Excellent @ Most, Lacking in Some
Posted by JohnK007 on October 20, 2019
As a very-experienced, Emler wildlife photographer, I have the best cameras Nikon makes as of this writing (D5, D850, D500). For action, the Z7 simply does not compare to any of these, on any level.
The OVF of DSLRs is superior for rapid-fire shooting to the EVF of mirrorless cameras.
However, my main profession is a casualty investigator. In this capacity, of photographing loss locations, vehicle damage, construction damage, etc. the Z7 Z 24-70 f/2.8 S lens is the only kit I bring for this endeavor. I will add to this the Z 14-24 f/2.8 S, the moment it comes out.
For pure landscape photography, I prefer the D850 Zeiss glass. There is no substitute.
For macro photography, however, as well as for portrait photography, it is in these two elements within Z7 truly shines. In this capacity, the EVF is superior to OVF. For example, with the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5x - 5x, I cannot even see through the viewfinder with an OVF, in either the D500 or D850 ... yet the EVF of the Z7 illuminates tiny subjects so that I can see and photograph them with an off-shoe flash.
For portrait photography, the focus-peaking allows me to nail shots with precision focus, and the IBIS allows for hand-holding while achieving this objective. With Nikon´s finest portraiture glass (105/1.4, 58/1.4, and 28/1.4), the focus-peaking plus IBIS of the Z7 eclipse anything possible while hand-holding with DSLR´s.
I do not subscribe to the ´´DSLRs are dead´´ mantra. To me this is a statement made by zealots, part-timers, and those without the finest wildlife glass available. However, as someone who has the ability to afford Nikon´s best, there are certain circumstances (as described above) were mirrorless cameras offer advantages.
To those with the experience, there still remain many instances, however, were DSLRs continue to provide their own advantages. I absolutely love my Nikon Z7. However, and having Nikon´s other finest cameras available, I am able to fairly assess the Z7 for what it is, as well as what it is not.
Therefore, as with anything, selecting the right tool for the job is critical.
For macro, for midrange still photo, and for portraiture, the Z7 is my go-to option. -

Z compared to D850
Posted by Keep on October 20, 2019
I have owned and used D300, D810 and D850 and got the Z as soon as it shipped. So far I have the 24-70 f4, 85 f1.8 and adapt all my other lenses. Upgrade fixed my initial focus issues- great now, but my experience is limited to less than 125mm. I love the lightweight and ease in transition from D850 menus. I have bifocals but viewfinder isn´t a problem (a bit of a surprise). Very low noise at iso 6400 - hard to tell the difference from my D850.I am very pleased, so far.

Wonderful
Posted by worldphotos on October 20, 2019
There´s a lot to love about this camera and its new lens family. It´s light. Its dynamic range and capture accuracy are wonderful. Its ergonomics are familiar and intuitive. Its physical and software versatility are terrific. Its on-board wireless capability is great. Its new lens family takes Nikon glass to another height. I´d only hope for a few options and changes: 1) Faster and more accurate focus, and 2) The more universal mini USB port on the camera side.

Exactly what I was looking for - a great start to a new system
Posted by RobIke on October 20, 2019
Nikon´s Z7 isn´t perfect, but it´s what I was hoping for and a good indicator of an excellent new mount and system. Previously I had a Nikon D750, shot fairly extensively on a D800 and used mirrorless Panasonic Micro 4/3rds cameras as my day-to-day cameras, documenting construction progress on our engineering projects. I was hoping to get a high resolution, full frame camera with a smaller, lighter body than the D800, and the WISIWYG views of my mirrorless cameras. Nikon´s first entry into full frame mirrorless is impressive and getting better with firmware upgrades (please keep them coming).

Great Camera!
Posted by Jorge57 on October 19, 2019
I use my camera for family events, wedding, baptisms and other occasions when the shutter noise can be disturbing with an SLR. I can now shoot as many frames as I want and not disturb. Fantastic!
Image quality is great. The electronic view finder makes it difficult to take a bad photo. You know immediately if your photo is going to be good, and if not you can make immediate corrections in exposure.
Very compatible with all my old Nikon lenses. The adapter makes a solid connection. Autofocus speed does not seem affected by the adapter. Great camera!
Have also used it for filming indoor video with excellent results! -

Love this camera!
Posted by YellowBelt on October 19, 2019
The Nikon Z7 is more camera than I am photographer. As a new DSLR user, the learning curve was steep, but worth the effort. The Z7 allows me to experiment with my photos in ways I would not have imagined before I bought it.
Complaints: Tutorials need to explain when, why and how to use the different functions. The same goes for buying lenses. -

Z7 - Lightweight fun
Posted by Systems on October 19, 2019
I have a Z7 and D850. I decided to use the Z7 with the new 24-70Z 2.8 and 14-24Z 4.0 and the 850 with my long lenses 100MM and up.
I love the weight of the Z7, the interface is easy to use and the resulting photos for the most part are what I expect. I use the Z mostly when I hike or travel. I have run into situations that concern me with the Z that won´t allow me to give it 5 stars.
First - If I shoot 5 frames in a row using Snapbridge. the Photos exposures will be inconsistent. No changes to the settings, Just Shoot 5 in a row in a 30 second period and the lighting in the photo comes out different., cant explain it.
Second - Depth of field Preview - Nothing like I am used to on the 850. On the Z it is inconsistent and not reliable.
Yes I have all the latest updates. I had hoped this was something to fixed and that the updates would do that. So far... No go
I still would not give up the camera. Light weight, feels good. Aftermarket brackets for my tripod are great and cheap. Sensor delivers even IF I can´t tell when I take the shot. -
