    Excellent

Posted by Zombiemaster on August 19, 2019

Caveat: I waited until Version 2.0 firmware before purchasing so this review is based on that experience.

Pros: Is a great portrait camera, nice one-handed controls, great ergonomics, nice image resolution, a solid event camera. FTZ adapter works great with legacy glass, and the new Z glass seems to be worth the upgrade(s), lighter weight, battery life covers a full day of shooting for me, image quality is superb. Eye also works very well. It just feels like a Nikon and the touch menus are very nice.

Neutral: 1 XQD card slot (2 slots would´ve been nice but XQD is very robust, but really isn´t needed). Frame rate with tracking is slower than my D500 when shooting sports / wildlife.

Cons: I like to hold the camera by the left side when changing a lens and I would´ve liked a little more to hold on to, the FTZ adapter gets in the way of some arca-swiss mounts. Thankfully both issues are solved with a Kirk L-Bracket for the Z6 / Z7

Conclusion: A great first foray into mirrorless, definitely worth the investment if you have previous Nikon gear and a solid choice if you are starting new.

Easy Transition from other Nikon Cameras

Posted by JimWood on August 8, 2019

This was a quick transition from my other Nikon cameras. The controls are easy to get used to. I like how quick it is to change settings using the ´´I´´ button and looking at the LCD. The camera is lighter and great for hiking. It´s easy to hold. Colors are amazing. The one issue is in camera focus stacking. It gives me too many photos at the infinity end that are out of focus. It´s easier to control the focus point myself except the new lenses don´t have the scales on them. Overall it´s a great camera that Nikon has created.

    Nikon Z7

Posted by Manny on July 24, 2019

I absolutely love this camera. It´s the first to get me to give up my D300 which I also love dearly. My one gripe is the lack of S lenses, especially an 18-300mm lens for when I want an all around lens. I didn´t ding the rating because it´s so new and I know I need to be patient. Still, I wish it were onto current roadmap.

Mostly great but some backward steps

Posted by WSJoe on July 24, 2019

By way of background, I have owned a D200, D700, D800E, D7200 and a D500. I considered the Z 7 as an updated landscape camera, potentially replacing the D800E. The features which attracted me were primarily the smaller size, articulating screen, and improved focusing for static/slow subjects. (I have the D500 for faster moving subjects.)

Likes: The size, although it took some getting used to, as I kept pressing the function buttons unintentionally while just holding the camera. The 24-70 f/4 kit lens is quite good. Focus peaking is helpful. Pinpoint focus mode is very good, including at night. In-body stabilization is good, especially for my old AI-S lenses and my AF-S 300 f/4D. I have found a way to make the combination of the “I” menu and “My Menu” provide quick access to the menu items I most commonly use. I like that Nikon provided the FTZ adapter although one should have their act together when using it on a tripod. Electronic first curtain is nice. 45MP is plenty. It is enough that I can imagine using my DX lenses as a “traveling light” kit instead of the D7200. Image quality is very good. The camera is quiet. It is also responsive for a mirrorless (not as snappy as the D500).

Disappointments: Unlike the D800E, D7200, and D500, the Z 7 does not support blinking highlights per color channel (Nikon: Please add this to the next FW update). The external buttons are not lit, as they are on the D500. When using AI-S lenses, the f-stop is not displayed in the viewfinder, nor is the actual f-stop recorded in the metadata. Those three are significant steps backward in my workflow. I still worry about how exposed the sensor is when changing lenses. I work in all kinds of weather and I may still resort to a DSLR sometimes as the Z 7 sensor, being unprotected by the shutter curtain at power off, will more easily get rain or snow or dust directly deposited. Needing to send the camera to Nikon for a sensor clean (per Nikon) is a disincentive to use this in bad weather - odd since the body is quite well sealed otherwise. If the shutter was closed when power is turned off it would avoid snowflakes/rain/dust landing on the sensor during lens swaps.

Really great first full-frame mirrorless camera.

