Wonderful overall camera (Action, portrait, landscape, etc) but may require you to raise your game to fully realize its advantages

Posted by Bwcabob on June 18, 2018

I take a lot of images each year (40-50,000) , so for a number of months I resisted buying this camera with its large file sizes. But the images I saw from it were just too wonderful to ignore. Plus I shoot a lot of polo and other action with my 24 megapixel D750 where I am far from my subjects but buying those big heavy longer lenses is not for me. So even with Nikon´s 300mm f4 and a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter I am almost always cropping my shots. I finally gave in and doubled the megapixels I now have on my subjects. And I have never looked back. You´ll be amazed working with the image files and how much you can zoom into the image and the details are still crisp and crystal clear. I am smiling the whole time at the richness of the colors of dark horses on a bright day, plus being able to read even the smallest print on the tiniest details. However the incredible detail can be unforgiving and show some softness which you wouldn´t notice with lower resolution. But the outstanding results make the effort to raise your game more than worth it !!

    Outstanding Performance

    Posted by Veteran1 on June 18, 2018

I have been using Nikons for many years, the D850 is my absolute favorite! I have had the 800 and 810 and thought they had everything I needed, but the 850 proved me wrong. The new features of the 850 are all necessary to me. If I am shooting with the 70-200 and decide I need a little extra reach, I just switch to the DX mode and have more than enough pixels from the sweet part of the lens to capture a stunning image. If I am creating an image that requires exceptional sharpness I can go into Focus Stacking and it puts those images into their own folder for easy processing. Too many more favorite features of the D850 to list here. Thank you Nikon.

    Awesome

Posted by Jimmy on June 18, 2018

I am 71 years old and have been an avid film photographer for a long time with many high end film cameras/lenses. I avoided digital since I thought that film was much better; but I was wrong. I sold most of my film cameras to purchase the D850 and 3 lenses and I couldn´t be happier. At my age you would think I have patience; but I lost my patience waiting for the film to return and then finding out I idid not get the shot I expected. The D850 output is better than most film photos I have ever taken and I can more reliably get a great shot now.
    Well DONE Nikon!!!

    A Gem Of A Camera

Posted by radar on June 18, 2018

“I am a macro photographer and have experience with a number of other digital/film camera systems. Without any reservations, this is a gem. The D850 is clearly the best in resolution, ergonomics, battery life, weather seals, speed, durability, … and the list just goes on and on … did I say that it takes astounding beautiful photographs.

I have used and have extensive experience with the Nikon FM, FM2, FE, F2AS, D2020, D100, D200, D3, D600, D610, D7000, D800, and D810. The D850 is the most capable and advance camera I have used - it is a GEM of a camera! The only limitation of this camera is the photographer using the D850.

Enough said, if you´re a photographer and still not sure - Just hold this beast, it feels natural. This is a well thought out and very comfortable camera to use.

The D850 will not make you a better photographer, but you will have the best tool available to become better. I love this beast!

Nikon pulled out all the stops...going from APS-C to Full Frame Sensor

Posted by NikonScott on June 18, 2018

I am landscape photographer and owned several APS-C Nikon camera´s, the latest being the outstanding D7200. The question is should you upgrade, and why the D850? I am certain that if you are reading this you have ´´trolled´´ all the sites and blogs to get familiar with the in depth features this camera offers, so I will not cover this. Coming strictly from a landscape/travel photographer perspective and transitioning to full frame, here is what I see:
    1) If you come from a D7100/D7200 the D850 multiple set up and customization screens are outstanding to customize your shooting. The menu´s mirror roughly 70% of these aforementioned APS-C cameras. If you are migrating from an introductory DSLR, your learning curve here is substantial. After all, this product is not targeted towards photographers just learning to use a DSLR.
    2) Functionally, the camera is heavier to carry around for landscape work and you will notice the difference. But, certain shooting aspects with this camera make that less important. For instance, the touchscreen is a real pleasure; touch auto focus and/or actuation in live view, live histogram and ease to access menu´s are a significant plus to me. The upgraded live view screen for lower light viewing to focus and ability to see greater detail vs D7200 screen is of large value to me.
    The Big Question...
    2) People ask me if the resolution makes a difference in picture quality in the D850 vs D7200. Answer: The D850 sensor is impressive in a couple of different respects. The ability to crop in significantly and maintain picture resolution with this camera is beyond what I would have expected. There is plenty of technical speak to read, but bottom line its a ´´wow´´. The ability to recapture detail in post processing for landscape/travel photographers is a key feature in this camera. Again, the sophistication of the Nikon designed sensor shines here by recovering detail with minimal to no noise. This is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the D850. Not only can detail be pulled out in high contrast scenes but the end result is a photo that has surpassed what I could capture with my D7200.
There are so many more features to speak to especially if you shoot sports, wildlife or portraits. But if you are primarily a landscape photographer and seek the upgrades I spoke to, then the D850 is the investment for you. Thank you Nikon for this wonderful product on your 100th year Anniversary.

Even a 5 year old can work it.

    Posted by 92corvette on June 18, 2018

The 850 is a very unique product in that it can assist you with many different facets of shooting subjects both in term of focus but also lighting. I was on a day trip with my son´s youngest. a 5 year old and handed him the camera. He was able to easily align the view through the finder and take a wonderful photo of his mother,

This camera will be hard to top

    Posted by BillT80 on June 18, 2018

Great in low light and I love the tilt touchscreen for working with low camera positions. The focusing and metering is great in all lighting situations. It also makes focusing with some of my old manual lens, very easy. This camera will be hard to top.

A very high end prosumer camera

Posted by rrwells on June 18, 2018

The camera performed exceptionally well in all circumstances so far. Be prepared to spend several weeks learning all of its capabilities and idiosyncrasies. The very large number of available auto focus modes and exposure modes can be confusing. Even if you are an experienced Nikon photographer. But the increased resolution (and therefore, the ability to crop without losing visible resolution) makes the camera easy to use.
However, it is heavy and may not be usable with all your accessories. For example, I had a five year old third party flash unit which could only operated in the manual mode. Purchasing a third party flash solved that problem and all modes were available.
