The Nifty Fifty
Posted by hazmatt_81 on August 16, 2010
For the price, you definitley can´t go wrong with this lens. Very excellent in low lighting. It´s my first prime lens and I now see why so many reviews say that any avid photographer must have this lens in their arsenal. I´ve already had to lend it to my brother in law and mother in law...they love prime glass! Very fast autofocus if you need it. I enjoy the very shallow DOF and Boket that you get from this lens Images are just sharp as a razor. There´s really nothing bad to say about this product!

Fast, hi quality at low price
Posted by sparky on August 15, 2010
I own several Nikkors. This lens is one of the sharpest and cheapest of them all which makes for no worry carrying it most anywhere. It is fast and great in low light. It is also compact and fits in any pocket. Its field of view makes it very useful for most situations and with a simple reversing ring makes a great macro rig. It usable on my older film cameras and my D70 Quite simply just a superb all-around versatile lens.

Best Lens for the $
Posted by AIP Dave on August 11, 2010
This lens should be in everyones bag. I always recommend this lens for anyone who is looking for a first lens or an only lens! You will not be dissapointed. I have owned the 50 1.8 as well as the 50 1.4 and still prefer the 50 1.8! It is lightweight, compact, fast focusing, and great glass! If you are looking for a bargain lens for low light or natural light shooting then this lens is a must! If you can only get one lens, strongly consider this one! You can not beat the price for what you can do with this lens!

inexpensive but produces great results

Years ago when I was shopping for my first prime lens to venture beyond my kit lens this is the one I picked up. I´ve never been disappointed by the images produced digitally from this lens.
On digital bodies this is really a short telephoto considering that the crop factor in reality makes this a 75mm prime. It´s perfect for portrait use, as it allows me to maintain some distance from the subject. I find models tend to appreciate a little distance from the camera. In small rooms this can present a problem though, as small rooms only allow so much space for you to back away from your subject to compose your image.
At f/1.8 to about f/2.4 the images are soft. At f/2.8 images start to become crisp and reach their best at f/5.6. The lens has a metal mount which many have stated is difficult to mount on the camera body until after a short break in period. The lens body is made of plastic, but still a durable design that can take some rough treatment.
My main complaint with this lens is that the barrel of the lens rotates as it focuses making use of circular polarizers and other filters a bit of a challenge. Really this is only a problem I encounter in landscape photography though.
All in all, this lens has produced some outstanding senior portraits, bridal portraits, and landscape images. I´ve never yet had a reason to be disappointed with this lens. -

An excellent lens which even pros would like.

This product is a lens that every amatuer to pro would simply love. I have used my lens for several years and I have a nice stockade of lenses. However, I always keep this lens with me since it will be useful for any scenario from night photography to portrait photography to even wedding photography.

Nikon´s Best Lens
Posted by Symmetre on August 5, 2010
Let me echo others who rave about this wonderful little lens. It´s sharper than the 50mm f1.4D, weighs only half as much, costs half as much, yet delivers the same or even slightly better optical performance. Distortion is essentially zero. It won´t ghost even if you shoot straight into the sun. And, it´s a magnificent performer in low light. Quite honestly, Nikon´s best lens value by far, and optically one of the best lenses the company has ever made. Bravo!

Buy this lens, you will never regret it.

I purchased this 50mm f/1.8 lens for use on my new D300s. I had used the same lens on my F-100 SLR but wanted to keep the systems seperate. This lens is very, very sharp and even on my D300s with it´s crop factor (75mm) it is really nice. Light weight, fast, and compact. I use a Nikon Clear filter on it with Nikon´s rubber hood. Perfect. This is an inexpensive lens that takes beautiful pictures. Get one, you won´t regret it.

Outstanding bargain!
Posted by ronnieD81 on August 3, 2010
This lens is an absolute steal for the price you pay and the performance you get. The lens is very sharp and contrasty. The lens stays on my D700 the majority of the time. With the low light capability of the D700 and the speed of the lens, it makes for an awesome ready-for-anything setup. I have used a Nikkor 50mm since the first one I purchased in 1987 and love the perspective and results that I get. Just get one!
