As a long term Nikon owner (1974) I was sitting on the fence on the new D850. I owned at the time a D4 and D5 (D4 has been sold) so I was torn to go mirrorless (Z7) or stay with a DSLR and upgrade to the D850. After countless articles and comparisons I bought a new D850. Out of the box it is great and a solid camera. Initial images are crazy sharp and clean ( I use all Nikon glass ). So why did I give it only 4 stars instead of 5. Simple, after 2 months of use I have not gotten deep enough into the camera or used it to give what I consider an honest opinion. I shoot wildlife and plan on 3 weeks in Yosemite and then off to Zion and Bryce Canyon. I think after I put it through the paces there and have enough hands on time and exposure to shooting different lighting scenarios and conditions I feel confident it will be 5 stars.

This camera has quickly become a joy to use. I was happy to have the D850 when my daughter asked me to do the wedding pictures for my grandson and his bride. I find this camera to be friendly with doing events, family, nature, and landscapes. The options provided has made taking pictures more enjoyable.

After getting the D850 my wife wanted a demonstration to show why this was an improvement over what I already had (D810). I set up a comparison test at 3200 and 6400 ISO under indoor existing light conditions. We then compared the two results of unprocessed RAW files in Lightroom in side-by-side views on a high resolution monitor. My wife immediately chose the D850 as the better, higher quality shot. Enough said. Thanks Nikon.

I do agree with the saying that it is the most versatile camera made from Nikon thus far. Of course it´s not going to be as versatile as the flagship cameras but besides the iso performance of the D5, I find the D850 a lot more useful due to the still impressive iso performance, the incredible resolution, etc. Pairing this camera with my new 105 1.4 lens (which quickly became my favorite lens), I´m getting incredible results with my portraits, which is what I´m primarily using this camera for. I do have confidence in this camera that I can use it as my primary pro portrait camera, studio camera camera, and i will use this as a solid backup and primary for bridal portraits, family formals, etc for weddings.

I have a D500, my wife has a D750. We are not professional photographers; just enthusiasts. We shoot a variety of subjects. We both really like to shoot birds in flight. We both use the Nikkor 200-500 - 5.6 for that. I have gotten some really amazing shots with the D500 and the 200-500, but the D850 takes my shooting to a new level. The quality of the pictures and the level of detail out of the camera are pretty amazing. The 45 MP BSI sensor is able to really capture so much detail that the difference with the D500 and even the D750 is pretty noticeable. I shoot in RAW 14 bit lossless compressed format, so the file sizes are fairly large, but memory is cheap, and it gets cheaper all of the time, so I would not let that be a deciding factor. The D500´s 10 fps and large buffer are great features, but the D850 can hold its own, especially if go with the battery pack (9fps)(Which I do not have, so I can only go by what I´ve read). The D850 feels solid in your hands, and I don´t think the fact that it is fairly substantial in size is a negative, especially if you have fairly large lens hanging off the front of the camera. The D850 is not inexpensive, but I think that the value is there, and if you decide to purchase one, I do not think you will be disappointed with that decision. I know I am not.
