Z 7

I just love this camera! It does everything I would expect and so much more. Its compact, feels great in your hand, has a great rear screen, and just takes awesome pictures. I have mostly used if for landscape photos but I am excited to use the camera for so much more. As a long time Nikon user I feel Nikon has done a great job with this camera. Looking forward to buying more lens to go with my Z7.

There is a lot to love about this camera, from the amazing image quality to the handling characteristics and IBIS, but the AF (even with firmware 2.0) is laggy and not nearly as good as the D850. The eye AF is buggy and misses almost as much as it hits. I bought the z mount 35mm f/1.8 S lens for it and I´m putting it through its paces in the studio, but the eye AF is laggy and often inaccurate. If Nikon is committed to getting this camera right with firmware updates, I will be more than pleased, because if they can get it right and make it as snappy and responsive as the Sony A7RIII than this camera will be perfection. It´s a helluva lot of camera, simply put.

I have been using Nikon DSLRs since 2007 with the D200. I used it to begin my wedding photography business and enjoyed the quality of the results. I upgraded to D3 and D700 in 2008 and later retired from my second profession, using the equipment for my own use with a photo club. I later used a D800 and a D750 so I am quite educated in Nikon products. This year, I studied everything I could find on the subject of mirrorless camera bodies and purchased my Z7 which i found is a huge step up in quality equipment. The only other camera I looked at was the D850 but the future of mirrorless looked to be the way to go. I bought s lenses 50mm, 35mm, 24-70 f/4 and later the f/2.8 version. I await expectantly for the coming 70-200 but my extensive F mount lenses have been used a lot providing great images.

Was going back and forth between an 850 and z7...glad I waited for the mirrorless line. Awesome specs, great feel in hand. Like the smaller body. New S line lenses are awesome as well. I love this camera.. I not only can use my prime lenses with the FTZ adapter but purchased 3 of the S lenses. As photography is split between work and relaxing hobby for me, the Z 7 has not disappointed me in any area.

I had been working with a S*and#Y, and thinking about switching. However, I had a large book project to complete and thirty years experience with Nikon. I did the four day Arnold Sports Festival shoot on the Z-7 and did not regret the choice. The mirrorless system was excellent. The menu system was exactly where I expected everything to be located. The file quality was exceptional. The weight of the system was a joy. The adapter allow me to use my full run of lenses and the autofocus was much better than I had expected. Excellent launch...anxious for the upgrades and improvement...three cheers for NIKON.

This camera is feature rich. Size and weight are perfect. I enjoy learning new things and this camera is my gateway with all of the flexibility and power. My favorite lens is the 35mm, so precise.

I´ve been using the magnificent D850 since it was introduced. Its a wonderful piece of equipment, however, I´m no longer 19 and I´ve been waiting for Nikon to introduce a lightweight version. The Z7 is it! Combined with the 24-70/4, I can carry this combo around all day. A few months ago, I took an open door helicopter ride over San Francisco. The stabilization is remarkable in the Z7, and this was the acid test. The helicopter was being whipped around by the winds and of course vibration made this a challenge I don´t normally face. Amazing! The Z7 came through. I returned home thinking, I´d be lucky to have only a few sharp images. Quite the opposite. One complaint, I clean my equipment after each shoot, and its become a routine to use a blower on the sensor. No matter how careful I am, the Z7 does collect sensor dust.

As a very-experienced, Emler wildlife photographer, I have the best cameras Nikon makes as of this writing (D5, D850, D500). For action, the Z7 simply does not compare to any of these, on any level.

The OVF of DSLRs is superior for rapid-fire shooting to the EVF of mirrorless cameras.

However, my main profession is a casualty investigator. In this capacity, of photographing loss locations, vehicle damage, construction damage, etc. the Z7 Z 24-70 f/2.8 S lens is the only kit I bring for this endeavor. I will add to this the Z 14-24 f/2.8 S, the moment it comes out.

For pure landscape photography, I prefer the D850 Zeiss glass. There is no substitute.

For macro photography, however, as well as for portrait photography, it is in these two elements within Z7 truly shines. In this capacity, the EVF is superior to OVF. For example, with the Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5x - 5x, I cannot even see through the viewfinder with an OVF, in either the D500 or D850 ... yet the EVF of the Z7 illuminates tiny subjects so that I can see and photograph them with an off-shoe flash.

For portrait photography, the focus-peaking allows me to nail shots with precision focus, and the IBIS allows for hand-holding while achieving this objective. With Nikon´s finest portraiture glass (105/1.4, 58/1.4, and 28/1.4), the focus-peaking plus IBIS of the Z7 eclipse anything possible while hand-holding with DSLR´s.

I do not subscribe to the ´´DSLRs are dead´´ mantra. To me this is a statement made by zealots, part-timers, and those without the finest wildlife glass available. However, as someone who has the ability to afford Nikon´s best, there are certain circumstances (as described above) were mirrorless cameras offer advantages.

To those with the experience, there still remain many instances, however, were DSLRs continue to provide their own advantages. I absolutely love my Nikon Z7. However, and having Nikon´s other finest cameras available, I am able to fairly assess the Z7 for what it is, as well as what it is not.

Therefore, as with anything, selecting the right tool for the job is critical.

For macro, for midrange still photo, and for portraiture, the Z7 is my go-to option.
