Simply Amazing
Posted by Ridgewalker on January 22, 2017
I recently purchased this lens and am greatly impressed with the quality of the macro images I have taken. It produces crystal clear, razor sharp details at extremely close distances. It is a feature rich lens with vibration reduction and a manual override of the amazingly accurate autofocus. The distance scale is also a reproduction scale display allowing for greater creative control of macro photography. This lens also takes great general photos at 85mm focal length. I am more than satisfied in my purchase of this lens.

Nice lens, but overpriced for what you´re getting.
Posted by Thecatint on January 17, 2017
I got this lens as part of the macro portrait lens kit for my first 2 lenses (like almost everyone else here), I have to say, not bad, it is a great macro lens that I really use for portraits more than I do macro uses. You do get VR for those beginners without tripods, and 85mm isn´t that bad of a focal length, but i found this lens pretty overpriced for what you are getting, if you want a nice macro and don´t want to pay as much, I highly suggest the 40mm macro which is far cheaper and just as good, Although I wouldn´t recommend this product, it is still very nice and does a great job, but it is just too overpriced. I would like to see this lens cost more like 300-400 dollars, If you want to get this in the macro portrait lens kit, do what I did by getting it when it is ON SALE, that specific kit has a serious drop in price on sales, more than any other Nikon product I know of, so If you want to get the lens kit, you will save a lot of money by getting it when it is on sale.

Great value and very useful
Posted by Hans on January 1, 2017
I am a long time photo hobbyist and have owned a lot of great gear. I got one of these in the two lens special deal, the other being the great 35mm F/1.8DX. At first I was a little uncertain about this lens as I had seen some reviews that were not the best. Well, I say you need to try this lens to appreciate what it can do. I love it! It is an unassuming lens to look at but when you use it the pictures are great. Its actually a lot of fun to use as you start seeing things around you in a different.light as you move in close. The quality of the photos is great too, and I am comparing it to some pretty high dollar lenses I use with my D750, D7100 and D5200.
Some want to compare it to Nikon´s excellent 105 Macro lens. The highly regarded 105 is about twice the price! One should ask themselves just how good a lens do you really need? Are you a pro who needs the absolute best regardless of price or are you a hobbyist who just enjoys the fun of taking pictures? Some will tell you that they can actually see little difference in photos taken with this compared to the 105.
This lens does a very good job. I am very happy with my results with it and feel its a good value at its price point. If money is no object buy the 105 for twice as much. But if you are looking for good value for a amateur photographer this 85mm VR lens pushes all the right buttons. Just look at some of the great sample pictures others have posted. This thing works great! I am happy to say I would buy it again. -

Very fun lens

I really enjoy this lens for taking pictures of flowers and people. Granted that to get anything beyond a face with an 85 mm lens you need considerable distance, nevertheless the image quality is great and creates a lovely bokeh.

A LOT of chromatic aberration.
Posted by macroshooter on April 21, 2016
This lens creates a lot of chromatic aberration. In almost every single picture I have taken with this lens, there is a good amount of irritating blue and yellow chromatic aberration. I would recommend this lens to someone who is new and doesn´t notice things like this in their images , but for someone who cares about image quality and wants it to be the best possible, i would tell them not to get this lens.

Slower than I wanted for a prime
Posted by Bratt on April 8, 2016
Overall a good lens, was able to bundle purchase with a fast 35mm, so it was real value for two lenses under $500´´otherwise I may not have bought a macro or even this one.

Excellent Micro Lens and Portrait Lens Combination
Posted by Scripps23 on March 15, 2015
I put my Nikon 85mm DX Macro Lens through its paces this weekend. It performed extremely well as both a macro lens and a portrait lens. Its light weight makes it very portable and the optics are excellent. Below is a photo of a Paper Kite butterfly taken at the annual San Diego Zoo Safari Park ´´Butterfly Jungle´´ exhibit. The shutter speed is 1/250 of a second, the aperture is f/16, the ISO is 560, white balance is ´´Flash,´´ and exposure is ´´Matrix Metering.´´ Also below is a portrait of my grandson at his first T-Ball game. The shutter speed is 1/200 of a second, the aperture is f/3.5, the ISO is 100, white balance is ´´Auto,´´ and exposure is ´´Matrix Metering.´´
