This lens has been my most important tool in my camera bag. I use it more than any other lens I have and its versatility is off the charts.
Great lens for macro and pictures, very light in weight
Had to send the lens back to Nikon. Seems to have a problem in the focus shifting procedures.Getting halos around cactus and also leaves of plants. My older one was better.
I owned the F-mount version and sold it as I also own the Nikkor 70-180 micro zoom, which is tack sharp even after 25 years. I bought this Z version as I am going totally mirrorless. This new lens has replaced my 70-180 in my macro bag. Looking forward to pairing it up with Nisi's 77mm close up filter and focusing rail now that spring has arrived in Eastern PA.
This lens is super sharp and allows me enough distance as to not disturb most subjects. The only con I think of is the slow focus speed beyond what is already close to the current focus. Recomposing and focus is not an issue. The focus becomes an issue when first searching for the subject. The lens (camera?) will search through the range before, hopefully, landing on the subject. Using the focus limiter helps a little. Though on one occasion the lens wouldn’t focus at all with the limiter turned on. I had the turn off the camera, remove the lens, reattach, and turn it back on. As scary as that sounds, I’ve had very little issues with this lens. How sharp this lens is cannot be emphasized enough! Love it and I’ve produced some jaw dropping images. The booth is silly, creamy, lovely! Seriously. Love the programmable button. I use it for f-stop down preview to get an idea of my focus range. Love the positive locking hood. The lens is actually pretty tough. My camera fell off my tripod (thought the base plate was locked when it was not). I was lucky that the glass didn’t hit anything, but the barrel chipped at the front. With all that said, the lens soldiered on without issue. That was about 6 months ago. Excellent optics, slow focus, beautiful images.
As someone who shot with the 85mm 1.8 for 90% of their portfolio, I didn't think there was a lens that could rival the quality that it gave me. It's safe to say I was wrong when Nikon released this 105mm which has given me texture and character that other lenses haven't. It being so lightweight and so well built gives me all of the comfort knowing i'll have it for a long time. When you invest in this lens you are not getting just one lens but two. Which at its price point you can't beat that. I shoot primarily fashion and commercial and this currently is my tool of choice forever.
What a fabulous lens! I enjoy taking pictures of my garden and this lens is such a joy to use. It is very quick and sharp. The colors just pop.
This lens performs exceptionally well! Beyond the tack sharp images, the built-in VR, creamy smooth bokeh, and excellent colors rendered by this lens makes it one of the best lenses I have ever used. It's lighter than expected and the focusing is very fast and accurate.
My top-performing macro lens.I use this new Z MC 105mm lens on the Nikon Z7 II body and find that it acquires focus fast, even in low light. No detectable aberration, even when the subject is backlit by the sun. I use it as much for video as stills, and my subjects are fast-moving insects such as honey bees. There is "some" focus breathing, so when doing stacked images, fix the focus and then use a macro rail system over focusing with the lens and that won't be a problem.Solid build and I've had it in the rain with no weather seal issues (lens to camera body).I also have the previous FX Nikon 105 (AF-S MICRO NIKKOR 105mm 1:2.8G ED) and this Z-Lens is out-performing that previous lens in every practical way. I won't miss the constant focus and racking noises when trying to get nature sequences with video.I have far more control with this lens and don't mind the size and weight considering the quality of the captured images. I could not give a stronger endorsement, THIS is THE choice for any of your Z-bodies. Perfectly priced. Get one, you won't be disappointed.
