Lens Compatibility Issue
Posted by TimRF on December 7, 2018
The camera is great. Just what you would expect. However, I have 8 fast (2.8) Nikon lens. They all work with the FTZ adapter. But NONE of them will auto focus. They work fine with my old D7000. The DX lens that came with the D7000 will auto focus on the Z7 but not the older lens. Not sure how Nikon can advertise old lens work.. it should be more like they partially work.. Going to try and send the camera back but since I opened and used it, I have my doubts. Old guys beware!

Mirrorless I Love It
Posted by martythephotog on November 16, 2018
I am a Nikon Pro (NPS). This is my first mirrorless camera and it has the same chip as my Nikon D850 has and the quality could not be better. The camera is so light firstly, and the view finder is so bright and exact. The Nikon Z7 does not have everything as my Nikon D850 has, but like my Nikon D850, the Nikon Z7 has more than I will ever use.
This Nikon Z7 Kit is amazing. It comes with a zoom lenses and an adaptor where I can use my other Nikon lenses.
The only thing I wish is that the lenses in the kit was a 2.8
I am a still product photographer and used this lightweight Nikon Z7 on location and is was so sweet !!! I also lit and shot a video in studio with the Z7 and had amazing results.
This camera is great !!! -

OK, so there is the one card slot issue....
Posted by JSSDallas on November 9, 2018
....... get over it or this camera is not for you.
I would rate the Z7 a 4.5 if that were possible: we really do need a second slot on future bodies.
If I just say ´´It´s a Nikon´´, there really isn´t much more to say. The D850 is still my choice for action shooting but the Z7 and the D850 together are a marriage made in heaven. One small thing that I´m really, really, really hoping that Nikon fixes is that on the D850, you could program the joystick to serve up a pre-selected wide focus pattern. Having that and single spot on the back button is fantastic for sports or other action because you can instantly cycle between them. Otherwise, the Z7 is a brilliant first entry to the mirrorless world for Nikon.
Heads up, Sony. Your free ride is over. -

A work of engineering art!
Posted by CMPL on November 7, 2018
Just started my experience with the Z7. This is a fantastic piece of equipment! Beautifully crafted, light weight and ergonomically correct. Most importantly, the quality of the photos is unbelievable, so crisp and detailed. Be aware that you will probably have difficulty transferring RAW files to your PC or laptop as most of the current software´s are not updated to process these files yet. I found that Adobe Lightroom cc is equipped to handle RAW files. I´m looking forward to seeing all that this camera can do!

Loving the Z7!
Posted by Gene on November 7, 2018
I´ve been waiting for years for this camera as I work in the film and television industry as a still photographer and we need silent cameras on set to keep the actors and sound mixers happy. Thanks to NPS, I got my Z7 soon after its release. I bought two new Nikon lenses as well as I felt I needed to update.
I was anxious to get it on set to see how good it actually is, and to date I´ve been extremely happy and found having the Z7 has even re-energized my excitement for shooting. As noted on other reviews here, the auto-focus settings miss sometimes, but that could be partial user error as well. The show´s camera crew and even some actors have asked about my new Nikon and I´ve been happy to talk about it.
I´m using my D800 still daily but so far my Fuji mirrorless has stayed in my Domke bag. I´ve used Nikon´s ViewNX and Photoshop for years and have continued to use that combination now. But, I´ve noticed some delays while going through the RAW images with the updated Nikon ViewNXi.
I also shoot underwater in caves and wrecks and use my D800 for that in an underwater housing. If one comes out for the Z7, I´ll probably get that and start taking it underwater too. Prior to working on film productions, I was a photojournalist and fine art photographer. I´ve also taught at the college level.
I´ve been using Nikon cameras since the mid 1970s, borrowing my father´s equipment when I was a teen. -

