    incompatible with R1C1 Macro Flash

Posted by Frank on November 7, 2011

I today unpacked my this new macro lens that I ordered from Amazon and could not believe what I saw!
Like the much older 60mm Micro Nikkor this lens has ONLY a front lens filter thread. This means that the R1C1 Macro Flash can only be attached to the front lens element and not to the barrel of the lens. The weight of several macro flash heads (up to eight possible) is considerable.
For the 60 mm Micro Nikkor Nikon therefore provides the UR-5 adapter ring, so that the R1C1 can be attached to the barrel and not the front element of the lens. The new 40 mm DX Macro does not permit this. The R1C1 can ONLY be attached to the front lens, not the barrel. This incurs considerable wear on that extruding and moving front element and essentially means that this new MACRO lens is incompatible with Nikon´s own Macro flash. Incredible!
How can Nikon produce a new macro lens incompatible with its own macro flash set? This would perhaps not even be so bad if this was a larger focal lens, where working distance permits minute objects to be illuminated quite well even without a flash. However, for a lens with such an extremely short working distance, using a flash to obtain maximum depth of field for macro-photography is almost a must.
I was so hopeful that this much lighter lens would replace my now almost antique 60 mm macro. Sadly I can only return it.

Very pleasing bokeh and respectable closeup, The focusing is not fast but responsive. This inexpensive lense is definitely worth very penny.

    Stunning..!

Posted by Sayed on October 24, 2011

It´s an excellent piece of glass, no doubt. I´ve just bought it through online and shoot some pictures of my baby, family members, also some lanscapes. I really wonder to see that it´s sharpness on all apertures is excellent. My macro shots of flowers and some tiny toys are also stunning. This lens is really versatile and great for it´s price. And this is the sharpest among cheaper Nikkor lenses. I don´t care its technical aspects, but really really satisfied with real life photography. Definitely, this is a gift for DX format Nikonians. Just one sentence about this lens: ´´Real professional quality with an amateure price´´. Just take it and enjoy...

    the 40mm

Posted by Ricknitchie on July 23, 2011

This lens is excellent, it is an amazing product and is so useful!
The main features of it are its super fast and sharp 2.8 aperature capabilites which makes snapping frogs and insects in dark rainforest conditions ideal. It is amazing and has the roughly the same focus distance as the 85 macro. The only slight drawback about it is that it is DX which means no high end cameras can use it.
However this didn´t come to mind when purchasing it because it was so affordable, and it was money well spent!
