We have come a Long way
Posted by Robert Lype on November 26, 2025
After taking delivery of my D6 to replace my D4s and one of my D3xs which after years of daily hard use in Fairbanks Alaska without any issues I could not resolve myself even under extreme cold conditions. The new D6 was a well thought out purchase and overdue and well worth it. Fairbanks has some of the most challenging light in the world which normally requires tweaking the settings to compensate for the constant changing lighting conditions well not anymore, the D6 is now the go to camera and the 1st of the 2 new D6s in the plan. To set the record straight going mirrorless was considered, ergonomics was one major factor after over 40 years of shooting Nikon your mind and hands develop a memory, major changes in the control's layout would slow down the workflow. Opening the box with the new D6 was a bit disappointing not being able to break the seal which isn't the end of the world. Another minor let down was no quick guide which comes in handy while learning a new camera body when out in the field. The improved enhanced hand grips is a welcome feature, working outside in the winter operating the camera is more comfortable with gloves on. This includes operating the smallest buttons with gloves on which is a big win. Having the ability to easily to remove the eye piece to clean it was long overdue, along with the other enhanced controls which now can be changed while having the camera in the shooting position even with gloves on. As a Photojournalist my goal is to capture images which represent the actual scene getting it right in the camera is extremely important in today's instant news coverage. Right out of the box into the winter wonderland fresh snow on the ground with temps hovering around 0 degrees we went out for the testing. Below are the results of what totally blow me away, I thought I was going have to tweak the setting in both photos, boy was I wrong!Retirement is closing in fast as the next chapter is about to start, for over 40 years of using Nikons fulfilling everyone else's needs it's time to share my view of the world on my terms. Over the years Nikon Cameras helped develop my style just the short time of using the camera I can see the D6 will only enhance my style. It didn't take long to make the choice of the second D6 to round out the last new Nikons as my retirement cameras. For years I have depended on Nikon equipment to get the job done my first impressions of the D6 in cold and dark conditions was of confidence that I had bought the best DSLR camera money can buy. Working with camera gear beyond the intended temperature range comes with a risk of damaging the gear, it is not recommended, there are precautions and methods that must be taken this is not negotiable! There is plenty advice on this matter online choose it wisely. Thanks, Nikon, for joining me in my many adventures over the years it will be an honor to end my career and beyond with the D6 hanging of my shoulder

Best of the Best for Sports Photography
Posted by A Customer on September 9, 2022
I have had the D5, still do. The D6 was worth the purchase as the enhancements to the focus is amazing. We primarily shoot Rodeo and Surfing action. For sports and action photography there is no better choice.

Nikon D6
Posted by Paul Evans on March 21, 2022
I have been shooting the Nikon D4 for the last 3 years and I love the camera, but when I finally took the plunge and got the Nikon D6 I was blown away with the auto white balance and the speed with which it focuses. I know everyone is going mirrorless, but I like DSLR cameras, especially the Nikon Pro Bodies. The is absolutely the best camera I have ever gotten my hands on.

At first I was a little disapointed in the D6, auto focus, but once they corrected it in the updates, I am a very happy with it, I would love to test the first pro Z9 Nikon :-)

D6, the Best Nikon DSLR ever for WildLife Photography
Posted by Hai Ta on June 13, 2021
I have been a Nikon user shooting birds photography since 2008, using D700, D3s, D4, D4s, D5 and D6. My primary lenses: 300f4, 500f4G, 300 f4 pf, 600 mm f4G and 800mm f5.6 E.Life began getting better with D3s and 600 mm f4G and much better with D4s back then. D5 was a real changer and I was in paradise shooting birds with better success rate, better dynamic range for picture quality. I thought it was the limit but No! D6 focusing and dynamic range are even better, its menu system also gives me more options, flexibility for shooting birds in flight. Nowadays I travel with my D6 connected to the 800mm lens, shooting on tripod; and a D5 on 500 f4 shooting handheld. My only wish now is Nikon coming out with Z9, much lighter and even better focusing and frame rates that would help me continue my hobby in my retirement age. Thank you Nikon

My Nikon D6 Is Simply An Amazing Camera
Posted by Thomas Kachelmeyer on May 17, 2021
My main focus is wildlife photography. I push the limits in all types of habitat and weather conditions. The primary lens I use is NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED along with NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED and NIKKOR 300mm F/2.8G ED VR II. When I purchased my D4s, I thought I had gone to heaven for the speed, low light conditions, dynamic range, AF, and how great it felt in my hand. But, as with any professional situation, you are always looking for ways to improve your results, so I ended up purchasing a D5 which in itself is a great camera. I kept my D4s as a secondary body. When news of the D6 started to flow out, I analyzed all the good and bad reviews, looking for crucial improvements that I could take advantage of, even if there were minor improvements. From my perspective, if I can see an ROI of 2 or 3 amazing shots per trip by upgrading to this camera, that can make a huge difference in delivering the result my clients expect. It was a tough decision, but I sold my D4s and purchased the D6 in August 2020. I can't tell you how pleased I am with the performance of my D6 in all kinds of weather conditions, especially paired up with my NIKKOR 600mm f/4. It's all those key improvements that add up to make this a tremendous camera. My camera bag always has my D850 and D5 with me, but my D6 is my go-to camera.Just a fantastic Camera, you will not be disappointed! Tom :)
