deliver sharp photos & have been using it more frequently than anticipated. It’s a heavy lens but the versatility it provides is worth the extra weight in my opinion.

Excellent mid range zoom with tremendous versatility. I have used this lens for portraits, travel, wildlife, and even as a macro lens. Paired with the 24-120mm F4 your have a kit that allows you to travel light yet still cover 90% over the situations you find yourself in. Overall a very sharp lens, great bokeh, reasonable weight. It should be a part in any serious shooter’s gear.

I was on the line choosing between the 400mm f/4.5 and the 100-400mm f/4.4-5.6 lenses. Since I already had the 600mmPF lens, I chose the versatility of the 100-400mm. As a wildlife photographer, I’ve taken approximately 3,000 shots with it in the last 2-weeks and to say I’m happy with it is an understatement. Exceptionally sharp with and without my TC-14. Because of its sharpness, close focus ability, and fast focus lock-on, my 600mm has taken a back seat for a while and the 100-400mm stays attached to my Z9. I would recommend this lens to anyone needing something as versatile in that focal range.

Whether I’m shooting wildlife, sports, or landscapes, the results are crisp with excellent contrast and beautiful color rendition. Even wide open, this lens performs brilliantly.Autofocus: Fast, accurate, and silent – it locks on to subjects quickly, even in challenging lighting. Paired with eye-detection AF on Z cameras, it makes wildlife and bird photography a dream.Build and Handling: The lens feels solid and durable but is surprisingly lightweight for its range. The zoom ring is smooth and well-damped, and the customizable function buttons are a great touch for quick access to settings.Vibration Reduction (VR): The built-in VR is superb. I’ve handheld shots at 400mm with slower shutter speeds than I thought possible and still came away with tack-sharp images.This lens is a true workhorse and has already become one of my favorites in my kit. Nikon nailed it with the 100-400mm Z – if you’re serious about telephoto photography, this is a worthy investment.