limited compatibility
Posted by robirdman on November 6, 2018
My biggest disappointment was find that only 3 of 9 Nikon AF lens would autofocus. Those with an aperture ring will not. Then I thought my SB910 and SB800 flashes wouldn´t fire at all. But then I found they would but only in green auto mode. Further research showed that they would fire in other modes (R,A,S,M) as long as extended hi-speed mode was not set. The short life of the battery was a problem also, as 3 times I was out shooting, I had to stop because it was done. One definitely needs a 2nd or 3rd backup. Yet strangely, tough my D3 and D4 battery chargers have 2 chambers, the D7´s only has one! The good news, it that, once the right choices are made for the shooting situation, the autofocus and tracking are very good, following flying birds, one of my main subjects. The video also tracks well and the quality of shots and video is outstanding. I will have to upgrade Photoshop CS6 to subscription, unfortunately to view RAW images. The Nikon ViewNX-i allows me to see them, but the incredible slowness and inability work efficiently as I do with Bridge necessitates this. The ability to see exactly what the results of what you are shooting (unless flash is used) with the electronic viewfinder, instead of a mirror, is a huge plus, and using silent mode if I am in a blind or shooting wary animals is a great feature. A negative though is that when the viewfinder shuts off, it may take more than a 2nd to wake up, and I have missed several shots, coming across a perched bird, that was gone by the time I got the viewfinder awake to find the subject.

Very nice camera.

The Z7 is perfect for using as my carry everyday camera and hiking. Feels like a Nikon, very important as others had parts that were to small for my hands. IQ is very good and love the features.

Great Camera! Easy to use!
Posted by GrahamImages on November 5, 2018
I´ve owned the Z7 and 24-70S since release date, just over a month now.
I love it.
I´ve been a Nikon user of 20 years. It feels just like any other Nikon, with the added mirrorless benefits. I use the camera on a daily basis, photography is my sole source of income. It did take me a bit to adjust to the digital interface... but now that I have it´s great.
The WYSIWYG feature within the viewfinder is fantastic, no more test shots.
The IBIS is awesome. I´ve handheld photos at 1 second with my 14-24mm on the FTZ. I´m really looking forward to testing the limits and seeing how long I can hand hold the 14-24mm or the 24-70S. I love playing with a long shutter for my cityscapes or architecture images.
IQ is great. I love the feature of cutting the RAW file in half when I´m doing event/sport/personal work.
From shooting full day events throughout the years I have several back up batteries. I have had to make sure I keep them charged, more often than I did before. Battery life is as expected though, I´m happy with it.
Love it! -

Great camera, but not for every purpose.
Posted by JMLobert on November 5, 2018
Let me start by pointing out that I specialize in night photography, which pushes many limits and for which many features considered to be minor suddenly become over-ridingly important, these are not typical and may not matter at all for many daytime photography purposes.
The Z7 is a brilliant incarnation of the full-frame mirrorless concept and even though in its first Nikon generation, it matches or beats competing choices in their third generation. The camera is solid and looks and feels like a real Nikon camera. The button layout is more compact than what we are used to, but perfectly usable in darkness. Image quality is on par with the D850, as it is a very similar sensor design.
What made me return my Z7 is for three main reasons:
1) The LCD screen does not show as many stars or details at night as the D850 or D750 do, which means that it is substantially more difficult to focus on stars or on really dark points. I don´t understand why that is the case, as it is a translation of the sensor signal to an LCD screen, which should theoretically be the same as in any DSLR.
2) When switching between F and Z lenses (which mostly everyone will be doing for some time), the FTZ lens adapter does not allow to have two standard Arca-Swiss compatible mounting plates installed. The adapter is so tightly designed (and so long) that one needs to mount the tripod plates after the adapter is attached or detached. There will surely be slim tripod mounting plates to address this in the future, but for now, this is a disabling problem when working in complete darkness. And annoying at best even in bright daylight.
3) The EVF is surprisingly bright and I was pleased that it offers brightness control to not blind the photographer at night. However, in extremely dark locations (think: Milky Way photography), it turns into a black, noisy screen. This is expected and a limitation of all mirrorless cameras, but it does not allow to compose through viewfinder (or LCD). Even in the darkest locations, an optical view finder still allows the photographer to see some of the scenery.
Some other aspects added to my decision, although they are more of a disappointment than a main reasons for my return.
a) A lack of button illumination. These were introduced in the D4 and provided for the D5, D850 and D500, why not make that a distinguishing feature for all pro(sumer) cameras? It is a very useful feature for night photography.
b) The lack of a fully or at least partially articulating LCD monitor. Does nobody at Nikon take low angle vertical photos? The consumer level cameras D5500 have it, why not the more expensive cameras??
c) And finally one feature where I do not understand why Nikon is so resistant to provide it: exposure times of 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. These are simply a few text entries in a firmware lookup table. There is no reason not to provide these, especially given that night and ND filter long exposure photography is becoming increasingly popular. Competitors can do this, why not Nikon?
The Z7 is a wonderful camera for many applications and I like its low weight, small size, excellent ergonomics, but it is a step back for night photography, compared to the D850, or even D750.
