Improved EYE AF - but still not good enough

Posted by wildlifeshooter on March 2, 2020

I appreciate the frequent firmware upgrades - with 3.0 eye AF improves, but still not good enough. Tracks a little too slow for moving subject and person has to be fairly close for eye to pickup... getting better, just not there yet. Overall use / quality of camera is excellent, especially with native lenses

When you think the camera could not get any better, and the firmware update turns up the fun. Now auto tracking animals and allowing for fast focusing and tracking. Download this update and have fun taking that 4 legged friends pictures.

    auto focus

Posted by usnack on March 2, 2020

The auto focus works well but could be improved closer to Sony. Takes beautiful landscapes. I wish it would start faster. When you raise the camera to your eye I expect it to be ready like my old D750. The controls and screen are great. Need a little time to get use to it.

You need to do in camera 10 bit.

Posted by Darrinp on March 2, 2020

I love this camera but you need to jump up to some of the competition with 10 bit in camera. That´s a big downfall.

    Another great jump

Posted by Godric on March 2, 2020

Nikon has been constant in there commitment to perfecting their first gen cameras the z6 recently has been upgraded to almost an entirely new feel. Tracking and autofocus has improved greatly. I believe a couple more leaps like this last update will be sure to by-pass Sony. I use the z6 for night photography and video and the z7 for day shooting. It has been great shooting with them and happy I made the jump. I cannot wait to get the 70 200 f2.8. If it is as good as my 35 1.8, 24 70 f2.8, 14 30 f4 or my 85 f1.8, it will easily be a welcomed addition. 1000% satisfied.

    50 Years Plus

    Posted by F3HP on February 9, 2020

I purchased my first Nikon camera in 1969 - an FTn. It was succeeded by generations of new Nikon models and most recently, the Z6. Wow! Handling the Z6 for the first time reminds me of my first encounter with the superb F3HP. It feels ´just-right´.

Using the Z6 for the first time was a breeze. The menus were familiar and the touch-screen made adjustments easy. The low-light capability using the 24-70 f/4 kit lens was impressive. A photo of a bookcase in a room lit by fading twilight produced a impressive image. From a distance of 25 feet, the titles and small print on the spine of every book was clearly defined. The color of each book was perfect. The exposure was spot-on.

I was apprehensive about using the FTZ adapter. I tried it out with several different lens. My FX lens worked perfectly. I tried several DX lens. Again, no problem. The viewfinder provides a full, bright image with DX lens. A notable stand-out was the AF-P 50-200 DX lens - fast focus and very sharp. Mounted on the Z6/FTZ, DX lens make a very comfortable and light-weight combination.

Is the Z6 perfect? No. There are a few small things I would like to tweak. But it is the best Nikon camera I have used in the last 50 years. Would I recommend it to a friend? Absolutely. Without reservation.
