    First pro grade lense

Posted by Robbie on September 11, 2019

I had my first day out with this. I was super impressed by the speed of the focus. It shifts extremely quick compared to the mid-range native lenses I have. The sharpness of images at full zoom is excellent. I was also able to be within 3.5 feet of a subject at full zoom with the lens getting good eye focus. At f/2.8 the lens has a great bokeh separating the subject from the background nicely. This is my first pro grade purchase, and I am beyond in love with it already. The only negative thing I do not like is the zoom and focus ring being swapped, but that is a very minor complaint against it compared to the abilities of the lens. I would love to know why Nikon decided to build it this way. I am looking forward to going out more with this lens and pushing it, particularly at sporting events.

The center of the holy trinity indeed.

This is the third generation of the 70-200mm 2.8 zooms I´ve owned. The first generation was great, the second generation´s improvement over the first was negligible, but the improvements in this third generation is pronounced. It is lighter weight, sharper and focuses much faster than the prior models. The increased price reflects the superior performance of this version over the prior generations. I have a D500 and two D300 bodies. The full capability of the lens is realized with the D500. The auto focus is lightening fast and easily keeps up with the 10fps bursts of the D500. It´s perfect for sports and wildlife. With nearly a hundred rapid fire shots at the horse track, shooting in the sun, every frame was in perfect focus. The stabilization works fantastically. Now the best part, it allows an old work horse like the D300 be relevant again. The low light and fast action performance of the 70-200mm f2.8 FL ED VR gives new life to older generation bodies. Although the D500 combined with this lens is an unrivaled combo, when working in the bush I couple a 200-400 f4 to the D500 and the 70-200 to a D300. The 70-200 is so capable that rarely do I find I need a next generation body to get what I need from this lens. It is worthy of the holy trinity moniker, it works wonders! The Bokeh is as good as it gets, colors are amazing and it is sharp, sharp, sharp. If you are considering this lens, buy it. If you have an older body keep it, this lens will give extend the useful life of your old gear. The attached images are taken with a D500 and D300.

    Simply Awesome

Posted by CaymanJim on June 21, 2018

Finally broke down and traded my beloved 70-200 f/2.8 VR2 for the new version. Only took one day to get use to the zoom ring placement. The improvement in sharpness and color rendition was worth the steep price. I highly recommend the new ´´E´´ version for anyone interested in the best. Great companion for my D850.

    Fantastic Lens

Posted by Caliphotog on May 26, 2018

I recently got back into photography and decided to spend the money on quality equipment. After much research, I recently purchased the D850 with the F/2.8 14-24mm, 24-70mm and this lens. While the lens is a bit heavy, the results are outstanding. The pictures are very crisp, the focus is extremely fast and the f/2.8 allows for creativity. Obviously, not cheap but the photos are priceless.

    Sharp and Fast!

Posted by SantaMonicaShooter on February 22, 2018

Bought this lens a couple of months ago as a replacement for my old VRII. It´s so much sharper, faster at focusing and I love the zoom ring being at the front. An amazing improvement on the previous model.

    Unparalleled Sharpness

    Posted by Scripps23 on September 14, 2017

Nikon´s latest version of its 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens is one of the sharpest of all the many Niikkor lenses I own. The images captured with this lens appear to be absolutely lifelike.

It will never disappoint you or let you down

Posted by Wesam on August 26, 2017

In a nutshell, the greatest 70-200 lens ever made. I tired to find something wrong it, but I really ailed. Thank you Nikon for making sure I don´t miss the shot when I´m travelling, and making me no longer hesitant about shooting wide open.

    Drop-Dead Sharp; Killer Fast

Posted by Jackw on July 27, 2017

I´ve had this lens most of 10 months; mated to a D750. It has worked flawlessly; meeting its sales literature in all material respects. It is steeply priced; thus difficult for a relative novice to justify without a few years of experience to warrant the expense. That said, it IS a lens that can make one a better photographer. You can´t spend that much without a commitment to improve…. And I think I have. Its focus speed is astounding. Properly used, it´ll “catch” movement and freeze it solid. Mounted on the camera, it´s a two-handed operation. The “remote” focus buttons [4], however, make the process easy and comfortable. It´s a well-sealed and reasonably bomb proof [not stupid-proof] lens that has delivered quality 100% of the time. Presently, it lacks only a better photographer on the other end. While a tad heavy and honestly too spendy……..it has been very much worth the expense. Almost universally, it is the first lens on my camera for portraiture, sports, and wildlife…….. If you can…… get it.
