The Nikon ZR - the Perfect Camera for Me
The ZR is PERFECT for my needs! I am a bit biased as I’ve been a Nikon shooter since the late-70s and have invested in Nikkor lenses since then. I purchased the Z6 bacon in early 2019 for creating content and still use it, today. My biggest Complaint was the Autofocus, I’m dark complected, and would have to shoot talking heads several times (run and gun vlogs). Then there was the built-in codec, H.264, and attaching an external monitor was not an option, so color grading was limiting. I almost purchased the Z6III as it was On Sale, but saw the ZR Press release and Pre-ordered.After vlogging with it for 3 weeks, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed shooting the multiple codecs, the articulating 4” screen, built-in 32-bit float, design/ergonomics, ease of use, including the 4 user-definable shooting modes. The Autofocus works great in almost all lighting conditions, I have yet to miss focus. Although the RAW files are large, the low price of this camera allowed me to upgrade my computing environment to compensate. Albeit, it’s only been a few weeks of using the ZR, but it instills confidence when vlogging and producing content. BTW, the FTZ adapter works just flawlessly with all my Nikkor F-Mount lenses, as expected. On my wishlist for the ZR would be: 1) Improved Stabilization, 2) Implementation of the EL Zone system for better video exposure accuracy. Open Gate and Anamorphic Desqueeze, but not at the cost of Improved Stabilization. Again, my use case is for run and gun video without the need to “rig out” my camera and draw attention to me.
