    Amazing starter lens

Posted by Yargnoj on July 27, 2015

This is a great first dslr lens. It has wide enough of an angle to expose you to ultra wide rectilinear photography and it will zoom in to give you a taste of telephoto and action shots of sports. This will give you enough exposure to these types of shooting to help you decide if you need anything more on either end. Personally, the wider side inspired me to take pictures of HUGE landscapes and encourages that type. It is a lens that can do nearly anything. You want that family photo but you have 40 people in the shot? This will work wonderfully. Would like to take pictures of your dog catching a ball mid air? Just zoom in and use the high end.

Technically, this is a wonderful lens. It feels sturdy and is quick to focus (I´m sure professionals say it will be slow but why spend $2,000 when you can get the same picture for less). Full zoomed out, the image will show very faint signs of tunnel shots where the corners turn black, but this is only when I have filters on the lens.

The limitations of this lens come into play when you have low light settings. You are almost required to use a flash when it is evening and you are at a restaurant (low environmental light and dimly lit settings). If you bump up your ISO too much the quality of picture diminishes. Granted, in such a low light setting you could have a sub f/2 lens and still be required to use higher ISOs. Limited in the bokeh field at wider angles, still does a good job when at 85mm and up of this style.

Ultimately, if this lens comes with a kit OR if you are just looking to purchase something for someone fresh to digital slrs, this will be a great initiation to the field. However, this lens cannot do everything, so expect to want more. Photography rocks, but is not exactly a cheap hobby.

    Excellent upgrade from kit lenses

Posted by JohnRA on April 4, 2015

I shoot mostly with fixed focal lengths, but wanted a zoom for those times when I needed the versatility. I chose this lens to go with my D7100 and have found it exceeds all of my expectations. The image quality is very good for a zoom with this much range. In fact, it´s good for any zoom lens that costs less than $1000. The only problem I´ve encountered has been some distortion, but that´s easily fixed in post-processing. I highly recommend this lens for it´s quality and value.

    Wonderful Lens

I got this lens with my D5300 camera. 40 years ago I was into 35mm photography, but I reverted to point-and-shoot cameras over the years. Now that I am retired, I wanted to get back to good photography. This camera and this lens particularly, are marvelous. My initial photos immediately looked professional and I credit this lens. I did have to buy the hood separately which was an annoyance. I also spent a good amount of $ to buy a BandW XS-PRO NANO Clear filter to protect the lens with zero distortion, but that is a good investment in my opinion. Overall, I couldn´t be happier with the lens.

    Problem whit my D7000

Posted by Maquiko on September 19, 2014

Before the firmware update on my camera (D7000) this lens worked perfectly, after that the lens began to fail causing not focus and slow to focus making a strange noise and movement.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?

    Great Lense

Posted by mkennaley on March 29, 2014

I am the picture of a real amateur photographer, but when I purchased my D7100 I wanted to be able to use my AF lenses I had purchased with my AF 8008 camera. I have 35-135mm that I had been using with the D7100 for a short time and I thought I was getting good pictures. Then I decided to get the new AF-S DX 18-140 f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I find as I get older (I am 63 now) that I can not hold the camera as steady as I use too. The VR unit helps incredibly well. All I have ever used is Nikon, my grandfather got me started and all he ever used was Nikon. Wish he were here to try this beauty out.
