    Went from a 300s to the 500

Posted by Fstopdave on June 18, 2018

The low light photos are great. Faster and more user friendly then 300s.
A solidly built tough camera for carrying in the woods and Mts.

    D-500 Makes You Better

    Posted by Goldbeam335 on June 16, 2018

I really enjoy this camera. It is solid with enough weight to make it steadier but not too much that one would hate carrying it around. The D-500 has so many features, it can help you take better photos indoors or outdoors. Don´t get me wrong; if you get your settings all wrong, the camera will give you the image you set up for. This makes you better because the camera is at your command, not the other way around.

My son showed me ´´back button focusing´´, and it helped me take great shots of my friend and her rock band at a local venue. Pros and savvy photographers online who know their way around this awesome camera can help you squeeze every ounce of technology you choose to use. The menu interface is straightforward. Buttons are clearly marked. The D-500 feels great in my hands. It feels so satisfying to have people look at your photos and tell you that they are really good! I have a long way to go to develop my skills, but the D-500 is the right camera to help me along.

Great camera for shooting birds in flight

    Posted by AmirD500 on June 15, 2018

The main reason I chose the D500 over the D750 is the high frames per second and the buffer size. Coupled with the fastest XQD memory card, I am able to shoot a large burst of photos and not miss anything and not getting stuck waiting for the camera to write to the memory card.
Another great advantage is the Bluetooth娡 connectivity.
    There are two downsides:
    1) Complexity - the camera has so many options and controls that it requires two user guides: the main one has 400 pages; the 2nd is just to explain all the options in all the menus - 200 pages
    2) No built-in GPS - this forces me to use the Nikon GP-1, which is great, but then I cannot connect a wired remote, since they use the same connector to the camera.

    Awesome!

Posted by jojagard on June 12, 2018

I´ve been a Nikon shooter since 1980 when I got my first SLR: a Nikon FE. I made the switch to digital in 2008 when I purchased a D300. I´ve always been proud to be a Nikon user due to the quality and capabilities of the Nikon products I have used, and I´m so glad that Nikon continued this tradition of quality and innovation in the D500. The FX cameras are great, but anyone who is a serious student of photography knows that there are many advantages to the APS-C format and ´´full frame´´ sensors are largely overrated (not to mention prohibitively expensive when built into a pro-quality body). For these reasons, I´m so glad that Nikon made the decision to invest in a top quality DX body. Now I just hope that they also continue to make available pro quality DX lenses!

After 7 months - best camera I´ve ever owned

Posted by MrFreshBreeze on June 12, 2018

I purchased my NIKON D-500 along with a NIKKOR 200-500 mm lens and am having the best time ever with photography. I love the way I can set up the D-500 for the different kinds of shots I´m going to take and the results are fantastic. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone wanting to take great photos.

    Upped my game!

Posted by SCSmom on June 12, 2018

I upgraded from the D5300 kit.....I loved that camera, but wanted a faster shutter and other features to improve my sports photography. I also upgraded my lens and the combination produces results I am thrilled with! There is a learning curve, though - I actually printed out all the manuals and put them in a large binder. I suggest not attempting to ‘wing it´ if you are not familiar with all the manual settings.
I love that I can save settings for certain conditions such as indoor sports, where the fluorescent lighting was my nemesis!
Great camera, definitely an investment - no regrets

    Best camera I´ve ever owned

Posted by NevVic on June 11, 2018

I´ve been shooting with SLR and medium format film cameras for over fifty years and DSLRs since their inception. I bought my D500 when it first became available and shortly after that I bought my second one. I believe my D500 is the best camera I have ever owned. It´s only shortcoming is that it is DX format. At times I need the FX coverage and so I have a D850 but my first love is my D500s.

    A photographer´s dream!!

    Posted by NikonV2V on June 11, 2018

The D500 is a delight and a very capable upgrade from my D300. The camera features, especially its low light and auto-focus performance, are outstanding. With it, I can go anywhere with my 18-300 mm Nikon zoom and satisfy all my travel photography needs. I also like the tilting LCD which affords more accurate compositions from high or low vantage points. The ergonomics is true Nikon - the AF-ON button is just in the right position permitting easy use and, thus, encouraging decoupling it from the shutter button for better AF performance. I find that my battery life, even on airplane mode, is much shorter than advertised, seldom longer than 400 pictures. Not a problem as I always carry a spare battery, though. And I do wish for a built-in flash (my SB400 is getting a lot of use!!)... A solid, substantial camera for serious photographers, without the weight, cost and bulk of its full-frame siblings!!

    Awesome camera

Posted by Powderhound on June 10, 2018

I have been using the D500 for several months now. I purchased it with the battery pack and 16-80mm 2.8, and then purchased the 70-200 FL, 200-500, 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 10-20mm.

I use it for shooting wildlife and sports action as well as family and vacation photos. As a sports camera it is just fantastic. I find that it focuses very quickly in all lighting conditions. I have taken a few thousand photos and it rarely misses a shot. I shoot sports action primarily with the group autofocus setting. I have found that the 3D doesn´t work as well for bird photography. I really appreciate the joystick and the programmable capabilities of the camera. I have the single autofocus on button set to single point focus which allows me to change focus quickly.

The camera works exceptionally well with the outstanding 70-200 lens. It focuses instantly and is critically sharp. I also love the color rendition, even in JPEG setting. The 200-500 is also a great all purpose telephoto. It is not as fast focusing as the 70-200 but once it locks on, its stays locked on. Just a great value. Great color rendition with this sensor.

The 35mm and 50mm primes are also great prime lenses and I see no need for faster glass. The camera´s auto ISO abilities make shooting indoors with natural light very good. The camera has very nice images up to 6400 ISO, and, depending on how much I enlarge the images, I have taken shots at 12000 ISO with pleasing results.

There is always a trade off when using a DX sensor. Landscapes and ultra wide angles are affected by the 1.5 crop. However, for my needs the camera is perfect. I considered buying the D850 but I need the added reach of the DX. The D500´s build quality is also excellent. I also want the extra shutter rate without the need for a battery pack (D850).

I appreciate the backlit buttons. I also like the size of the camera. So much is made about the smaller size of mirrorless options. However, since I often shoot with the heavier telephoto glass, I feel that this camera has added stability. I don´t mind it´s added size. I prefer the grip and stability. It feels very solid, as do the full frame Nikon options.

To me, the choice of camera is all about what I shoot. I don´t think that there is a better camera for the money for shooting wildlife and sports. Maybe Nikon will come out with a 36 or 40megapixel DX camera. I could see myself upgrading to that.

The camera does such a great job with the excellent glass that it makes taking exceptional photographs so much easier. It´s almost unfair. I get rave reviews on all of my preferred images. This includes both sports and wildlife shots and the shots I take of my family, I also use the 16-80 for wide angle for our vacations.

I´m summary, I couldn´t be happier. I would note that I have auto fined tuned focus for every one of my lenses and it makes a big difference. One suggestion that I would add is that Nikon should create a TAP focus module like Tamron has. This will make a huge difference with fine tuning the focus of the zooms at different focal lengths.

I would also suggest that the next version of this camera have two XQD slots. Since I shoot to both cards simultaneously, the SD card slows me down when shooting action shots at a high shutter rate. There really is no need for an SD card anymore, in my opinion.

    Obviously, a great purchase.
