    December 2024 and NOT obsolete

Posted by Marty Steres on December 17, 2024

I have always been a Nikon guy, I bought my first Nikon (FG) back in 1986. A few years ago, I was shooting with a D7500 and various lenses. I was going to make the jump to a Z6 but opted to go with the D780. I did not need 45 MP for the portrait and product work I was doing, plus I wanted to try the hybrid D780.I was told it is essentially a Z6 version 2 when in liveview and an improved D750 in viewfinder mode. This has turned out to be true. I had a collection of lenses, some new, some old, and all of them work flawlessly with the D780. My favorite is the Nikon 105mm, f2 DC (bokeh king); it also works wonderfully with my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, Nikon 50 mm 1.4 D, and 60 mm Micro. I have some other brand lenses, and it focuses beautifully with all of them.So at Christmas 2024, is this still a worthwhile purchase? Yes, it is; it has long battery life, two card slots, eye/face detection, and is well built. It does not possess some of the features of the latest Mirrorless, but it does, as every Nikon ever produced, provide great color and quality photos. I have not second-guessed my purchase since I bought this camera.

NIkon and Nikkor lenses are number 1.

Posted by Stephen Disselkoen on November 22, 2024

I have been using Nikon Camera's since the 70's starting with a F2. The camera and Nikkor lenses brought out the best photos. I have had a Nikon D70 and D90, but I missed the full frame like the F2. I bought the D780 with the 24-120mm zoom and later added the 80 - 400 mm. This provides great coverage for any subject. I just purchased a 50 mm f1.8 for an all-around Lense. This camera brings me back to the old days backpacking in the Sierras. It's heavy but it makes your shot steadier. I took the Nikon School 3 times in the seventies and the Nikon Digital School in 90's, which taught me how to shoot the different styles of photography.

Please upgrade the firmware of D780 to make its live view better! ~

Posted by Desmond Lai on August 15, 2023

I have used the best digital SLR, the picture quality is beautiful, the skin color is very beautiful and close to Canon, but I hope Nikon can make the live view function of D780 better and more perfect through firmware. The focus of D780 still has many shortcomings, but I just don’t understand Why can Z6 with the same motherboard and cpu make live view like Z6II through firmware upgrade, but D780 can't?

    Great mid price FX camera

Posted by Peter Accordino on April 27, 2023

I was looking last year to finally go mirrorless. I was using a D7500 which I love; but wanted to upgrade to a full frame. I tried a D850, but it didn’t suit me. I researched a lot and decided to get the D780. I shoot mainly wildlife, like birds in flight. This body works great in low light. I pair it with the Nikon 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR, and the 1.4tc. This puts me at f8 which is the sweet spot for this set up. Great auto focus and sharpness. I think I’ll stay with the DSLR, until Nikon works out the auto focus issues on the mid range mirrorless models. For $2,100 you can’t go wrong.

    Best upgrade ever

    Posted by C R on September 12, 2022

Like other reviewers here, I moved up to the D780 from a DX (D5500) format. After a year of using and learning, it has been a huge leap in photo quality and features. On a just completed vacation, the landscape photography was super crisp. The added white balance settings gave more flexibility for getting the color right; I also worked with temperature settings with excellent results. My choice of the D780 over the mirrorless models was made on the investments I've made in F-mount lens.

    My favorite DSLR!

Posted by Stefan McFall on August 8, 2022

I love my D780! It literally does everything well, including 4k video. It definitely breathed new life into my older Nikon D lenses as well. I use it in tandem with my Nikon z6ii and the files are very similar to edit.

    My new D780

Posted by William Miller on May 5, 2022

It is everything I thought it would be! I just changed over from my D5600 of 5 years (still have and use), to the D780. I still have a bit of work to do with learning all the functions and capabilities, but I'm looking forward to taking that journey. It is an excellent hybrid DSLR that allows me to take advantage of some of the capabilities of a mirror less camera without changing platforms and lens base. Thanks Nikon, I'm throughly impressed.
