A very well designed full frame mirrorless camera

Posted by Helen on October 18, 2019

Before buying this Z7, my husband and I did our homework reading reports and critics as much as we could get. Once we got it, we spent a whole week testing and comparing in addition to learning. We concluded that Z7 is every bit as we have come to expect from Nikon, quality-wise. Two things that particularly delight me are its lighter weight and the image stabilization, for I no longer have the strength of my youth.

I have been very pleasantly surprised with this camera. I have not had one single bad picture come out of it. It´s lightweight very convenient and very very easy to use.So far I have taken it on one lighthouse tour on a boat and use it in Foggy conditions on a bouncing boat and had excellent photos

    Outstanding performance

Posted by TimD on October 18, 2019

I bought this camera as a smaller camera to take on vacations. Spent two weeks in Ireland in May and the N7 performed great in every situation. Night photos were crisp and had great color saturation. Interior shots under different lighting were excellent even at higher ISO´s.
I´ve used the Z7 for sports and the results were great especially under poor lighting when using the camera for star trails in Yosemite the sensor sensitivity was much better than I expected and significantly outperformed my D750 which did a great job.
    Outstanding camera!

    Great Output

Posted by JohnS on October 17, 2019

Well I have had this camera for a year now. I think that the upgrade to the firmware made it useable. I will say if I have to get the shot I still reach for the D850 or the D5. The lack of two slots means it will not be used on any important event shoot. I also will use the D850 to capture a few shots on portrait shoots. The focus if you use it as the D850 on pinpoint s fine but if the subject is moving it is not always going to get the focus. I usually hit 95 percent with my other bodies and this one is about 80 percent. That said I love the lens and will wait for the next generation and hope it is closer to what we have come to expect. The best part of this camera is the output. I love the histogram in the viewfinder as well using it with continuous lighting. It is a bit more difficult workflow than the sony but the output is great. That really is all that matters. I will say if Nikon can not make the next generation equal to Sony they might have a serious exodus.

    Why a Z7

    Posted by Nikonloversince1967 on October 17, 2019

Wow, where to begin, focusing is way better than any other camera i have owned, Low light This camera hardly needs a flash. The camera´s operating system makes putting everything together effortless. I love that all my lenses work with the camera and seem to have madE them sharper and distortion free. I have found that i really do not need to do much post shoot adjustments, like sharpening or major color adjustments before printing my work. Also doing larger prints of a cropped area the images come out great, with out blown out areas or loss of detail.

Every lease is a thing of beauty but could use the full 2.8 line asap.

    Good Camera, terrible price

Posted by iwishikeptmyleica on October 17, 2019

Don´t get me wrong I do like the camera, the menu is great, build quality is awesome, features all good... I just that I paid way too much for it as right after I received it they started offering the adapter, few months later they lowered the price dramatically. Doesn´t sound like a good deal anymore. Also please release lenses faster.

EVF has not worked right since day 1

Posted by Bryce on October 17, 2019

I do love taking pictures with this camera. That said their have been problems with the electronic view finder since I got it. It gets stuck and will not switch away from the EVF when I take my face away from the camera. For a while if I blew on the EVF to try to clear any dust away from the sensor that tells the camera if you are looking through the EVF or not it would eventually switch the display from the EVF to the back screen where it should be, but now it is completely stuck and the back screen won´dt come on at all. It´s a complete pain in the neck. I also have a Z6 and now it is doing the exact same thing.

Great image quality in a tiny package

Posted by SparkyMG on October 17, 2019

    I have a D850 and a Z7.

The Z7 is much smaller and is now always the first choice for field work or walking around. I have a few premium lenses without VR and the Z7 helps for that kind of shooting. Your slowest usable shutter speed is at least 2 stops lower than a D850 because of the Z7´s in camera image stabilization. That translates into shooting at ISO 200 instead of 400 or 800 if you want to.

I use the D850 when I need to carefully compose and control the image or subject - or or work in a studio - because I love he way the viewing system looks. I cannot tell if there are any image quality differences between the two models.

Both the D850 and the Z7 are a departure in terms of image quality from cameras that came before...very good tonal transitions and range, better, cleaner blacks and shadows compared to the prior 800 series, unsurpassed detail rendition for the FX format. I still look through the viewfinder and have not acclimated to live view - and to my surprise the Z7 viewfinder is very workable for manual focus. I hear good things about some of the S lenses.
