ZR

I am a Nikon shooter and have been for about twenty years. The eco / menu system is very comfortable for me, especially the four user modes, when paired with the Z8's similar four shooting banks with very similar architecture for consistency in setup. And when paired with my Z8 this is a great backup body and street photo / video camera i keep with me all the time with a 24-50 and 24-120 in a Nomatic 8L messenger bag.

Love the ZR. Purchased as a travel camera to complement my Z8. Love the size. It takes great photos. Having the Red codecs is great. They do take up a lot of storage and still getting used to editing them. Would definitely recommend. While I miss the EVF of the Z8, I still love the camera for taking photos.

I bought this mostly for video. I am shooting hour and a half long indoor events with audience, live band, and presenters/speakers, using multiple cameras in an almost concert-like environment, lots of brights and darks and colors, and want the video to look bright and crisp. I don't usually have a helper, so can't adjust the cameras in real time -- most changes happen in post. And, I don't have lots of time to edit individual camera angles in post. For this environment and workflow, I can't beat Nikon's SDR video capabilities to produce a starting point for tweaking in post -- which is all I have time to do. I experimented with shooting in NLog, and can make good looking videos for a different look if needed, but for recreating the feel of the actual event, I can't beat what the camera puts out in SDR using manual mode with auto-ISO and matrix metering, and just drawing down shadows and adjusting highlights in post. For my environment and turn around times, shooting video in Raw isn't really an option, so I am using the 10 bit H265. I love the ability to wirelessly synchronize the cameras' shutter release buttons and use that to start and stop video. I wish the on-off mechanism was a switch rather than a button, as I worry about it getting turned on accidentally when packed. Solution is to transport with batteries out, but think a rotated switch would be better. I wish there were more options to improve audio in-camera in large rooms with lots of echo. I recently shot with the ZRs and had a Sony Handycam trained on a particular part of the scene. I used two ZRs, one with internal microphones and one with a Rode Stereo VideoMic, and didn't have access to the sound board audio. The ZRs faithfully recorded the noisy, echo-and-reverb filled room, while the HandyCam somehow processed the audio in-camera to result in less echo and reverb. Without the ability to blend in audio from the sound board, I ended up using the HandyCam audio (and I have tried varying the ZR internal mic options). I also own a Z6III and a Z9. The video output in 10 Bit SDR mode is almost indistinguishable visually from these three camera types in my environment. For my situation, that is great. Still, I can't say that the ZR is giving me -- for my current use case -- a significant video edge over what the Z6III gives at a similar price-point, other than the internal 32 bit float audio. But, for me, that 32 bit internal float is important. My environment can be noisy and full of reverb, as I mentioned, and loud. I combine the internal audio with audio from a sound board to give a fuller, more balanced sound, so it is important to be able to capture the audio without it being clipped. Having that onboard is great.

A brilliant, magical, and perhaps the best camera I've ever used to date. First Nikon I ever owned nad it feels like the light in my eyes has been restored when it comes to photography and my one of my newer passions this is built for CINEMA. All of the times I had struggling to get melanated skin tones correct? Gone. The itch to changeand tweak colorgrades into oblivion? Null and void.Before I even get to the R3D in this camera it's incredible. Between the Imaging Cloud to improve the REC 709 and with NRAW I would say this camera already has my heart.Can't wait to see what this thing inspires me to create beyond my paid work in content.

Pros: See other reviews.Cons: I shoot stills more than video, so I'm waiting for the viewfinder accessory to be available. Yes, I know there are workarounds for that but they are awkward.Flipping the screen with ports in use is impossible.Micro HDMI out.

Photo enthusiast from Canada. Use ZR for run-and-gun fun. Mostly I like the ZR's: light weight, 4" screen on high brightness in sunlight, N-RAW Normal, photo mode, fast auto-focus, reference manual, and bang for the buck.Not a fan of: poor availability and high cost of recommended battery charger/adapter & cable, very high cost of CFexpress Type B cards, small hard to see icons, ease of removing memory cards.

I bought the ZR for vacation photography and videos. An amazing camera. Fast boot up. The menu system is amazing worth buying for that alone. Things like color temp are quick to change. Large bright screen works great in bright sunlight. I own a Red Scarlet and this is an amazing addition.
