Much more than a beginner camera! Surprisingly excellent.

Posted by Stephen King on February 15, 2026

Bought it and the 2 lens kit as a stopgap replacing a damaged D500 and to get more video capability. Performance-wise, it exceeds the D500! Focus and exposure with the kit lenses and f mount lenses with the FTZ II adapter is amazing. Video capability at 4k@30fps or 4k cropped @60fps, and overall results, is superior to my DSLRs. This is far from what I think of as a "beginner camera"! Pre-capture release, and a processor that can handle it, allows me to get shots that were impossible with DSLRs. Up to 30fps with jpegs is a revelation for bird and sports photos. The 20mb "crop" sensor provides the same resolution as my D500, and allows for superb images. The 16-50 and 50-250 lenses are outstanding for the price, with great VR that compensates for their optical slowness. A small bag with the body and the lenses is almost weightless, a revelation on long hikes. What could be better? Battery life is short, abysmally so for video. In body recharging is frustrating and finicky about what charger it will accept, and the battery life readout is unreliable dropping to zero very quickly. The electric viewfinder is only acceptable, with stutter in some situations. I find myself using the led display more than I thought I would, and it works great, even outside in sunlight. Not having a top plate led readout for basic settings is taking some getting used to. IBIS would be nice for video, but the electronic stabilization helps in its absence, and the crop effect is not too severe. A second card slot for overflow primarily, especially considering how much data vids produce, would be nice. In sum, my only real complaint is that Nikon doesn't make a D500 pro level replacement using the Z50 as a starting point!

Great camera but a bit complicated and I wish Nikon had more support videos and more free ones!

Posted by Brett Kaplan Kaplan on January 24, 2026

I bought this camera at B & H in person and then bought (online) the Nikon set up video--this was helpful but I would love more clear videos about how to use the camera. I found some non-Nikon how tos online but they were too technical and led me down a confusing rabbit hole--I changed the photos to "raw," following that advice, but then could not upload them to my computer without the Nikon studio which was then a bit of a process to get logged into because it's a separate Nikon ID from the registration ID. So, in short, once I figured out all of that, the camera is great! I've taken some awesome photos, but I do wish there was a more streamlined way to learn and really make use of all its complicated bells and whistles. I miss my Nikon FM2 film camera from like 30 years ago. But all digital cameras have the same extended menus and so I guess I need to get with the times.

I wanted to step up my game in photographing wildlife and outdoors. This camera is amazing! It's easy to use in any setting and has a touch screen for ease. I couldn't be happier with this camera.

    My New Walkaround/Backup Camera

Posted by Harvey Duze on October 25, 2025

Was looking for a lightweight walkaround camera system which also could serve as a backup to my Z6III and Z8. The Z50II fits the bill perfectly, both in incredible image quality, matching the both my larger cameras in a smaller, lighter package. In addition to the three DX lenses I purchased for this camera, I love that the larger FX lenses and the two teleconverters I have for the larger cameras are fully compatible with no loss of quality. While the Z50II doesn't have all the bells and whistles that my Z6III and Z8 have, the batteries tend to run out quicker, it still earns 5-stars and is a great addition to my camera bag.

    Lightweight Powerhouse.

Posted by Daniel Lux on October 17, 2025

My wife and I have shared this camera for about two months and we absolutely love it. She has a Z6iii and I have a Z8 so we got the Z50ii as a back up camera for either of us to use. I've used it for a variety of subjects and I'm very impressed with the autofocus capability. While it lacks some of the options of its big brothers and sisters, it is still very impressive. The size and weight are a real benefit though I must admit it's a little small for my big hands. I've used it with the FTZ converter and a 300mm pf lens, giving me the full frame equivalent of 450mm, an amazing light weight wildlife combination.

    One happy owner!

Posted by Ryan N. on September 25, 2025

Amazing camera. Loved it since I bought it. I already have a Nikon Z5 that I use for shooting clients. But I wanted Z50ii because I love having a crop sensor camera and all things that they can do. I use to own the D7100,D7200 and most recently the D7500. Nikon does an awesome job with the crop sensor lineup.I'm really enjoying the Picture Control features. There is no limit to the creativity you can have with this camera. Also lets talk about the ergonomics. The Z50ii is lightweight, feels great in your hand and the Z lenses are lighter than the F Mount. This is important if you plan on holding your camera for hours at a time. Why are you still reading this? Make that purchase and don't look back!
