    All in one lens

Posted by GarryOwen on April 13, 2011

If I could have only one lens choice it would be this lens! From wide to long, excellent all in one lens, especially for walking around and wanting to be light in carrying things. I remember nearly 30 years ago in Asia carrying a bag with 7 primes, weight was 35 pounds! This lens would replace all of those but one a macro. As a general all purpose lens this is it. Two drawbacks though: f3.5-5.6 variable aperture, I´d prefer a fixed f4. The VR helps to make this up but... It does have some barrel distortion at least in the first version, which is the one I have.

Very Versitile - Good for Traveling

    Posted by is0lde on April 13, 2011

This lens has a great range. It takes clean crisp photos, in most light conditions. It is ideal for travelling - no need to carry 5 different lenses if you looking for a good all round zoom option.
Big disadvantage is the lens creep.

    Good lens for the price.

Posted by Tarzana on April 13, 2011

Good lens for the price. Wanted one lens for traveling. As one gets older, one does not want to carry many lens. Just shot over 2500 pictures. Unfortunately the lens is a little slow at times. Still worth the $$s.

    A lens of great versatility

Many claim that one lens can do it all, but few succeed. This Nikon is the exception.

    great all around zoom

    Posted by rnb4me2 on April 13, 2011

This lens appears to be a really good combination for a walk around lens. It works especially well for most shooting situations. I have tried the macro and it gives pretty good results. All in all, this should be the kit lens on cameras such as the D7000, or even a D300. superb lens.

    Great for casual photography

Posted by Troy from oz on April 13, 2011

This lens has mixed reviews around the web, but used for what it is, it is a truly great lens. I have taken many, many pictures of landscapes and portraits and I am happy with all of them.
    .
Granted, nice prime lenses will produce beautiful shots, but they do not come close to the versatility of this lens. I´ve found it to be incredible for instantly picking people out of larger groups for candid shots - like at a wedding or family gathering. This is something you simply cannot do with a specialised prime. Likewise, lenses that fit somewhere in the middle of the 18-200´s zoom range will require a lot of moving around to get good shots. With the 18-200 you can pretty-much stay in a fixed position and quickly take pictures both close and far away.
    .
Likewise for walking around spots like a tourist destination, you can quickly lock onto any point of interest and get the shot. Some shooting opportunities don´t hang around for you to position your shot, so having this zoom provides a far greater range of unplanned shots that add well to your collection.