    Posted by mm1co on July 24, 2019

I got my Z7 on release day and have been very happy with it. The EVF is fantastic and is a real boon to people like me with bad near vision. When I use my D850 I can see through the viewfinder just fine because of the diopter adjustment, but I have to put on my reading glasses every time I want to review a photo on the back of the camera, or make menu changes. Very time consuming and annoying. With the Z7 I can do all that through the diopter corrected EVF.

There are many great things about the Z series, the EVF, in-body stabilization, Nikon ergonomics, etc. But perhaps the best thing of all is that Nikon has finally started releasing firmware updates for a camera system that go beyond bug fixes and add real, useful functionality to the camera. I really hope this continues and becomes the norm for every current and future Nikon camera.

I was reluctant at first - now I´m a big fan

Posted by scubacharlie on July 21, 2019

I watched and read all kinds of reviews for a year, then decided to buy when Nikon ran a promotion. I love this Z7 even with a few minor issues. First, it´s easy to learn how to use - especially if you watch a few ´´how to´´ videos. Resolution is absolutely phenomenal - hands down. View finder has all the information you need and even more. Battery life is exceptional. Lenses are truly awesome to the extent that I found the kit lens 2-70 F4 just as good as the f.8 so did not buy the 2.8. I may not even buy a telephoto lens because the resolution at 70 mm makes it a 200 mm image when cropped for 98% of what I need to do. Light and compact is important factor when hiking to take landscape images.
What the engineers at Nikon did on the adapter for using existing lenses was pure genius!
Nikon Z7 is on top of the stack in my opinion.
Negative issue is what has ha to my trade-in values on older equipment! LOL
Can´t wait to see what underwater housings will be available at what cost. But I don´t have to worry about lit rain with this camera eat for wilderness hiking.

I like it! almost love it

Posted by Johnurphotos on July 15, 2019

The things that I like about it: it´s very quiet, very small and lightweight when comparing it to my DSLR´s. I do like the feature that you get a preview of the actual exposure prior to taking the shot. I love the fact that it´s full frame in a small package. Like the low light capabilities, its descent. AF is pretty fast. Like the resolution.

Dislikes: 1 memory card slot, although not a big deal cause I plan to use this camera more for casual use than pro use. Not really impressed with the eye AF, sometimes it´s looking at weird things, like a shirt, which is fine considering I usually use the single point AF anyway. I feel dizzy after long use (gotta get used to the EVF, it´s like looking at a TV screen rather than a window, the lag from either my movement or the subject´s movement, although pretty good on the Z7, it´s still apparent enough for me that I´m not able to use it for a very long time yet, although not the fault of the camera, it´s just the fact that I will have to get used to it). Although it´s an esthetic of all mirrorless cameras, I kind of find it annoying that I have to dive into the menu when using a flash, to turn off the live exposure view.

All in all, I cant give it 5 stars but would give it a 4 and a half. Just a few things that I cant get over to fully have confidence in these cameras to totally replace my DSLR´s for pro use, but for casual use (family pictures, vacation photos, etc.) I think this camera is phenomenal.

Feeling the Love for the Z Series

Posted by SpringfieldVA on June 26, 2019

I have been using the Z6 since Nov 2018. It was a great addition to my Nikon arsenal. I shoot action and candid photos at Dog Shows and Canine field events, as well as non-Canine events. I also use the D500 and D750. All have met my needs for getting the Job done. The results from the Z6 in every task I put it to were outstanding and exceeded my expectations. With the recent deals on the Z7, I thought I would add that body to my tool chest. Traded in my D610 which was in the bag for back-up.
I have now been using the Z7 for about 4 weeks and am thrilled with the results. It is like a Z6 on steroids. Photos are bright, rich and sharp - I have used it with the 24-70 f4 S and the 200-500 f5.6 with the FTZ . And been pleased with the work. I immediately updated the firmware to 2.0 when I set up the Z7 so I can´t do a before/after comparison. But I do not question the Z7´s ability to focus on my photos subject. Both the Z6 and Z7 give me sharp photos in both daylight and low light conditions. I shot several concerts with the Z7 with the 70-200 f2.8 VR (version 1) and was thrilled. Looking forward to my future work with the Z7 and Z6.
