“I am a macro photographer and have experience with a number of other digital/film camera systems. Without any reservations, this is a gem. The D850 is clearly the best in resolution, ergonomics, battery life, weather seals, speed, durability, … and the list just goes on and on … did I say that it takes astounding beautiful photographs.

I have used and have extensive experience with the Nikon FM, FM2, FE, F2AS, D2020, D100, D200, D3, D600, D610, D7000, D800, and D810. The D850 is the most capable and advance camera I have used - it is a GEM of a camera! The only limitation of this camera is the photographer using the D850.

Enough said, if you´re a photographer and still not sure - Just hold this beast, it feels natural. This is a well thought out and very comfortable camera to use.

The D850 will not make you a better photographer, but you will have the best tool available to become better. I love this beast!

I am landscape photographer and owned several APS-C Nikon camera´s, the latest being the outstanding D7200. The question is should you upgrade, and why the D850? I am certain that if you are reading this you have ´´trolled´´ all the sites and blogs to get familiar with the in depth features this camera offers, so I will not cover this. Coming strictly from a landscape/travel photographer perspective and transitioning to full frame, here is what I see:
1) If you come from a D7100/D7200 the D850 multiple set up and customization screens are outstanding to customize your shooting. The menu´s mirror roughly 70% of these aforementioned APS-C cameras. If you are migrating from an introductory DSLR, your learning curve here is substantial. After all, this product is not targeted towards photographers just learning to use a DSLR.
2) Functionally, the camera is heavier to carry around for landscape work and you will notice the difference. But, certain shooting aspects with this camera make that less important. For instance, the touchscreen is a real pleasure; touch auto focus and/or actuation in live view, live histogram and ease to access menu´s are a significant plus to me. The upgraded live view screen for lower light viewing to focus and ability to see greater detail vs D7200 screen is of large value to me.
The Big Question...
2) People ask me if the resolution makes a difference in picture quality in the D850 vs D7200. Answer: The D850 sensor is impressive in a couple of different respects. The ability to crop in significantly and maintain picture resolution with this camera is beyond what I would have expected. There is plenty of technical speak to read, but bottom line its a ´´wow´´. The ability to recapture detail in post processing for landscape/travel photographers is a key feature in this camera. Again, the sophistication of the Nikon designed sensor shines here by recovering detail with minimal to no noise. This is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the D850. Not only can detail be pulled out in high contrast scenes but the end result is a photo that has surpassed what I could capture with my D7200.
There are so many more features to speak to especially if you shoot sports, wildlife or portraits. But if you are primarily a landscape photographer and seek the upgrades I spoke to, then the D850 is the investment for you. Thank you Nikon for this wonderful product on your 100th year Anniversary.

The 850 is a very unique product in that it can assist you with many different facets of shooting subjects both in term of focus but also lighting. I was on a day trip with my son´s youngest. a 5 year old and handed him the camera. He was able to easily align the view through the finder and take a wonderful photo of his mother,

Had to wait for a while to get my D850. Well worth the wait. Great addition to my equipment bag.

Great in low light and I love the tilt touchscreen for working with low camera positions. The focusing and metering is great in all lighting situations. It also makes focusing with some of my old manual lens, very easy. This camera will be hard to top.

The camera performed exceptionally well in all circumstances so far. Be prepared to spend several weeks learning all of its capabilities and idiosyncrasies. The very large number of available auto focus modes and exposure modes can be confusing. Even if you are an experienced Nikon photographer. But the increased resolution (and therefore, the ability to crop without losing visible resolution) makes the camera easy to use.
However, it is heavy and may not be usable with all your accessories. For example, I had a five year old third party flash unit which could only operated in the manual mode. Purchasing a third party flash solved that problem and all modes were available.

I went from a Nikon FE2 film camera unused in the drawer for about 10 years to a D810 for 2 years then to my D850. I´m so glad I did. All my original lenses still work plus I added some more. No regrets. It will do anything I want it to do... I just learned it has the capability built in for taking a focus stacking sequence! I have taken videos of events in my family´s life and really enjoy wildlife photography. Just buy one for yourself! Sample bird photo taken with the 200-500 mm zoom; buy that too!

Now that I have the D850 my D810 is my trusty backup for risky adventures. The D850 is full of subtle improvements that add up to a great leap forward!! I can´t wait to test it thoroughly this summer.

The D850 meets or exceeds all of the pre-release hype. It is a huge leap from my old D600 and provides me with tools that make the work I do easier and better.
