Z fc

This was an anniversary present to my wife, but I couldn’t help picking it up and testing it out. For both of us, this was our first experience with a non-mirrored camera. To me this camera is an elegant blend of the best of analog dials and digital precision. The quality of the photos are vastly superior to her previous Nikon D3100. It is lightweight with an EVF that is bright and accurate. But the fully articulating view screen almost makes the EVF jealous from lack of attention! Autofocus snaps to attention with a quick sense of capture usually reserved for the larger DSLRs. The silver lens (16-50 mm) is as sharp and crisp as you will find on a kit lens. One caveat was that in full sun the view screen was not as bright as could be, but could be adjusted.To quote my wife “It is a tactile joy to hold. The dials give you a sense of control that has been absent in previous cameras.” This is a camera you will carry with you everywhere. It is clear that Nikon has designed a little gem of a camera, one that will be taken seriously for many years to come.

I am the first time buyer of a Nikon camera and one that was digital too. I love the feel of the camera body, the styling and camera controls for ease of use. The menu system, although new to me, is laid out well and simply ordered to understand. I shoot most stills, street photography, but like the eye detect for both people and animals. The colors are grand, not too much saturated colors, and sharp. Did I mention sharp, as the resolution of the sensor is matched to the kit 16-50mm lens. It’s cool and very practical for street and scene photography.

I bought this camera for its classy retro look, but the performance of the Zfc does not disappoint either. I own a Z7 full frame camera and I can say that the Dfc is a very capable offer with very similar functionalities. In fact, The new fully articulating screen is a major upgrade from the Z7. When paired with a native lens like the 35mm F1.8 S, one could achieve fast AF performance and very high image quality despite of the lower resolution, cropped sensor. The mechanical dials are a joy to use, and I love the feeling of holding the Dfc body in my hand.....it brings back old memories of shooting film SLR cameras. One thing I would like to see is additional Film Mode simulations under Picture Control. This feature would provide further differentiation from other Z cameras, especially the Z50. If you are looking for good ergonomics and ultimate image quality, you should skip to a Z6 or Z7. But the Zfc is a very unique camera that simply inspires creativity. Well done, Nikon!
