WiFi does not work as advertised

Posted by Woelzd on April 5, 2017

The camera is great. If only the wifi connection to snapbridge on my iPhone would work, it would be great. How do I get my money back? Without the remote working reliably, it is useless to me.

And yes, I contacted customer support who told me to do all the stuff I had already done. I am running snapbridge 1.2.0 with iOS 10.2.1 and camera firmware C1.01/L2.015. Maybe putting it here will get some attention.

Beware of SnapBridge´s False Promises (Even with Updated Firmware)

Posted by jeremyhu on March 2, 2017

The only real reasons to get the D5600 instead of a D5300 is for SnapBridge and the touch-screen interface. I don´t believe that justifies it costing about twice as much as a D5300 ($700 D5600 vs $350 D5300).

The touchscreen is nice given the lack of controls on the rest of the body. I still miss the second dial from my D90, but the touch interface on the D5600 is good enough for most cases. That being said, I don´t think it´s that much more useful than the D5300´s D-pad interface.

The main selling point of the D5600 over the D5300 is SnapBridge vs GPS. The D5300´s geotagging support is abysmal. Even in the best of conditions (tediously updating to a recent A-GPS file, shooting in a park with good LOS to satellites, etc), I only got about geotags in about 10% of my photos. However, that condition is BETTER than SnapBridge in its current (1.2.0 SnapBridge 1.0.1 D5600) state.

Today, I updated my D5600 to the latest firmware that was just released. Pairing still failed the first time I tried it, but once established, the pairing seems to persist now, and my camera and phone appear to be connected when in proximity. On the downside, the software is still awful and does not work well. The primary reason that I want SnapBridge is for geotagging. The camera does add geotags, but they´re VERY inaccurate. The phone is spot on with its location, but the camera is often using a GPS location that is 30-60 minutes old, often using a much older geotag even though a newer one is available.

Below is a dump of my exif data for multiple files that I took today to test out Snapbridge (my phone was continually within about 5 feet of the camera, and I was in constant motion in a vehicle). Note that ´TimeZone=-08:00´.

You´ll see that DSC_0017 was taken at 23:46:55Z, but the camera used a 23:37:50.38Z geotag instead of the 23:44:22.45Z geotag that was obviously available (as it was used in the very next photo). In this case, we got a very stale geotag (over 9 minutes old) even though there was a less stale geotag available to the camera (2.5 minutes old). 2.5 minutes old is still not ideal, but it´s certainly better than 9 minutes.

As an even clearer example, take a look at DSC_0034. In the case of DSC_0034, the geotag that was used was almost an hour old, but there was a geotag available that was ´´only´´ 7 minutes old at that point. Obviously, a 7 minute old geotag is not acceptable, but it´s MUCH better than one that is an hour old.

At least with the D5300, it was obvious which photos needed manual geotagging since they were missing tags. Now, we get geotags on all files, but we have zero confidence in their correctness.

    Unacceptable!

Bundle quietly leaves out VR on 70-300 lens

Posted by HyperLunatic on February 24, 2017

Beware. This bundle sounds like a great deal, however, the 70-300 lens is not VR. It would be great if Nikon provided a bundle that included VR on both lenses. Other than that, it is a great camera.

Price Features Quality = Great Choice!

    Posted by FH_Photog on February 19, 2017

For the price, you just can´t go wrong with this camera! Amazing features all around... The only drawback is lack of integrated GPS, but SnapBridge works just as advertise, so it´s not a problem (syncs both pictures and information).

    More updates needed

Posted by Phantom on January 22, 2017

The D5600, like the D5500 before it is a good camera with a great sensor. The lightweight body is awesome, and the deep grip makes it very comfortable to use. It´s not much of an upgrade from it´s predecessor, however, and it´s a shame Nikon is still releasing cameras in 2017 that don´t have 4K video. To help compete with the numerous mirrorless camera options available today, Nikon should also really consider adding in-body image stabilization (IBIS) to it´s fleet of DSLR´s. This is a highly useful feature, and would work great with Nikon´s excellent line of 1.8 primes. As such, this is still a camera cable of producing incredible quality images due to its sensor. However it´s other features and minor upgrades are falling behind the competition out there.

Value for money and worth buying

    Posted by Hrits14 on January 7, 2017

Though the D5600 isn´t much different from the D5500, the snap bridge functionality and the time lapse shooting mode makes the D5600 a better mid-level DSLR than the already versatile D5500. I bought the dual lens kit (AF-P 18-55mm VR AF-P 70-300mm VR) and its really a great deal. The new AF-P lenses are remarkably silent, quick and provides impeccable picture quality. The only reason I´m given this product a 4 star instead of 5 is because of the shorter battery life! I hardly get 300 clicks out of it and if you are planning for long trip out in the open with this DSLR, I would definitely suggest for back up battery packs. Apart from this, its a great product to have and though its not a full frame DSLR it doesn´t behave any lesser than it´s elder siblings.
I definitely recommend this DSLR for all photo enthusiasts.
    Thank you
