Some quirks but I love it!

Posted by Br Anthony Brackett on April 3, 2026

Just bought this camera and have also the Z6 and Z7ii! Love the video options and capabilities! Unfortunately can't take pictures while filming which is very handy but can grab a still from the video if needed. The audio Jake doe get in the way of the tilt screen but I knew that going into it. The BIG screen is awesome, trying to get use to not having the view finder. Its compact size is incredible and look forward to doing a lot of projects with this!

Amazing video camera, capable photo camera.

Posted by Daniel Reid on March 19, 2026

The image from this camera is beautiful. R3DNE is really really a joy to work with. It's a capable photo camera if you mind no EVF. No mechanical shutter is no problem for photos with this little guy. The screen.... everyone talks about the screen, because they set the new standard with the ZR. It's truly a joy to use. There is a current issue with h.265 being *soft*, but this can be fixed with firmware which is good news. We have no timeline on when that fix is coming though.

    Love Love Love

This camera is amazing, I love the weight and build of the camera. The amount of value for the price is insane. I've filmed some content recently for a client and they are loving the new look.

Phenomenal Value, Beautiful image, Unmanageable files sizes in R3D

Posted by Christopher Roberts on February 24, 2026

This an absolutely great camera and it produces an exceptional image. But Nikon you need to do something about the Raw file sizes. R3D offer a few options for compression rates and considering this camera is delivering Raw in 12-but there is absolutely no reason for the files to be so massive. Honestly it prevents me from using the camera to its true potential on any larger projects. Which is where I really need it. Especially with where the state if memory is with AI gobbling it up. Creator just can't handle these massive file sizes.

    Great buy

Love the camera. Cons are much the same as everyone else. While I love the size, having an optional external casing without needing to buy a cage to offer better grip would be nice. Having the ability to connect to an outside storage capture as well a dual slots would be great (I've heard it's in the making and files can be huge). As for micro HDMI I think going with this it should automatically come with some form of locking mechanism preventing damage. Also not sure how...... but where the ports are, interferes with the screen when viewed on the side of the camera. All this said...... incredible idea for a camera and love it. It can be point and shoot right out of the box. But to get it to where it's more functional won't be. For the price point you can't go wrong.

    Great

Posted by James Spathis on January 5, 2026

I think this is one of the best Cameras released as of late, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, I just wish there was more first party Nike on lenses for cinema released with this camera that is cinema based, something a little bit better than third-party competitors, but still affordable Cina anamorphic lens from Nikon for the z mount

So close to perfect, and yet a few features short.

Posted by Nicholas Blair on January 5, 2026

As a working professional in both weddings, and corporate photo video, this camera is NEARLY a godsend. Let me explain:I currently own the Z8, Z6iii, ZF and now the ZR. I love this brand, and I love how images are captured on Nikon. I have used many systems, (Sony, Fuji x and GFX, Leica, and Canon) and truly find Nikon to be the cream of the crop or, nearly so. The ZR, while certainly an entry level video camera product (based on its price point) does punch above its weight class, yet faults to finish in a few key areas. I feel some of these are intentional, to learn room for future "Z Cinema" products (which is fine) and some of these are bizarre omissions that should be addressed in firmware. Nikon - PLEASE give us more RED cinema tools. You have a real chance to swing hard at the completion. This camera is begging for - False color, improved waveforms, edge focus, RED traffic lights, anamorphic de-squeeze, and open gate. These features would truly propel this product to a new height. I want more Z Cinema cameras; WE the creators and small businesses want better! please. a Z8 - R cinema camera would be incredible with the above mentioned features, and XLR audio support, with improved IBIS, and fans! Please do not let this be the only attempt you make at true cinema / videography tools. This needs to be the first chapter in the book, not a short story of what could have been.
