    ´´Nearly perfect´´ camera

Posted by WmMorton on June 18, 2018

I very much love this camera. The image quality is exceptional, and the ability to shoot at 46Mp and use a crop for a 25Mp image allows my 70-200 to work like a 105-300. The standard USB3 cable input is a huge improvement from the non-standard cable on my D750s. This camera is phenomenal in the studio. Outside the studio, the metering seems different, but I´m learning the differences and adjusting. The higher resolution really shows camera movement more easily. Not an issue on a tripod, but can be when shooting handheld in low light - even with a VR lens. The only major complaint is the inability to save settings like the U1/U2 I have on my D750s. Shooting an event, I cannot quickly transition from shooting the stage to shooting the crowd. I got used to simply being able to rotate a dial back and forth from U1 to U2 and vice versa. The settings banks are pretty useless - they don´t stick, and take too long to switch between anyways. I´d rate this camera a 4.9 for that reason. I may have to go back to the older D750s for events vs the two new D850s.

    So-so but nice sensor.

Posted by EventShooter on June 18, 2018

I shoot mostly events (mix with flash and without) and initially the D850 was very difficult to use with the new SB-5000 flash. The TTL mechanism shut the flash down so much that it was very difficult to get well lit photos. Eventually I had to turn the flash TTL off and just use it manually. As opposed to the D810 and SB-910 that worked nearly perfectly every time. So nice in fact that I went back to it for most event shooting that requires flash. (Battery door on SB-5000 broke within the first 2 months of use).

The new sensor in the D850 is very nice, and sharp. But other than that, I think I like the D810 and SB-910 better for all the event shooting I do.

    Eons above everything else

I upgraded from a D300 to the D850 and OMG. The image quality, the focus speed, is just insane. I love everything about this camera.

    Nikon Gets It Right

Posted by Gznikon on June 18, 2018

This is the best camera. I have learned so much and can use Manual mode which is an achievement. My friends are so complimentary when they see my photos. I´ve had it for about four months and feel confident in the results.

    Outstanding camera!

I am exceptionally pleased with my D850. I have been shooting Nikon professional cameras since 1970 and this is by far the best camera I have owned.

    Worth the Hype

Posted by TimTorchiaPhoto on June 18, 2018

Been a Nikon owner for years and recently purchased the D850. I shoot mostly action and landscape and wanted the best of both worlds. This camera has done exactly that, especially with the grip to increase fps. The color that the raw files contain is unreal. The ISO is really good as well as the focusing system. I´m very pleased with the purchase and highly recommend this camera to whoever is ready to take their photography to the next level. Attached is a recent article I had published. The whole event was shot with a 70-200 and a 24-70.

Wonderful overall camera (Action, portrait, landscape, etc) but may require you to raise your game to fully realize its advantages

Posted by Bwcabob on June 18, 2018

I take a lot of images each year (40-50,000) , so for a number of months I resisted buying this camera with its large file sizes. But the images I saw from it were just too wonderful to ignore. Plus I shoot a lot of polo and other action with my 24 megapixel D750 where I am far from my subjects but buying those big heavy longer lenses is not for me. So even with Nikon´s 300mm f4 and a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter I am almost always cropping my shots. I finally gave in and doubled the megapixels I now have on my subjects. And I have never looked back. You´ll be amazed working with the image files and how much you can zoom into the image and the details are still crisp and crystal clear. I am smiling the whole time at the richness of the colors of dark horses on a bright day, plus being able to read even the smallest print on the tiniest details. However the incredible detail can be unforgiving and show some softness which you wouldn´t notice with lower resolution. But the outstanding results make the effort to raise your game more than worth it !!

    Outstanding Performance

    Posted by Veteran1 on June 18, 2018

I have been using Nikons for many years, the D850 is my absolute favorite! I have had the 800 and 810 and thought they had everything I needed, but the 850 proved me wrong. The new features of the 850 are all necessary to me. If I am shooting with the 70-200 and decide I need a little extra reach, I just switch to the DX mode and have more than enough pixels from the sweet part of the lens to capture a stunning image. If I am creating an image that requires exceptional sharpness I can go into Focus Stacking and it puts those images into their own folder for easy processing. Too many more favorite features of the D850 to list here. Thank you Nikon.

    Awesome

I am 71 years old and have been an avid film photographer for a long time with many high end film cameras/lenses. I avoided digital since I thought that film was much better; but I was wrong. I sold most of my film cameras to purchase the D850 and 3 lenses and I couldn´t be happier. At my age you would think I have patience; but I lost my patience waiting for the film to return and then finding out I idid not get the shot I expected. The D850 output is better than most film photos I have ever taken and I can more reliably get a great shot now.
    Well DONE Nikon!!!
