    Somewhat satisfied

    Posted by Islander14 on March 18, 2019

The autofocus on the D500 is great and is its standout feature. High ISO is quite good too, for an APSC camera.

    A few quibbles:

The bottom info bar in the viewfinder is unreadable in daylight, making on the fly exposure adjustments near impossible.

Battery life is not at advertised (I get 500 shots at best),

    The shutter is really noisy

The Shooting Banks IMHO are a really poorly thought out idea. I have other cameras that have user defined settings right on the mode wheel and this works brilliantly. Nikon´s version is clumsy and, to my mind, more trouble than it´s worth.

To be honest I was expecting more from this camera. It is kind of neither here nor there. In most situations other than in low light an MFT camera with top notch glass and amazing IBIS would cost less, be lighter and do about as well. Most of the really good lenses for the D500 seem to be FX lenses and they are heavy. As a result with the D500 you get the disadvantage of full-frame lens weight as well as the disadvantage of a smaller DX sensor.

Would I recommend the D500? Given a yes or no choice i have to say that for the price I would recommend it particularly if you are shooting action or wildlife. However if you can pay a bit more (and depending on what you like to shoot) I think there are better options these days. For low light go full frame. For portability and flexibility go MFT.

    Great for bird photography

Posted by MrOregon on February 13, 2019

With the D500 at 10 fps and my Nikon AF-S FX Nikkor 200-500mm f/f.6 zoom, I have a combination that has allowed me to capture shots that I only dreamed about. This has got to be one of the best packages for bird photography available. I have also added my Nikon 1.4x teleconverter when 500mm just is not enough. Weighing in at only 8 lbs., it is easily carried and hand held in the field to capture birds in flight. I am a happy camper.

Love it so much I have two

I shoot whales, which can be very challenging. First your platform is rocking constantly (boat), next-the autofocus has a hard time with waves and splashed next to subject. Third, the whales are unpredictable and super fast. Exposure varies constantly because of whales breaching 360 degrees around the boat. Not many cameras can accommodate all these challenges. I used to shoot a D800 and it was very hard with only 4fps. D500 is super fast and being a crop sensor, changes my 2 lenses into x1.5 from FX size. My 70-200 is a 105-300mm and 300 2.8 is a 450mm. 10fps with XQD (love these cards) amazing new autofocus system grabs focus instantly and with pro lenses- there is no better camera for what I do. Highly recommended to all action photogs. Best in the world, in my opinion and I have been. Nikon man since 1977.

    The D300 successor... FINALLY!

Posted by Barthophoto on February 3, 2019

It´s about time. I replaced my D200 and D300´s with the d7000, the D7100, and the D7500. While they are great compact cameras, the D500 blows them all out of the water, with it´s Image quality, crazy fast fps, and overall build. I´m an ex newspaper photog, so I´ve done it all and used it all up until 2005. The original D1 is on the list...Baha! Since then, I´ve stuck with the DX format, It´s quite a bit heftier than the D7000 series, just the right amount of heft between the 7000´s and the tank like D1 through D5. It is hands down the best DX camera Nikon has ever produced. This thing is fast, fast as lightning, 10 frames per second...What? Ya super fast. The auto focus is also fast, accurate and the best I´ve used. Birds in flight with a 200-500, yep! It´s just a fantastic camera, the one I´ve been waiting for!

    Better than I thought

    Posted by 500RVA on January 19, 2019

Moved up from D3400. Have been impressed with performance of camera. Still trying to figure out all of its capabilities. Images produced so far have been excellent. Had thought about mirrorless, but think this was right move for me.

    Couldn´t be happier

Posted by Ruthie on December 5, 2018

I´m extremely happy with my purchase of the D500. As a beginner I was terrified of buying the wrong camera that I would outgrow fast. This definitely gives tons to work with. Obviously there is a learning curve from going from my note 8 phone to a dslr but I have had no problem getting some amazing pictures of my family. I did alot of research before deciding on this camera and I´m so glad I chose this one. I will definitely be able to use this for years to come without having any regrets of wishing I´ve gone full frame. Also glad I decided on the camera and its ´´kit´´ lens.
